Guest Vegasguy
Wandering through some Japanese Z sites, came upon an unusual cooling solution. The first picture shows the front view with a very significant shroud in front of the radiator. 1. http://www.hotstaff-power.co.jp/nak-z8.html Next, the overhead shot shows that the ducting takes a quick 90 degree turn towards the hood... 2. http://www.hotstaff-power.co.jp/nak-z1.html and exits through some very nice louvers at the front of the hood. 3. http://www.hotstaff-power.co.jp/nak-z12.html There's obviously an electric fan mounted behind the radiator in the inner duct, but the pictures really don't show it well. I'm curiously as to how this might impact (pro/con) airflow in the engine bay and underhood temps. Anyway, try the translate feature on Google and do a search for "S30Z"...some of the translations are quite humorous. VegasGuy 71 240 still on the rack L-82 waiting to go in. CruxGNZ
Pretty cool. It's similar to what Terry O. did. !M!
2126
Vegasguy, Briefly speaking..... PRO's: I suspect the setup you posted pretty much isolates the engine bay from the heat coming off the radiator, hence keeping the engine bay temp down. Maybe some down force is acquired!?CON's: It's going to cost you to do this modification. And even more if you are not capable of doing the required fabrication work. Just my $0.02 worth! Looks pretty slick if you ask me...and it does look to be a similar setup to Terry's SBF Z.
Guest iskone
Any one else think that was a really strange cage? Isk
Z-TARD
Wow, thats almost exactly what I've been envisioning for my own car. I really like how he did the louvers on the hood. I've spent a lot of time thinking of how to best vent the underhood air while maintaining the classic lines of the Z hood, this hood does that very well. The front strut bar/ cage thing is very cool too, and oddly enough also eerily similar to what I have been thinking of doing. Is it possible that I have a Japanese clone? Thanks for posting this VegasGuy, it definitely has started the gears turning in my head again. Mike
frank280zx
intresting this idea has been going round my mind sometime now.. however i have not figured out a sleek way of actually ducting out, other than a semetrical..... on my zxt that is.. alos i had an idea on venting it out the passanger side hood vent, as i have the space for ducting on that side .. that would not only look decent but function aswel
Owen
Looks like he's trying to keep hot air off the radiator from reaching the intakes??? Owen
JMortensen
He's trying to keep the air that comes in the front of the car from going under it, and by forcing it up out of the hood get a little downforce. Looks like an awfully sharp turn to me, at that point the turn might be SO sharp that it might just keep the air from flowing through smoothly. I'm leaning towards the NASCAR theory on this one, cover up that huge hole in the front and leave only a slit for air to get to the radiator. Preith has done exactly what I've been contemplating on the grill, he has pics at classiczcars.com. The amount of area for air to get into the radiator on a Z is seriously overkill. Couple a blocked off grill with some hood vents like Owen has and that should improve things a lot.
Nismo280zEd
yes i think that's a really odd cage, and where the heck does the valve cover breather line go to? makes an awfully long trek to some thing by the radiator, catch can setup or something? kinda odd? I'm actually planning on ducting my radiator, well not ducting but shrouding, lord knows I already have too much cooling on the freeway! I actually had to put a piece of cardboard infront of the radiator to get some heater action inside my car. But then again it was like 50 ambient temp i was doing about 80-85 and it was raining. No wonder i couldn't get any heat. Big Al radiators are fun.
