I watched an outstanding weldor lay down beautiful beads on 4130 CroMo tubing, lying in the dirt on a real windy day, using a POS scratch start no amptrol TIG welder that shut off ever 15 seconds because it overheated the circuit breaker in the shop. Conversly, I've seen myself creat piles of birdcrap using a $5,500 full boogie throw down bad *** mofo Lincoln 375 Precision TIG. Its the person holding the torch (or the gun) not the machine! randy 77zt Posted March 17, 2005 Share Posted March 17, 2005 i have a thermalarc 180 amp mig-if i dont use it much i have to weld on some scrap before i weld.i like welding thick stuff better than auto bodies.i converted an old boat trailer in a trailer for my z-that old iron welds easy. The Miller may have more options like pulse timing etc., but you need to evaluate if you need those things. Check out http://www.hobartwelders.com/mboard/ There IS a difference between Hobart and Miller. Miller is more for constant use, Hobart for hobbyists. I have an MM175 and the extra $ spent was definitely worth it in materials for the drive and transformers. The Lincoln model that they are comparing in that sheet is no longer made and has been replaced with the 215. There was a writeup about this on either the miller forum or the hobart forum, I can't remember which. That information is dated is all.
