oil feed line restrictor info ball bearing vs none

Recommended Posts

Just FYI, I was just looking around trying to decide if I am going to restrict the oil to my turbo and found this listed on one turbo parts site:

Oil Restrictor - for use with turbos .061" for non-ball bearing turbos and .036" for ball bearing turbos

I have seen it suggested to run .080" restriction hole. Just thought I would throw this in because I didn't know that ball bearing turbos require more oil restriction.

Too much oil flooding the ball bearings will make the bearings ride up on an oil wedge and start sliding. This is NOT how they were designed to work! It causes them to flat-sopt (seriously!) and this causes vibration, and possibly a crash of the impeller due to the bearings shelling out.

Ball bearings only require a light fluid (the lighter the better) to remove any built up heat from them---after that, it starts causing problems!

I agree that a strainer inline would be a good idea for any turbo to keep big stuff from catastrophic failure out of the turbo, but IMO a dedicated filter is overkill. If you install one, use something with a tattletale so you know when you have to service it!

So then based on this and not have a bb turbo what size line should I run for my oil feed and Im guessing that the restrictor should be .080?

These fittings are what I'm using on my twin BB turbos...that way you don't have to worry so much about line size.

Clifton, I was just wondering about restricting oil pressure to a T3/T04 turbo I'm running. About to switch motors and will probably replace my mangled stock turbo oil line on my L280et. I was wondering if you need to restrict oil pressure if running a non ballbearing turbo.
