Sequim85
i saw a 70's z car in a yard that had a non power steering rack and pinion.....i was wondering if it is possible to swap that into my 85 300zx(power steering, rack and pinion)? 260DET
Hmmm, don't often ask, but WTF would you want to? Not happy with the Z31 power steering? Just trying to understand
Sequim85
its not that i dont like the z31 power steering. mine is leaking everywhere, and i figured that it might be nice to remove some pumps and other crap out of my way for other stuff. not only that but this rack i saw was in a yard that would be pretty cheap. 260DET
Don't know for sure, but if the Z31 PS swap into a S30 was a goer then we'd hear all about it, which we don't. So, the reverse is unlikely?
Eric
what other racks are compatable with the z31? also, is it posible to tweek it so it's nonpower?
Clifton
If you have to replace yours anyway why would you replace it with another rack with PS:confused:? You could just drain the fluidand remove the belt. I have a Z31 and an S30. S30's aren't the easiest to steer when going slow and in parking lots. The Z31 is alot nicer in that respect. Eric
You could just drain the fluidand remove the belt.isn't that bad for the rack tho? the rack gets it's lube from the ps pump. if u remove that than the rack dosen't get fluid and it dries out. or can u just pack grees into it? rudypoochris
the ratio on a z31 would be setup for a powerassist so it would be much harder to steer than a s30 if they were both w/o power steer. I think, correct me if im wrong, plus the z31 is heavier...
Clifton
The stuff under the boots would still have grease. Z31's are heaver but a VG30 is lighter than an L. The front can't be to much more. I haven't checked locked to lock but the steering is about the same. Sounds like he is just looking for a cheap way to get out of a leaky rack. It needs to be replaced anyway or repaired. Me, I would change the bad seal or put the right rack in it.
Sequim85
i could replace the rack...but im just lookin around to see if there is any stuff so i could remove some junk under the hood, cause its packed under there and would be nice to have some room.
