Axles for q45 diff

OR, we can upgrade to the 280z stub axles, but remove the 4 bolt flange and nut, and instead of getting the adapter that hooks up to the 4 bolt flange, get this?? and bypass the 4 bolt flange and nut?

http://www.modern-motorsports.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=65&PHPSESSID=ba572ec82d83139b527b0be307b0cf1e

that seems cleaner, as there arent adapters to adapters, to axles, etc...seems like the adapter that adapts to the 4 bolt flange is just another adapter, which bolts to the stub axle, just seems too busy, too many bolts

With this piece from modern, we can go from the q45 CV, to this adapter and straight onto the spline of the 280 stub axle??

Correct me if im wrong

Sorry nazar for confusing you. The bottom link that mtcookson made is the one you want to check out for the halfshafts. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look at " R230 Available options" they cost $310. I would e-mail Ross at MMS and give him a list of what you got, and he'll set you up. As far as the " Stub Axle" is concerned , no you don't need to change to the 280z stub's to install your Q45 diff in. You can use the adapters you got from mas240z and bolt them to your 240z stubs. It's just that the stubs are 25 spline for the 240 and the 280 are 27 spline, just a little bit larger in diameter. Here's a link to see the differnces of the "stub Axles". Let me repeat, you DON'T have to change the stubs to install your diff. 280z stub axle install . Again sorry to confuse you. I know it's alot of info all at once.

now if i wanted to get the 280z stubs, they would still bolt on to the adapter right?

I am contemplating just going straight to MM's adapter that gets rid of the 4 bolt stub axle flange. THey have an adapter that goes from the q45 6 bolt cv straight into the 27 spline stub axle bypasing that STUPID 4 bolt oem flange...just too many flanges and adapters that way

right, finding a 280z stub axle could prove difficult

I dont know, i mihgt just stick to my stock stubs for now, and hook everything up just to get it done and working.. I can always upgrade to 280z stubs. Its just that i like that adapter that replaces that stupid 4 bolt flange..

That's a good idea. If your not pushing that much power, why change them. I did it only after I snapped mine and I was going to pay $500 for nissan brand stubs anyway, and I said why not upgrade while I'm at it. There's no reason not to run your adapters anyway, people were using them long before Ross came around and made them available. Just get the haflshalfs and get the car running first. :icon44:

well im running a 355ci lt1 on drag radials...i cant believe people are snaping those things, thats nuts

I cant imagine the 280, being that they are slightly thicker, being that much stronger though....maybe we just need those OVERPRICED billet ones...jeez

Wellthe fact that they are billet one piece 4140 chromoly, They are really a custom piece. To have some made would probably be more expensive. And believe me there are some guys here who have broken some stubs. So it has happened. I have a 383 pushing 400 flbs of torque with drag radials.Oh one more thing someone just posted that Ross is making a 40 spline stub. For the really crazy guys. I e-mailed Ross on these. We'll see.

Overpriced??? :nono: nazar, you might want to check and compare these prices to those of other projects out on the market today. Zcars, due to the fact that they aren't nearly as popular as we here would like them to be, don't have much of a specialty market anymore. The fact that an engineer the caliber of Ross Corrigan has taken the time to have these parts made available to us is something that we should all be thankful for. If you want to cheap out and take the chance on sheering off a stub axle, have at it. But I can assure you that anything you buy from MML has been coordinated and collaberated with some of the more senior members here, and tested to the highest levels. You get what you pay for in this business, and because Ross has to turn out such low numbers, you get what he can afford to sell them at.

Knowing that we have had stub axle failures, and that that you're planning on launching on drag radials, and assuming you're gonna push some serious torque and HP, I'd be concerned with long tern fatigue issues. Will you snap it next month? Probably not, but maybe. One thing is for sure, the lifespan of that stub axle is seriously reduced once you get past a few "months" of passes. The beauty of fatigue failure is it doesnt let you know when it's gonna snap. And with stub axles, inspecting them requires a full tear down of the assembly to get them out. That isn't something most of us want to do, due to the time involved and the tools required. A lot of guys don't even have a slide hammer, let alone know how to use one.

My point is to get you to think about what you're truly planning to do with the car, the time involved, and money spent on the project, vs. a $700 pair of stub axles. One axle failure and you can pretty much guarantee that you'll have much more than $700 in damage.

Seems like CHEAP insurance to me. :2thumbs:

*For the record, I have no compeling interest in MML or the design of said parts in this topic.

I found a nice set on eBay not too long ago. I would not recommend keeping the 240Z stub axles. Too many stories about broken ones. I don't plan to drag race my car so I am going with the 280Z stub axles. If I was going to drag race, i would go with the MMS chrome moly stub axles and the C/V adapters too.

Check out this site for info on the stub axle swap.

sorry guys i didnt mean overpriced for the part, just overall, overpriced as far as money goes, $700 for a small part of the rear end is alot of money

I mean all added up: 700 stub axles, $400 adapters, $300 halfshafts, $250 q45 diff, $250 mustache bar, etc....it adds up to $$$$$$$

We'll see what my budget allows, i would like at least 280z stubs for now

Nazar, if you do plan to run the 280z stub axles, you can send the companion flanges to Ross and get the non-billet version of his adapters:

http://www.modern-motorsports.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=32&products_id=57

They're $265, so it'll save you about $160 over the billet ones, but then again you have to send in the 280z companion flanges.

By the way, I shipped your CVs earlier today (I e-mailed you with pics of the parts).

OH make no bones about it... The Q45 option is probably as expensive as doing a Corvette or other style rear, and you get ZERO support in the way of ring gear selections... Makes one wonder why we even bother.

I may end up swapping out to a complete Corvette Rear like Scottie had, or something else later. But for now, I'll make this 3.54 gears Q45 setup work.

I've got 90% of the parts already, and the drive shaft adapter is cheap. The rest will have to be fabb'ed.

I swapped my 240 stubs for 280 stubs and it really isn't hard at all. Just need the right tools. If you need a set of 280 stub axles (used of course) call this guy and he can sell and maybe ship you a pair from his wrecking yard. He charged me 80 bucks for the set pulled!

Ask for Jerry, he's the owner:

I used stock 280z stub axles on my 240z. I had alot of track time with the q45 swap and I never had a problem with the stub axles.

Mike

thanks, that helps...I think im going to source out the 280 stub axles, and then send them to MM to have him make me that 1 piece cv adapter bypasing the 4bolt flange bolting...just have him weld it straight to the 6 bolt adapter, and then slide in.

BTW, got my arizonazcar mustache bar today, damn that thing looks dope just sitting there, everyone at the shop had a smile on their face when i pulled it out, a big piece of badass billet, just looks killer on its own, too bad you cant see it from behind the car

So got my q45, 4 cv's, mustache bar, driveshaft adapter, and will order the stub axles from that texas place, and the adapters and halfshafts from MM...wheew....lots of parts, this thing better pull wheelies, lol

Also dropped in my lt1 today:) looks killer in there. Ordered wheels and tires. Next week im going to tackle the tranny install and mount fab work, and coilovers.

Also got one of those 240z custom fuel sumps from a member on the board, the summit ones are TOO LONG for our tiny tank.
