My latest project :) not a Z :(

I started work on my latest project today... a 1962 Volvo P1800, number 2503 of the 6000 jenson bodied coupes built. I drove this car for a few years until the motor grenaded four years ago and it has been sitting in storage ever since. well, a few months ago I got this grand Idea to rebuild the car and present it to my father at christmas...he always talks about it, and how much he would like to have a nice classic car to cruise around in so I figured why not! I bought a 1991 940 two months ago as a donor car...hopefully the 62 will receive the engine, trans, rear axle, front brakes, wiring and AC without putting up too much of a fight. the idea behind using all those parts from the volvo donor is so that in the future if it ever breaks down it can be taken to the nearest volvo specialist for repair...that way there are no crazy surprises or odd ball unknown parts for the mechanic to figure out (I hope).

so the goal is to have the engine in and running in the end of july...after that we shall see whats left in the budget and proceed from there...

on with the pictures!

and the engine, 2.4 DOHC 4!

I'm thinking about converting the engine to dual side drafts to help keep the engine compartment clean and add to the "oh SH1T!" factor when you open the hood....other than that decision im right on track :)

more pictures to come as progress is made!

Nice! The P-1800 is one of my favorite cars of all time, those body lines are a work of art. I've never seen one with modern(ish) looking wheels on it before, they look amazing on there. That is probably one of the only cars that I would give up the Z for, well, that and the Cobra Daytona Coupe..... good luck with the swap, and keep us posted!

we had a yellow p1800 wagon when I was a kid, and I used to love that car...I lost my Sgt. Slaughter GI joe in the back seat, and he was never heard from again...My mom still says it was her favorite car, and I used to think about putting one together for her as a gift. I just never had the resources to do it properly.

Thanks for the compliments everyone...

Z-TARD- I agree that the lines on this car are fantastic, when I was driving it no one ever guessed that it was a volvo, it was always Porsche, Ferrari, Alfa etc. while they are cool looking cars IMO they will never be as versatile as the Z car... they are merely ok in the handling dept, and the engine bay is tiny leaving you with few engine choices. I'm wondering if I will change my opinion on them after I modernize her a bit...we shall see :)

veritech-z- Thats funny, I found a snake eyes GI Joe in the back of this one.

I also dig the wagons, there is one in SA running a supercharged rover V8...lucky for them the later ES wagons had much more room in the engine compartment and trans tunnel area.

Garrett76Zt- I actually looked into that swap for a few months but backed out for a number of reasons... one, it simply will not fit without some hacking up of the car, given that there are not many Jenson 1800s left I just couldnt justify hacking up the car (maybe if it was a later swedish built version) Im already worried that I will have to message the firewall just a bit in order to get the dizzy to fit. another reason is that this car will go to my dad, the last thing he needs...or will even use is more than 200HP :)

l28et- The wheels are unknown, I've never had them off the car and they have no markings on the outside. I seem to remember seeing a set on an early ford ranger at one point in time. chances are these wheels will stay on the car for the time being...I just dont have money in the budget for a set of wheels right now. in the future though she might get a nice set of 16's or 17's...CCWs perhaps? :)

man that car looks clean. How do those things do on rust? Unibody or body on frame?

the P1800s where all unibody cars, they have a few well known rust issues like the front frame rails, batter tray, rear qtrs and passenger side floor board (stupid heater control valve) much like the common problem spots on the S30 Z cars. This on has a small spot in the battery tray and another small spot on the floor...other than that its clean as can be.

Sparky - aren't you in San Antonio? If so, I'd love to see the car sometime.

I sure am, chances are I will taking the car to a few Z meetings when I get her done. right now im looking at getting her running and driving in the most basic state by the end of july, then she will be off for interior work until august. after that I will button up the electrics, AC, and rear disk conversion for a completion date around October, right around the same time the 240ZT should be finished up and driving. I might take them both to the November meeting, October meeting at the earliest.

I have to admit that I didn't like the boxy car's of the 70's 80's and 90's not until the current models come out did I start liking the body lines. But that 1800 of your's is in pretty good shape, and it's got some really nice lines. Keep us posted on your progress(plenty of pix) O.K.:)

Thanks again for the compliments everyone...

This friday morning starts the disassembly of my 1991 parts car, Im basically going to cut the car down into a running front clip and throw the leftovers on ebay or sell it to a scrap yard (whats the average going price per pound for metal these days anyway?) Looks like my special lady friend will be helping me along with the sawzall (she's really excited about the prospect of cutting a car into pieces :) ) I will be sure to take lots of pictures, there are a few P1800 guys that are interested in motor and trans mounts so lots of documentation is guaranteed...

yup thats the spot, have you gone to a meeting yet? to the best of my knowledge there are only 3 turbo 240Zs running around, one is mine, another is yours, and then there is the mystery car I keep hearing about but no ones ever witnessed...sigh...wish there was more participation between local hybridZ owners....or just Z owners in general.

I went to one in December. I guess its been a while. The 240 is sitting at home with a BHG (south carolina). I have the Z31 out here. I'll be going to next months meet with a friend in an 06 Z33. Its red, 18s, youll recognize it.

When I was at the meet in December I saw the 700hp white Z32 (That little asian guys), that chicks 500hp supercharged 350 (FlyinZ) and the black Veilside 350. Not bad for a parking lot meeting at a burger joint. ONE first gen was there. ONE. And it was in rough shape (but sounded good).

Just keep in touch and we'll meet up there. Gotta rep the S30s.
