New2TheZ2006
My newly acquired 280z is running rough, after getting to to run at all. It sat for God knows how long, but now it is running, I changed the oil and am trying to make it work better before I start my mods. I have to drive it daily while working on it. My 2.8 6cyl (1975 280Z) is missing, well the engine is misfiring that is. I take off #5 plug wire while engine running and sounds same as when wire in place. I was told the #5 injector is not working. I was told by a mechanic to pull the plug wire and straight wire 12volts from battery to the two terminals to clear the injector. 1-will this blow anything up 2-is this a bad thing to do 3-what other option do I have Help, what should I do? big-phil
I have done this before. I think you can put the 12+ to either of the prongs on the injector? You might try a search on this site to be sure. you can also start the car and use a long screw driver or somthing and touch it to the injector then to your ear, and you can hear the injector firing. Do that to a known working injector to get the sound the try #5 If its not working you will have to take it out and clean, maby replace it? I would for sure clean them all if you have to take that one out, once the fuel rail is out you might as well.
jeffp
You can zap the injector with the battery, but don't keep it connected to long, you will run the risk of opening the injector coil if you just leave it connected to the batery. So try that and if it works you will hear it click. My experience with this problem got me into some trouble with my car. If you get the injector to open, chances are that it is not going to flow to capacity of the injector, in other words, the injector will more then likely need to be cleaned. My recommendation is get a cost on a new part. I bought one from Kragen for 75.00 I think, and it just may cost close to that figure to have your injector cleaned. Another place to look is Ebay for a set.
New2TheZ2006
Thanks guys, I will try cleaning then zapping. Less likely to damage first. Then new one.

savageskaterkid
When I looked for them, everyone wanted about 75 dollars a piece. At Advanced Auto Parts it was 35 a piece.
veritech-z
while you're at it, why not get the upgraded mercedes injectors? I don't think they cost much more than the stock ones, but it's been awhile since I priced them. You can search for the exact application to ask for, I think it's a late 70's 400sel? but don't quote me on that...
