The new Z4/M coupe is ugly. The tail lights are terrible after the "facelift" and the previous gen M coupe was much sexier.

 

Either way, great engine, nice wheels, and awesome driving dynamics. Still, give me the new M Roadster and I'll be changing out the tail lights.

I like the M coupe. I think I could live with the styling quirkyness because I like the proportions and straight six so much. I like the Z29 concept more though.

I personally like it, and I think this is what the 350Z should look like... I test drove a Z4 before buying my ZMRoadster and was way more impressed with it than with the S2000 or Porsche Boxter I testdrove back to back with it... The Boxter and Z4 were both base models, which got me to thinkimg about revisiting the 2001-2002 ZMRoadsters, which I eventually bought!

 

I haven't seen a new Mcoup yet, but have read reviews from a few who have bought them over on bimmerforums, and none have commented negatvely!

Even though the old M Coupe had a boxy hatch area (most people expect a sloping hatch like other sports cars), that's actually what I kinda liked about it. At the least, it'd have a lot more cargo room from the boxy, almost wagon-like hatch area.

Since we're talking about my second passion (1st is my 240Z), the BMW M Coupe I may as well chime in here. As the owner of a Cosmos Black on Black 2000 //M Coupe, I am a bit biased. I freakin' love driving this car. Like most BMWs, it does everything well. It may not be the absolute fastest, nor the ultimate in handling, but it does everything at a B+ average whereas most other cars sacrifice something in order to score high on one aspect only to suffer on another. Such is the beauty of the ultimate driving machine.

 

Having driven several 3.0 Z4 roadsters on both the street and auto-x, while at the same time having also sat in a Z4 M Coupe and actually followed it a twisty road (it was during an event here in the SF Bay Area called http://www.dorkfest.com) Here are a couple of observations:

 

Handling: Z4 – The Z4 rear suspension is superior the Z3 in many ways. It’s lighter, and multi-link unlike the Z3 semi-trailing arm. I found it much more predictable.

 

Engine: Tie - The 2001-2002 Z3 came with the same S54 (although in 315hp guise as opposed to 330hp in the Z4). The actual performance between the two from what I’ve heard is nearly identical. The S52 powered versions, although packing just 250hp (they rate higher on the dyno than the M3) are quite quick as well. They also respond very well to aftermarket mods such as chips, filters and even superchargers so the power equation can be rectified rather easily between the two if needed.

 

Looks: Z3 – Due to the more organic and traditional lines, I believe the Z3 will have timeless appeal while the Z4 will look tired in a decade while the more organic shape of the Z3 will live on. I especially like how the rear of the Z3 has a squatted look to it, akin to Porsche 911 widebodies. This is missing on the Z4. I am also fond of the hatchback look of the Z3 M Coupe. There really isn’t anything else like it on the road.

 

Just for grins, here’s a gratuitous pic of my car. Its the best I have available to me at the moment.
