mario_82_ZXT
Nice!!! What's left (other then reassembly) to drive it? Mario
olie05
Sweet! Any vids of it running? thats a great rear 1/4 shot. Your car was an inspiration for me before I got my Z. Glad to see it rolled out of the shop after 2 yrs!
auxilary
well, the only thing left to do is to get the throttle assembly (pedal/cable/etc) fabricated (there's a leverage issue between wide open on the TB and the amount of cable the pedal would pull, mismatching). Once that's done, the engine comes out, need to fab a new battery box, paint it, and then assemble/fire it up and get it tuned ona dyno Also need to rebuilt the rear diff. I have the 3.7 clsd, and the clutches are worn (at least from the symptoms), so I need to get that fixed.
capt_furious
Whoa! It's off the jackstands!? COOL! Let me know if you need help with anything. And I wanna be there for the first fire!
auxilary
haha, no problem. Well, it made it from the shop to rob's house, remember? That's where it lives now

Gollum
I trust you... how long has this been now, or should I not even ask? I've love to be there to see it running too, though I understand if limited drooling space is reserved for those you know personally. I've been following this swap since before I became a member I believe. Long time in the making, lots of anticipation.
proxlamus©
Aux why do you say this?! too pricey and too much fab work?! alot of the 510 guys and Miata guys and airplane guys swap them in.. any reason why its too much work in a Z?!
auxilary
steering rack's in the wrong place, parts are very expensive works well for 510 guys because the steering rack, like in the FB rx7, is recirculating ball and behind the crossmember, not in front. Much easier to adapt. Of course, knowing what I know now, I would've made a few things different, but if cost is no object to you, by all means go ahead! proxlamus©
darn you Aux! get my hopes up then smash em! LoL.. superb work and shows a great amount of admiration for stickn through the project!! time to find another motor.. sigh
auxilary
Nah, go for it if you got the funds... just keep in mind that rotaries aren't tolerant to detonation, and rich mixture = safety. You can get a used jdm series 5 turbo 2 motor that makes 200hp stock for about 1300 bucks with wiring harness, turbo2 tranny, and stock turbo. replace secondary 550cc injectors with 720cc or 850cc units so you can up the boost a bit, with open exhaust and a piggy back safc or equivalent engine management you could probably tune it to 250hp. Replace stock turbo with something bigger (like a t04b/e which can be had cheap), exhaust manifold, and a waste gate, prices start adding up. Front mount intercooler, blow off valve, piping, etc... little things add up quick. My 13b-re motor was 1500, engine management - 1000 (microtech), clutch = 350, flywheel = 220, turbo = 700 (t04s), tial44mm waste gate =400, probably another 500+ on AN fittings and lines.... and that's just starting to count it. proxlamus©
sounds cheaper than a LSx swap to me so far
auxilary
i dunno, you can find a complete ls1 combo with a t56 for about 3000-4000, if not less.... and not a whole lot more is required. One can probably do an ls1 conversion in 7k. rotary's more than that, trust me
Gollum
You know, the 280Zx had a recirculating ball type steering setup (79'-81' power steering I believe). Might make the swap a bit easier for a S130 car.
SR240Z
Hey aux, i have a Turbo 2 motor and trans sitting in my shop that i really want to get rid of, but how do i know whether its a Series 5 motor? Thanks in advance. Ryan if this is indeed a series 5 motor maybe we can work something out
auxilary
series 4 motors were 86-88, series 5 are 89-91 easiest way to tell is s4 waterpump has 7 bolts, s5 one has 8.
SR240Z
well checking by the water pump it is a series 4 motor. I have the motor and trans (no harness or ecu), anybody want to make me an offer plus shipping? Or you can come and pick up if you want too. a6t8vw
What i find crazy is how 1.3 L rotarys run MASSIVE turbos. much larger than t04's but i guess at 8k+ rpm that small motor is flowing ALOT of air.
