badjuju
I'm getting a very robust ticking at startup, that seems to come and go, and speeds up with engine speed. Anyone have an idea as to what this is?
Gavin
Exhaust leak from the manifold gasket maybe?
Hartspank
Find yourself a long screwdriver, put your ear to the handle, use it like a drs. stethoscope and you can probe around to pinpoint the area of the noise,ie. lifters, injectors, rod knock (yikes!) It really works no BS.
badjuju
I'll do that, thanks guys
badjuju
Also, my turbo is lagging a bit more than usual, it's quite possible that it's an exhaust leak.
cpt jack
Also, my turbo is lagging a bit more than usual, it's quite possible that it's an exhaust leak. well if its an exhaust leak from after the down pipe then u should c a boost in accel... but most likly if u have a ticking noise its your lifters which isnt a big deal till like a year or 2 when u can mrushume the valve... well yea my 2 cents.... Alex_V
Sounds like a broken stud. Not very fun to replace while its in the car an the manifold on. You at least have to take the exaust manifold and maybe intake manifold off, its not very hard with the engine out of the car though. ~Alex
badjuju
a broken... stud. a broken head stud? I suppose that's better than needing a new head or a rebuild or something of the sorts, I still haven't done the screwdriver test though, So I'll get back on that once I get it finished
SU'dCrazy280
I used to have the same problem. Could be that a rocker arm or two are a bit off, take a feeler guage and I think the intake is .008, and the exhaust is .010, I'm not for sure on these numbers though, I'll have to look it up. Maybe its .009 and .011, I can't remember. Something like that. But if the feeler guage slides in and out of the space between the cam and the rocker with ease, then loosen the lock nut and adjust it. It takes some practice, but you might as well check them all. Oh, and make sure that the cam lobe is not facing directly down when checking each valve.
Alex_V
No I ment a broken exuast stud or bolt. If one is broken exuast can escape before it spins the turbo, creating more lag. Or you have a boost leak. ~Alex
