Wheel studs/replacements

Was wondering for those of you that have replaced/upgraded your wheel studs, what did you upgrade to over stock? I am looking at removing/upgrading my rear studs. I believe the stock ones are 12-1.25 by 32mm in length with a knurl diam. of 12.87.

Does arp or Morosa make them? I have had no luck finding them and the local speed shops just shrug their collective shoulders when asked. I have even been told "that's why I drive a Mustang"....well good for him and his POS....LOL.

On a positive note, I met a guy at the local speed shop who owns a back halved 468 BBC powered 280 ZX but he is running a solid axle and didn't know much about the ind. rear ends and wheel studs!

Mike,

Are you specifically looking for something stronger or longer than stock? If it longer that you need, the common swap is the Nissan Quest stud. I'm not sure of the specs--sorry, but I can look them up. I know you have a tough V8 and you drag race, but I still have to ask what it is that you want to accomplish here? Are your present (I assume stock) studs not cutting the mustard? JnJRacing's car is brutal and I'd find out what they're using if they've upgraded--their blown V8 Z is pushing some pretty fast times on stock suspension.

I did a quick search

For the rear you have to go with the 2.5" Nismo racing stud at $8 each or change threads and nuts. Quest won't help others as much as 280 is 36mm and 280ZX is 40mm.

alright, just so everyone is playing on the same playing field of measurement, i did the math...

stock 240/260 = 32mm / 1.2608"

stock 280z = 36mm / 1.4183"

stock 280zx = 40mm / 1.5759"

stock Quest = 47mm / 1.8518"

so theres what we have stock, then theres aftermarket...

nismo race studs = 63.5mm / 2.5" (where?) $128.00 + s&h (16 exactly)

ARP ARP-100-7708 = 63.5mm / 2.5" (summit) $47.80 + s&h (4 sets of 5)

ARP ARP-100-7713 = 82.55mm / 3.25" (summit) $63.80 + s&h (4 sets of 5)

Those ARP studs are 12mm x 1.5, a different thread then the original studs.

I used them because they fit fine and were cheaper. 12mm x 1.25 open lugnuts were tough to find. I had also just seen a few (Nissan/Nismo?) studs break at Motorsport Ranch, including one z32 that dropped a wheel.

12mm x 1.25 open nuts are available through Courtesy. I don't know what vehicle they are for though.

You can just cut the end off of a closed lug nut, that's one solution anyway. There are also 2nd gen RX7 studs, which are about an inch longer than stock and the knurl is correct. Here is a pic: longstudcompare.jpg

If you're using Nissan wheels they have that funky shank diameter that doesn't fit the lug nuts you buy at the auto parts store. Solution is to get some Toyota 4x4 lug nuts from a tire store. They are the correct 12 x 1.5 and have the right shoulder size to center a Nissan wheel.

Davy,

No I am not looking for longer just stronger. The reason is lately I have seen more cars shear the wheel off at the track and almost all say they were running stock wheel studs.

Kind of scared of having that happen to my Z let alone me in it...Big Chicken that I am...LOL!

I took a slightly different route.......when I replaced my studs, because I needed 3" long units to suit my situation, I went with some MOROSO studs in 1/2" thread......worked out just fine with no mods required other than to enlarge the flange holes to accept the new size knurling on the MOROSO studs.

Great info! Thanks, Jon.

Mike, I hope you have something useful from the thread. I hope you stay safe!!

  • 9 months later...

Tonight I was cleaning the car up at work and I notice that my rear lug nuts looked cock-eyed. I think I may have bent/twisted my rear studs. These are not stock studs but came with my ICHIBA 20mm spacers that I am using for the rear, so I have no idea how strong they are supposed to be? Anyway I found this post but the only thing I'm not 100% sure of is the knurle size of the studs. I am going to use some ARP studs for the rear. I see that they make 12mmx1.25 but I don't know if the knurle size is correct, if it's not I will just use 12mmx1.5(lots of sizes avaliable).

Any way this is what I found on Summit's site for the 12mmx1.25...

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=ARP%2D100%2D7716&N=700+400295+300117+4294900374+115&autoview=sku

Any help wold be great!

The knurl size on the stud you linked to is too large. You could redrill to fit those. The Camaro 12x1.5 is the right one. I want to say knurl is .509" or so, but it's been a while since I've looked at the specs. A quick search should bring up more posts. I know ScottieGNZ has posted the ARP stock number quite a few times.
