gvincent
I apologize for double posting this question, I posted it in this thread a couple of days ago: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=120696&page=2 I am going to use the Dupli-color system to paint my engine bay but here is my question. I sprayed Rustoleum rust colored primer on some sheet metal repairs I did in the engine bay and also sprayed some other areas in the bay as well. Should I sand this off and hit it with the Dupli-Color primer or do you think it is safe to just primer right over the Rustoleum primer? I can't remember if I saw it posted somewhere if using Rustoleum primer was a big NONO! RacerX?? Ledphoot What do all you paint/body experts think? Thanks, Greg
260Mopar
Being a painter I'd suggest testing coating a small spot. you'll probably be OK if the Rustoleum is good and dry. If no wrinkling occurs then you're in like Flynn. If the Dupli has a hot fast dry solvent it could create a problem. If there is a problem it would show up almost right away. gvincent
Thanks, 260Mopar, I was afraid I screwed up by wanting to get the bare metal covered right away and spraying it with rustoleum which is all I had laying around at the time. I had nightmares of paint chips flaking off in a couple of months exposing the bare metal again! I had this happen to me on my other Z car, I must of prepped the fender wrong or used the wrong type of primer But after sanding and applying Bondo to a fender a few years ago I sprayed primer on a fender and sanded some more and sprayed again. The ca sat for 6 months in the garage and I noticed one day that the primer had a couple of cracks and so I poked at it and it chipped of where I had sanded down to bare metal. Apparently I didn't use a metal etching primer but a standard sandable build primer. so now I know I need 2 types of primer when bare metal is exposed metal etching first then proceed with regular sandable build primer. mikeatrpi
Absolutely sand it off. Rustoleum is oil based. I used rustoleum aerosol primer on my cars, and then I sprayed a coat of epoxy primer over it. The epoxy wrinkled and lifted within minutes. I ended up sanding all of the aerosol off the car. Then I had to clean the surface really well. Rustoleum has its place, but not on anything you plan to topcoat- in my opinion!
Ledphoot
Always match your paint types. Regular rustoleum is oil based. Duplicolor system is a lacquer based system. You have to use good old fashioned lacquer primer under it. The spraybomb primer that says it is "dry sandable" is lacquer. Even if your lucky enought to get the paint on without lifting it wont last 6 months and you will have a terrible mess that has to be stripped bare! Rustoleum has to go or you have to do the whole engine bay with an oil based enamel topcoat.
260Mopar
Yeah. What they said. Orrrr, Dulicolor Premium General Purpose Paint Top of the line acrylic enamels offer the ultimate protection, gloss, and color retention. Superior high solids formula ensures maximum coverage and performance. As I said, test it to see. trying to sand off all the primer out of an engine compartment isn't a task that I'd want to tackle. If the Dupli Color is too hot for the primer consider using a different product. These top-of-the-line Dupli-Color® Acrylic Enamels deliver the ultimate protection, gloss and color retention. A superior, high-solids formula ensures maximum coverage and performance.
