Guest omeye187
Well it's been a long time of searching now and still nothing... I have a 1981 280ZX 2+2, and my father-in-law and I replaced all of the brake pads and could not find the problem, while driving I can hear a really loud clicking noise out the drivers side at the rear of the car, when I speed up it speeds up. When I turn it stops, when i apply the brakes it stops, i was wondering if anybody had an idea as to what it may be.... I figured if it didnt make noise while I was turning then it wasnt a CV joint but I've talked to a couple of mechanics as well and even their stumped... so someone please help. Pop N Wood
This is not something people are likely to diagnois over the web. Jack the back of the car up and turn the tires by hand. Look for evidence of rotating pieces hiting non-rotating pieces. Like the parking brake cable, brake likes, CV boot clamps. Everything else is just guess work. Making noise while turning is when a CV joint on a front wheel drive car often makes noise when bad. I had a similar problem on my s10 truck "after my brother-in-law changed front wheel bearings" when I got home on leave and checked it out the driver side front wheel had about 1/4" play in and out, I put on all new hubs, rotors and brgs and problem was solved. "rotors needed to changed anyway" Lou
Guest omeye187
Thank you... oddly enough the small things often skip ones mind.. once again thank you
mannyvig
Check the cv shafts make sure the spindle nut is tight and that the cv flange bolts are torqued to the diff properly also. Repack your bearings. Ive seen similar things and a lot of times this solves it.
JMortensen
I don't think his car has CV flange bolts. It's pretty hard to figure out what the problem is based on your description, but I'd be looking for interference with the brake cables, etc as Pop said, and also looking at the U-joints on the driveshaft and halfshafts. sweetleaf
Like was already mentioned, look for parts clashing. I had a new exhaust put in and had the same type of noise. It was the rear drive shaft u-joint hitting the exhaust.
RedNeckZ
My oldest daughter was driving my 280Z in Colorado a few years back. During a Snow/ice storm, she lost control and put the rearend into a curb. She did some damage to the gas tank and passenger side control arm. It started making the same type noise. It would only make the noise when moving. Turned out to be the bearing cage in the rear hub area on the control arm. We had to replace the bearings and races on that side. It had spread apart and the metal bearings were knocked out of its cage and was rubbing on the race. I hope you find the problem. Good Luck, Rich.
