TrumpetRhapsody
I hate to make another "should I buy" threads, but I can't help myself. Granted, this 240z is probably in better shape than the 280z I was looking at, but at least I have a complete idea of this one. The 280z stabbed me in the back after I got some better pictures taken. It's got some floor problems, but they're not too bad. Interior looks pretty good actually, I'm surprised at the dash. It's got 139k with all original equipment. Looks like I might need a new hood, and perhaps a door too. The back pan looks pretty mussed up too, dunno what to think about that. The rest of it looks fixable. He started working on the body, grinding and priming in places, so it does look a little rougher in the low lighting than it really is. What do yall think of this one? (I'll spare you the poll this time ) He's asking $800. He said if I did $1000 he'd throw in the original louvers and a set of chrome bullet side-mirrors. We'll see about that, not a big fan of louvers anyway
Titus_RacerX
I HATE the way dealers used to install the aftermarket A/C on these cars. I'm removing mine in the restoration and have 3 crude holes to fill in the firewall. Yours prospect looks like they went thru the fenders. This would allow water to enter the cabin as it was splashed off the tires. About this car. What is the frame/floorpan like? With the holes in the inner fenders, I'm guessing rotted. If you can see the ground, offer $700 and leave the guy with the louvers (or sell them on Classic). For $700 you would have a good buy. I paid $500 for mine: pretty tight '73 with some minor collision damage and some rust in floorboards ahead of seat mounts, real strong 2.4 (swapping for Turbo soon), 5-spd, Recaros and Turbo wheels. Good examples are still out there. You just have to find them. Do you have a local Z Car club? You might ask some members about sourcing a clean car. datsun40146
IMO, this car is a bit rusty. However b/c it it mostly already stripped down you know where the problem areas are. (Price sheet below, my estimates) The dog legs Will have to be replaced. My hood was banged in the EXACT same place, while that damage is fixable it would cost you more in body work. The roll has to have work done to it anyway if you are going to shave the bumpers (you should ) So that won't be anything you didn't have to fix already. The wheel archs can be patched there is no need to replace the whole thing. Now that rear deck worries me, if that much rust has come thorugh you can bet there is a quite a nit underneath that ready to come through. The floor pans look like they have some damage to them, it doesn't look too bad you may be able to just patch them. From the pictures it looks like it was hit on the passenger side door area next to the lock. That body work will be need to be redone or the metal replaced. Thats all I can see right now so you cost sheet is below. This assumes you can weld and have some ablity to work metal, if not the triple the cost I give you. Doglegs-75.00 USD New Hood -150 (for a good one) Wheel Arches - 20.00 or so depending on if you can get away with a patch Roll Pan- I would buy a parts car and cut the good pan off it it. The same applies for the wheel arch area. This could cut you cost and fab time. To be safe i'll quote 150 to fix this. The rear deck- Dunno on this one but the panel will run you a bit of change, this is where the parts car would be nice. I'll say 200 to remove and replace the whole thing. Floor pans- Patched -20.00 replaced 200.00 Body work- Dunno on this one w/o seeing the car close up. But a round a bout estimate I would 2,000 for JUST the body work no paint. Figure another 1500 to 2000 to get it under paint if you use a cheap paint. By my estimates you can expext to spend 5115.00 get the cars body in good shape. and that assumes you can weld and farm out the paint work. TrumpetRhapsody
I HATE the way dealers used to install the aftermarket A/C on these cars. I didn't even notice that to be honest. Interesting... Dunno what I'd do about that. What is the frame/floorpan like? With the holes in the inner fenders, I'm guessing rotted. Well, according to my Dad (he swung by to look at the car and snapped those pics on the way back from a business trip), the frame looks decent and the pans are better than the 280z I was looking at. I do take that with a grain of salt though, b/c the pans of the 280z didn't have the sound deadening. There could be alot of rust hiding under that tar on this 240z. I won't know till I see the car myself in daylight. For $700 you would have a good buy. That's kinda what I'm thinking. Depending on how it looks in daylight, offer $600-750, and asking about throwing in the side-mirrors on the top end of that. Do you have a local Z Car club? You might ask some members about sourcing a clean car. Not exactly. There is a ZCC in Branson, but there's a long story to that apparently. Dsommer is local and is trying to help me find one. He tipped me off to this one in the newspaper actually. I don't' have the resources or time to travel to far to get one (AZ, CA, maybe not even GA), so I'm gonna kinda have to make a compromise with the rust. If you think I can work on the body work in stages, I think this car could be a possibility. Live with the hood and roll pan for now, start working on the floor pans, door (replace?), clean up the lower half of the car he hasn't grinded/primed, etc. Then fix the harder stuff later. I dunno. By my estimates you can expext to spend 5115.00 get the cars body in good shape. and that assumes you can weld and farm out the paint work. Yeah I'm hoping to do alot/most of the body work myself , and paint will have to be homemade until I get out of college and can afford a real paint job. Those prices don't seem too bad, about what I was expecting if I can space it out and not get it all at once. I'm planning on ZG's anyway, so the wheel arches will go. Dayz
I personally wouldn't buy it, take advice of people here, there is an enormous amount of bodywork...just look carefully at the picture of the door. It is not the big rusted part that will kill you, it is all the little dings and rusted area where you don't know if you have to change metal or not. You are close to Texas, give yourself a favor, go there and pick one up, it will save you time money and...
MJLamberson
remember that 240z parts cars/ or even just parts are hard to come by then 280z ones
datsun40146
Any Idea on what you plan to do?
TrumpetRhapsody
According to my dad the original 280z I was looking at was trashed compared to this 240z, so I guess it's out. Another option has presented itself, and I'm going to follow up on it first, but if it doesn't pan out I'll see about picking this one up.
