bakerzxt
i have a 83 zx turbo and i hear a knock/tapping noise when i am sitting at a light and if i rev it up a little the knock/tap gets faster and louder and if i rev it up past 2000rpm it goes away but the knock/tap always comes back. sometimes i can hear it if i am cruising around at low rpms as well but it always silences when the rpms are over 2000-2500. i know that my oil is ok i have checked that numerous times and it isnt an engine knock. i think it could be either a valve tap or the timing chain is tapping against the timing chain cover. i am not sure. i have searched all of the above and found some info on the timing chain and that sometimes they stretches. so if anyone has some info on what you think it can be and what i should do about it. i know that if is the timing chain i need to get it fixed as soon as possible. thanks
bakerzxt
i also want to add that my car doesnt always idle the same now that i have been hearing the knock/tap. even if the motor is warm sometimes it is idling at like 1200-1500rpms. then other times it idles normal. idk what is causing this. thanks
woldson
Can you record the noise and post it. Inside and outside the car if you can. Sure hope its not xxx xxxxx. Dont even want to say it out loud. Is it a knock or a tanking or ticking.
83zed owner
i had a similar problem on a 83 n/a it turned out to be that the spark plug wires were pluged in at a different order.

BayAreaZT
Exhaust leak maybe?
OlderThanMe
Where is it coming from on the engine? Maybe just pull the valve cover and see if anything is loose...
SHO-Z
Old school shade tree check. Start you engine and let it idle pull one plug wire at a time. If the knock goes way on you have a bad rod on that cylinder. A cracked piston can also be check this way.

MJLamberson
it may be easier to pull injector connections then plugs... so you dont get zapped
