datz280
while disassembling my engine one of the pistons had a skewed wipe pattern. I was told if my rod is bent I could straighten it. Is this advisable on a street driven boosted engine? Arizona Z Car has rods for about $60. If I was to buy a new rod would I need to buy a set? Also if I have custom pistons on stock 280 rods will this be a problem? Thank you, Mike
1 fast z
Yes it can be straightened. It has to be done by SOMEONE who knows what they are doing, and needs to be checked on a rod checker.
Evan Purple240zt
Buy a good used rod, should not cause you too many headaches that way. Evan
1 fast z
Every rod in EVERY engine build needs to be checked for straight.
Evan Purple240zt
^valid point^ especially since one is bent. BUT, if you can get a good rod for a reasonable price its surely cheaper then having someone straighten a bent one. Evan
josh817
I have too many rods, you can buy mine if you'd like. 2 sets of 280 rods, 1 set of l24 but those are mine. <
Challenger
Yes it can be straightened. It has to be done by SOMEONE who knows what they are doing, and needs to be checked on a rod checker. So a hammer wont work... What are the tolerances on a rod? How do you measure it to make sure its true.
dr_hunt
Yes it can be straightened. It has to be done by SOMEONE who knows what they are doing, and needs to be checked on a rod checker. Perhaps, but common sense tell us that 1. He's not capable since he doesn't have the equipment or knowledge. 2. Rods are plentifull and inexpensive. 3. The risk outweighs the benefit in this case. So the simple answer is NO you can't and NO you shouldn't even attempt it. Either get a new rod or a used rod. IMO have them all weight matched and resized. But it's your decision. Evan Purple240zt
Wait, can't he just bend the other 5 so they match?
steveosupremeo
haha. the price is right at AZC but u could try a used set and see if a machine shop can get the best 6 out of the 12.
datz280
Thanks guys, I was weary of having my shop straighten the rod. I think I will go with a set of used and pick the best 6 of 12. My shop is going to check, size, balance, and peen them
jeffer949
do you need a set? i have like 12 laying around.. wait make that 18 lol
badjuju
Wait, can't he just bend the other 5 so they match? Could, but at that point you have to bend the block to match and he doesn't have a big enough hammer.
josh817
He COULD bend them all, and it would lower the comp from the piston not going up all the ways. More boost baby, yah! If it works like a charm, I think I'd kill myself. >_<
