woldson
Dude...... I'm not even sure what to say. What speedo do you have?
m4xwellmurd3r
yeah, I'm not sure what to tell you either except you have something REALLY restricting your power. there is no "governor" in the old Z's
Mr.INSANE
aerodynamics i think thats the device thats restricting you

Slammed68
Lies!! Stop telling this man there is no governor!! Step 1, remove engine. Step 2, replace with LS1.
zmaster
yes i do believe there is a govenor, because i give it full throttle, and it hit 85 really fast, and then it slows down then speeds up tyo 85, and repeats. I want to drive this car semi stock for now, and i have seen the stock 280z's hit 120, so how did they do it? how do you modify the govenor? I will do some more searching on the govenor. Globerunner513
perhaps your car isn't quite as stock as you think? my 280z hit 130 just fine with no governor of any sort. how do your RPM's respond when it slows down and then back up to 85? Is it possible that your rpms are still rising, while the speedo is stuck at 85?

They did not come from the factory with a governor. If there is one, some one put it in on their own, it's not original.
zmaster
when i am in the car and hit 85 i can feel the car pull to 85 mph, and then it will stop, then it slows down by about 2 mph, then i can feel the car pull back to 85 and it does this repeatedly. i really want to faster than 85 Where should i look if someone put a govenor on my car? where should i start? AK-Z
idk either. See if theres a vacuum leak somewhere. Even the 280zx didn't have a govener IIRC. they just had teh speedos that stopped at 85. Did this just started happening? Whats your setup?

jbk240z
Remove the boat anchor L6, and install an engine with real power, a V8! To the L6 fans, I am just kidding!
woldson
Do you have cruise control, That is goverend on both my zx's. It has to be on to work. Other wise no governor except hp. Even with the crusie on you can still exceed the speed the crusie will just shut off. Mabey your bro is trying to help you out.?
zmaster
no exhaust restriction, or bent exhaust pipes. my setup is completely stock except for a cold air intake with a K&N air filter. No it does not have cruise control, what would a vacuum leak do? no aftermarket ecu YET. I want to have some fun with my stock engine before i buy a LS2 motor. AK-Z
Check/clean the connection to the AFM and the ECU
Globerunner513
maybe try disconnecting the speedo cable from the back of the speedometer? Really I kind of doubt that would do anything...but its worth a shot. You can calculate speed based on rpms/gear ratio/tire size.
