ShaggyZ
Cool. Two things: First, am I seeing your exhaust pumping out the side of your driver side lower quarter panel? That's how I've been wanting to do a S30 but my current body is too nice and original to cut. I wonder how well it might help with fumes in the passenger cabin. Second, please DO NOT post any videos on Photobucket - they are the worst quality and the sound is usually very tinny, like it's coming through a coffee can and a sea shell. I only say this because I noticed you're posting with Photobucket. Wouldn't want a good video to be lamed because of the sound and video quality of Photobucket. karl
Well my car is a series 1 built Dec 1970 with a perfect body, zero rust. I don't think It hurts the cars value to cut a hole there that can be easily repaired in the future. I see that your putting a 2J in your car, you'll need fender flares to put enough rubber on the ground to control the car at all, trust me, I've got a 7M with sticky tires and they are constantly spinning, ha ha. I have no fume problems at all and I have two holes in my rear hatch clear through to the interior where my vents belong, I'm making my own out of stainless steel at the moment. You must also go under the car and seal any and all seams in overlaping metal that you can find. Good luck with the swap.
yhlz
karl, how was the wiring? what's the overall things to get to make this swap run as a stock engine. here's the list that i've come up with. let me know if i've overlooked something. 7mgte engine, transmission, clutch slave cylinder, wiring, ecu, shortened driveshaft, custom engine mounts, transmission mount, turbo piping, and exhaust piping. i am interested in putting this in my 280z. am i missing anything? thanks. karl
yhlz, Hi, you're going to need a complete custom driveshaft, but be sure to get the 7mgte/r154 transmission yoke, It's around $200.00 if you have to buy one. You're going to need a custom throttle set up, easy. My stock 4 core brass radiator couldn't keep the temps under control, it is very hot in south Louisiana. Custom fuel lines and pump. Clutch hard line will need to be shortened and flared again. Heat shielding for the battery. I hope your doing a brake upgrade and some suspension work? If I think of anything else I'll let you know. Let me know when you get it in and I'll give you the wiring info, It's not that complicated, I just have to give it a quick look over so I don't give you the wrong info. e_racer1999
What are your IATs? Are you experiencing any heatsinking with the radiator flush to the intercooler?

Karl for the driveshaft i will need the r154 driveshaft, have a shop cut the shaft part that goes into the r154 tranny and adapt it to my 280z driveshaft, correct? for the throttle setup, i'm confident that i can make that work. i'll just look at your pictures and steal your ideas. for the radiator, i'll see if the supra's radiator will fit. for the fuel lines, i'll just have to look up some longer one's? which one's did you use? also, for the fuel pump, should i go with the 255 walbro pump? what do you mean by, "Clutch hard line will need to be shortened and flared again." what do you mean by "flared again"? ...and the break upgrade and suspension is in the works. i wouldn't dare to use this engine without stopping on a dime. by the way, do you happen to have pictures of your wiring to go along with the instructions. it's probably too much to ask but it would be great if you did. karl
Jason, I'm runnung a 3300cfm black magic fan on my radiator with a 2.5" gap between the intercooler and rad. I have zero heating problems. The fan keeps running after the engine is turned off until the temp comes down to 170 degrees. I do not know what my IAT is because I don't have a intake temp sensor. yhlz, I don't think the r154 driveshaft is long enough, It's two short pieces . Yes go with the walbro 255 pump. My fuel lines are braided stainless #6 and 6 AN fittings with modified fuel rail, I also use a surge tank. The clutch hard line is the line that comes off the clutch master cylinder and goes down to the slave cylinder, It's to long for the r154 because the slave cylinder is on the left side of the transmission instead of the datsuns original right side. You have to get a flaring tool for the line in order for it to seal with the flexable slave cylinder line.
badjuju
amazing. quite a kick in the ass for me, i've had my 7mgte sitting in my 73 without motor mounts for a year now. Looks incredible man, you should be really proud.

karl
What do you think? I don't know if I like the 17" wheel on the datsun. It's a Simmons 3 peice.
Nelsonian
What do you think? I don't know if I like the 17" wheel on the datsun. It's a Simmons 3 peice. I like the Simmons look on there, but dig the Rota's more aggresive appearance more. I am a big fan of 17" wheels on an s30 for tire selections and aesthetics fwiw.... badjuju
If you don't mind me asking, how much did the entire swap cost? It seems like this would be a great 'poor-mans' alternative to any of the RB or JZ swaps. my 7mgte swap, so far, has cost~$3000. It should start today. It's not really a "poor-man's" alternative to anything, this motor has a **** ton of potential. If anything, I'd say the JZ is the "rich man's" alternative to most other swaps. People seem to think they poop gold when they own a 2j. Given, it's a beautiful motor, but it's not worth 2-3x more because they mentioned it in The Fast and The Furious. Well, actually it is, because people will pay it, but I'm sure as hell not going to! Sorry, I've been meaning to go on that rant for a while. MANY supra owners just flat piss me off. Since this is HybridZ, you need to distinguish your rant as being against SUPRA owners and not the 2JZ. A 2JZ only cost 2-3x more IF you live in the "Fast and Furious" world. badjuju
Karl, prior to your new manifold, what were you doing for your throttle linkage? I'm having some trouble with mine. Do you still have your old setup?
karl
Karl, prior to your new manifold, what were you doing for your throttle linkage? I'm having some trouble with mine. Do you still have your old setup? Hi badjuju, I used a lokar throttle cable and fabricated a bracket that attached to the firewall and another that attached to the head in front of the throttle body. I still have them, give me a call. 225-405-0047
