MaliceIntent
Hello everyone! I just wanted to share some info that have not been able to find anywhere. I've been building a 355 SBC for about 6 months now and Im to the point of "all I need is heads". like most people, I am on a budget, so ive been deeply considering the cheap summit irons. (part number: SUM-152123) But i was unable to find any flow numbers on these (so I can use CompCams cam selection software) so I contacted Summit, and they FINALLY responded with: Intake 210 cfm @ .500" lift w 28 in. water Exhaust 138 cfm @ .500" lift w 28 in. water Above is the only information available. Then I went here: http://www.purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/heads1.html and the closest match is the GM 462 heads, so im guessing that's the casting the summit heads are based on. but who knows, valves are diffrent sizes and chamber volume is different. They are also about the crappiest heads listed on the entire site. ...just wanted to share my findings incase anyone else wants to consider these. I might get them anyway vs. the Trickflow heads that I WANT. its gonna depend on if work picks up around here. -MIKE
dsommer
I'd consider holding out for the TFS heads, IMO. Aluminum, lighter good flowing heads. I've got a set on my build. I have iron heads on the Scarab and it is nose heavy, not just from engine placement but from the weight of the heads too. Any aluminum head is going to be your best bet. Have you checked out Patriot heads? Check these out on sale. https://www.patriot-performance.com/xcart/product.php?productid=220&cat=90&page=

Xander
for less than $100 more you can have these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts-Accessories_Car-Truck-Parts-Accessories__Patriot-190cc-SBC-Alum-Straight-Plug-Bare-Heads_W0QQitemZ300292761284QQddnZPartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQadiZ2865QQddiZ2811QQadnZCarQ20Q26Q20TruckQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item300292761284&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A2|39%3A1|240%3A1318 I ran a 8.5 sec in the 1/8 mile with these on a 305 SBC. grumpyvette
personally Id buy TRICKFLOW OR BRODIX http://www.jegs.com/i/Brodix/158/1021004/10002/-1 http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=TFS%2D30400002&N=700+400098+115&autoview=sku yes they ARE more expensive! but I can 100% gaurantee you will be upgrading those cheaper heads far faster than you realize currently and wasteing $700 now is NOT a good long term value vs paying a bit more now and not needing to upgrade, for alot longer time if ever CHECK OUT THE DIFFERANCES http://www.purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/heads1.html

I really wanna hold out for them (and I probably will) but money is TIGHT right now. this economy is killing me. the way things are going now Im gonna end up with junkyard heads. Thank you everyone else for your comments too

Filmjay
haha! those are the Trickflow heads I WANT. Thank you everyone else for your comments too No shame in junkyard heads to get it operable as long as you're saving for something better imo. Might be a good opportunity to practice porting/polishing. Have you looked at the aluminum Summit heads? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM-162111&N=700+4294925232+4294838998+4294908216+4294840140+4294889107+4294867081+4294867028+4294867079+115&autoview=sku They're ALMOST identical to the Trick Flow heads you're wanting, but they're about $200 cheaper than the TF's...but about that much more expensive than the iron Summits you picked. The aluminum Summit heads have a larger IR diameter(200cc vs TF's 195cc), more lift (.575 vs TF's .540), and dual (vs single) springs. Actually, your TF heads you chose and the Summit aluminum heads are almost exactly the same other than the few things I listed. The biggest difference is in the valve guide and seat materials used. But, if you're just going for those iron Summit heads just to have some cheap heads to get the motor running, I'd save a hundred and fifty bucks, go pick up a junkyard set and clean them up a bit....and put that money towards the heads you really want.
