jesse
i have an 82 slick top coupe that has brakes from an 81 can anyone explain??
JMortensen
Just a guess: Nissan doesn't stop production and throw out all the leftover old parts on September 1. Look at the 70/71/72 stuff. Lots of those parts bleed from year to year.
tec280zx
whats the build date on your 82? I'm guessing maybe late 81. My 81 was built in 09/80.
BleachZee
maybe a prior owner needed new rear brake calipers and bought used ones from a 1981 because it was cheaper than $250 each from Nissan. If they don't bolt on someone may have just swapped the entire rear trailing a-arm
jesse
it was made 5 /

tec280zx
Post a picture, sound like you do have 79-81 control arms.

BleachZee
wow, new calipers and stainless braided brake lines. I'm not sure how to visually tell differences in the control arms from 79-81 and 82-83.
jesse
ya did you notice how horribly the tire is weighted to make it balanced the weights that are in the picture are not the only ones there are also stick ones like a stack of them
JMortensen
You ought to take that tire back to the shop and have them spin it 180 degrees on the rim. That is in my opinion an unacceptable amount of weight. While you're at it you might have them redo the whole balance and do it dynamically with weights on the inside and outside of the rim. Right now looks like you have a static balance, which means no weights on the outside and also not a very good balance. As to the brakes, you apparently have 81 control arms and brakes. So what? Like I said before, they don't stop production and throw away all last year's parts.
aarang
Just wondering, is your car an automatic? It looks like from the pics that it has an R180 diff instead of an R200. The crossmember is an earlier 79-81 as it does not have the gussets on the ctl arm bosses. The ctl arms look to be the earlier style as well as there is the one piece hard brake line as apposed to 2 flex lines per ctl arm as on the 82-83. It looks to me that someone has swaped the entire rear suspension from an earlier ZX into this one. Not really a big deal, though. trippintl0
I really like that white color on the 280zx. Nice looking car!
jesse
yes to answer your question my car is an automatic the weight issue: there are weights on the outside and the inside but the rim is damaged badly (was hydroplaned) have a new rim and all but gonna wait to put the tires on because car does not run i think i blew a fusible link. Smokescreen
Looks identical to my 79 as far as caliper location, type and CA..Hope that helps. I agree with Jon, not much difference as far as quality or reliability so I wouldnt sweat it. Just remember when ordering parts, lol. Goodlookin white slicktop BTW
Niku-Sama
the rear brakes drag alot and make alot of noise on mine and its a 79. its werid they got new calipers unless even though it is a 5/82 they could be hold overs still
