sanders8800
I really want to do the LT1 280zx swap but i don't know how much it will cost. I'm starting to think selling my 280zx and buying a different Z is the better choice here. Let me know what Z will be the the cheapest and most direct V8 Z swap. I want it to be a LS1 z but what Z? Please let me know.
Old Man
One of the best sources of information is Johnscar.com. Once you are there, click on the link "broken kitty" This will take you to your site selection. Click on the Z car and then Ls1 conversion. Enjoy it is great reading!!! Magnum380Z
Im not an expert, but most of the LS1 swaps done here are on the S30. I have not seen very many 280zx LS1s. I would do a search and see what you find out
Old Man
You are correct. This engine swap is mainly concentrated within the early Z car. At present Johnscars offers nothing for the ZX cars as far as the LS1 conversion.
janaka
IIRC the late 260 and 280's have the wider tranny tunnels that don't need to be 'massaged' to fit the trannys. I know mine didn't get beat on to fit the T56.
sanders8800
So between the 260 and the 280 which would you guys prefer?
garvice
Correct me if I am wrong, but if you have the ability to do a LS1 swap on a 240/260z, then why can't you do one on your 280zx? No you won't find as many s130 LS1 swaps on this forum as you will s30 LS1 swaps, but just sit down and think about it for a second. S130 came with a L28, S30 also came with L series engines. I cannot see why the S130 would be any harder to do then the S30. You should be able to follow the JTR conversion pretty much spot on. The only thing I can think that might be different is steering shaft/rack and physical engine bay dimensions. If you feel confident doing the conversion on an S30, then give it a go on the S130. If not, look for a car that has already been converted. Infact just did a quick search (Less then 30seconds) and JTR do a 280zx conversion, parts etc. http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Datsun-ZX_Order.html#headers http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?p=954897
Bigdeezs
garvice...there is a pretty much a bolt in kit for the S30 to LSx motor. The S130, not so much. That would be the reason to use an S30. Those parts from JTR are for earlier V8 motor conversions. Sanders... the 240/260 chassis is a bit lighter (as long as you have an early 260) the 280 (and late 260) chassis is heavier but is supposed to be a bit stronger. I have the 280 chassis but would prefer the lighter 240/early 260 chassis for the weight savings. Also from what I've seen the 240/260s dont seem to have any trouble holding up to the power from the LSx motor so why not be lighter?
