is this at TDC?

Recommended Posts

You're not getting a response because you are asking a question that can be found by searching or RTFM. Sorry, not trying to be an a$$, just letting you know.

I can't tell by looking at the timing chain. Is the #1 piston at the top of its bore? Are both the #1 cylinder intake and exhaust valves closed? If the answer is yes to both of those then it is at TDC.

if you should do this again you might try marking with a sharpie and/or take some pics before you dissasemble you'd be surprised how helpful that is. Another thing might be to study how an engine works and learn the suck, squeeze, bang, blow cycle then you wouldn't have to ask silly questions like where is tdc.

shove a straw in the spark plug hole and hold it upright with your finger and align the mark to where it's supposed to be at TDC by manually turning the engine over, and when the straw reaches its high point and the marks are on spot, you're at TDC.

simple as that in most cases. just hold the straw because of the weird angle on the spark plug holes for L heads.

i understand how an engine works, this isn't my first time finding tdc , just my first time working on a nissan motor, i did search, and i even have a manual for the car. and everyone says something about some mark on the cam gear having to line up with a bright link on the chain, but i don't see any markings on the gear lining up with any bright links on the chain.

i just wanted to be sure i wasn't going to mess anytrhing up before i took the gear off the cam and pulled the head.

Turn the motor over a few times by hand and keep stopping at TDC on the crank pulley. When the front two valves are shut and the piston is up, you are at TDC. Eventually, you will see that the cam/chain marks will line up too.

There is also a V shaped notch on the back part of the cam gear, and an oblong grove in the cam retainer plate. Like stated before, when you are at the top of the power stroke (piston all the way up, both valves closed) that notch should line up with the grove. I never worry too much about the bright spot on the chain.
