Cutlass372
Hey, Local to me there is an 83 280zx turbo in a junkyard with a running motor. I have been talking with the guy and he said he got it running today and had it running for 1/2 an hour. He said he would work with me on the other things I would need for the swap into my 72 240z. Does this seem like a good deal? The yard is only 10-15 mins from my house, I don't think I could find a better deal then this locally. He also said he has a 76 280z, does the gas tank from that work with the swap I need? Thanks for any help, Elliot.
JSM
$400 for everything? Meaning everything it would take to turbo your car? That is a great deal in my opinion.
Cutlass372
No not everything, $400 for the motor removed from the car. Maybe he would let me do it myself for cheaper? I'm just not sure how this place works. I am assuming the other stuff is extra?
JSM
EVERYTHING (turbo, manifold, injectors, J-pipe, etc.) on the motor? Hopefully that includes the wiring the FI wiring harness, coil and ignitor, ECU. You will also want the Fuel pump. You will have the P90A hydrolic lifter head. FlatBlack
Yes, get the gas tank - it's baffled and the 240Z one is not. Get a compression test before you get it and try and get everything for $
JSM
I don't think the tank will fit in a 72.
Cutlass372
Yes, everything on the motor, complete from valve cover to pan. I am assuming that everything else I want will be a little more extra (harness, ecu, etc). Is that the head that I want or don't want lol. FlatBlack
If it's a P90A then it might have hydraulic lifters. Do some searching on it. Valve cover to oil pan would be a long block, no manifolds or turbo probably. Try to get it all. *edited* Sorry guys
Cutlass372
It is everything, I was just using that term to mean the whole motor, The motor and all of its accessories are included from my understanding.
FlatBlack
I don't think the tank will fit in a 72. I forgot about that - the hatch deck is lower on the early cars, you'll have to look into that as well.
sweetleaf
Please stop the misinformation. Not all P90A heads are hydraulic.
skib
Please stop the misinformation. Not all P90A heads are hydraulic. some of the early P90A heads are solid, the rest (and most common) are hydraulic. I don't think the tank will fit in a 72. ya ZX tank woulnt fit grab a 75-76 tank
Cutlass372
He also said he has a 76 280z, does the gas tank from that work with the swap I need? Should I get it though? $400 for the WHOLE motor? I just don't know about the other parts, but i wouldn't expect a lot for money. I will have to figure that out. I will have to figure that out. your going to want a baffled tank for the EFI, so yes. if its $400 for the motor and everything on it, the ECU and wiring, and the bits you need to do the swap than yes, its worth it. JSM
Please stop the misinformation. Not all P90A heads are hydraulic. If it is an 83 as he stated, it is a hydraulic. Late 82 they started switching over, however, some 82 P90A heads are solid even though they say P90A. I do believe this is only for 82 though. Cutlass372
Thanks for the info guys, it's really helping me out. I think that the ECU and the harness (anything not attached directly to the engine) will be separate from the $400, do you think thats to much? Mack
well, if you pull the harness and ECU out and feed it through the dash, it is attached to the engine. Id try to get him to throw everything in for $400. USUALLY, at U pull it type yards, they will sell you everything, valve cover to oil pan, including the harness and ECU for their "complete engine" price. at least the U pull it yards I go to they do. cygnusx1
See if you can throw $500-$600 at him for the whole car. It will be worth it in the end. Trust me. Hydraulic head or not ....76 tank would be handy too if it's not clogged with internal rust.
boardkid280z
YES, GET IT! That is a great deal as long as there are no obvious knocks, leaks, smoking or low compression on the motor. A steady idle, and smooth revving would be nice too, but those just might be old electronics problems. Make sure that YOU see and hear it running before handing over the cash. If he is going to help you find what else you need for the swap, that'll be great too. I would say, unless you have a place to keep the car and have a plan in mind for specific parts in the car, don't worry about offering to buy the whole car. Having another car around can be more trouble than it's worth sometimes (not always). Hydraulic head is ok - doesn't have to be adjusted . Tell him everything you will need (harness, ECU, fuel pump and whatever else) and see what he says about the price. Should I get it though? $400 for the WHOLE motor? I just don't know about the other parts, but i wouldn't expect a lot for money. I will have to figure that out.
