hoov100
why not weld the hatch shut, then move the glass up and make the lower portion open like a trunk? similar to fast back mustang.
Daeron
There's always the pantera-styled, vertical rear window and a horizontal trunklid. You could just get the trunk cut out of a roadster and do it that way, but you may as well chop your roof off and go Full Roadster. THAT is a project I have always wanted to do... get some fiberglass fenders and hood for a roadster, cut them up, expand them a bit as needed, and then cut your Z up to make it into a Fairlady Roadster. MetalThrashingMad
I once saw on ebay a Z with a rear window that looked exactly like a Pantera; the sides were high and there was a cavity in the back with a vertical window. I'll look on my hard drive and see if I saved the picture.

Daeron
There ya go, Thats the pantera style hatch. ..in all its craptastic glory. Can you believe they actually put these things on cars like the CRX? And then there is the opposite, the Nissan NX2000 with its hatchback option... When you look outside the box, there is ALOT of room to go crazy with a hatchback. In fact, thats reason number 2349579239729 on my "List of why the Z-car pwns!!!11!!!" GOTAZ
Along the lines of kiwi303's idea (post #13): The early Triumphs, TR2, 3, 3A, had a removable rectangular rear body panel (below the level of the trunk). No hinges. It came completely off. When removed it revealed an enclosed 'pocket' just large enough to slide the spare into.
Xylemer
If you decided to weld it, you have to do a write up on it. I would like to see some pics of one welding up. Not really for me, but an interesting ides none the less.
