In the US if you're operating by AMA regulations, and flying with a fully laden (wet) weight of under 55lbs, you're covered by your AMA membership. This however requires you to get your jet license which includes the requirement of flying pylon and other 150 (i think) + mph capable airplanes while under the supervision of jet instructors. Prop planes are fare game though.

Check out the nice save at my local AMA airfield last year. I happened to be filming this cool Mustang that was somewhat poorly built. Joe, the pilot is not the owner or builder. He is just one of our best pilots, and gets to maiden some of the other guys planes, like this Mustang with bad gear!
