Ok, I have had it with the freakin locking mech's z's come with , they suck they don't work , break constantly.. I MUST know if there is another way that anyone can think off you can auto lock and open your door .. The internals of these suck. I put my door togethor .. well it doesnt shut all the way because of the weather stripping ( another wonderfull thanks for pissing me off datsun/nissan part ) Anyways I move the top pin of the lock ( the rod you pull up and down on to lock unlock your car ) I noticed on 4 door's i have non of these make a popping or clicking sound to lock or unlock .. What am i doing wrong here could all 4 ( the 2 doors on my car and the 2 i got from a junked z cause i had to replace door lock internals ) all broke?

fl327 has SOLEX barrel key locks , he got them from a rice rocket shop, no drilling bolted them on in two hours, they lock well and are secure.

I'm not going to comment here on MSA - talk to me off line.

Anyway, I'd NEVER buy OE parts from MSA. You can always beat their prices (not to mention service) by going to one of the MANY wholesale price Nissan dealers for parts. 1-800 number, good in-stock selection, and friendly service. Courtesy Nissan, Brown and Brown, others. Pic up a Road and Track and look in the back, or one of the ones that advertises in Sport Z Mag.

Have you tried removing the latch mechanism from the door, cleaning it with solvent and lubricating it? That helped mine alot.

I looked FOREVER years ago for those solex coke-machine locks for the doors. Glad Len found them.

I was turned onto the barrell key lock type (solex) by ZONCR, he said a guy in they're club used ones for a Nissan Hardbody truck and it was a bolt on. I havn't bought them yet but plan to. And yes my latches stick too, I turn the key about half a turn and they strain and then it comes open, I'm affraid of busting off that small piece of metal that goes from the lock to the latch. Guess I'll have to take the doors apart and grease them good ( I hate working on doors..).

ford locks work PERFECT- i have been installing them in Z's for over 10 years..

if you wanna pic email me private for how it looks installed.

FYI this uses a generic ford lock like all 70-80 fords

now i install power locks inside the doors as well

What are barrel locks? I'm using APC universal locks that use a key similar to those Kryptonite u-shaped bike locks.

They work fine and I've installed power door plungers as well. I lost the lock for the hatch though...damn!

EEEPS! Heh Well I don't feel like messing with them.. i totally removed everything out of the door and redid em.. new parts etc still nothing they are all moving it's just.. i dunno =/ .. Another problem i have been having is my window goes down fine but is tough to go up .. i was wondering if on the right side the metal track that houses the window's "plastic shimmy bar" ( not the rollers ) should be lubbed with axel grease etc i am applying to much force on getting the window back up i am afraid i will break somthing ..

Syndicate, I broke the front sash which is the bolt-on rail with bolts that runs vertically/diagonally at the front of the door. I've found that instead of struggling for days to try and find the right alignment of all the rails, simply leaving some bolts loose to move with the window is not a problem.

  • 2 weeks later...

do a search for SOLEX locks and you should come across them. they are expensive, but they work great, and theres no way short of breaking the window to get in my car, they are about 125.00 for three, but they are a bolt in or close to it, maybe a little grinding and adjustment but it shouldnt take you more than an hour to do the first one, and fifteen minutes after the learning curve.

Just curious, on electric locks do you have some sort of back up plan if you say left the headlights on ( or the battery is flat for whatever reason) and have no power? I was considering on any vehicle that I put them on to maybe add some external port or something that I can jump to, to energize the locks enough to get in. Is this just being paranoid? :D

Barrel locks are yeah like krytonite/vending machine keys, they're way harder to pick because the tumblers can't all be held in the proper position with one or two tools. The solex type locks are available at most places that handle rice-ware these days. SCCA good tip on the Ford locks, thanks!
