Lazyeye
Hi everyone. This weekend we're planning on adjusting the valves on my 280zx (was chattering pretty bad). I've read this: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/1803105 as well as the FSM entry on the subject, and I just got back from getting the feeler gauges and remote start switch. So I *think* I'm ready to perform my first valve adjustment... Can y'all provide me with any last minute advice or hints? Thanks!
batou
Don't use the remote start switch, just turn the engine by the cam gear bolt and a wrench, make sure its in neutral though.
m4xwellmurd3r
actually, I just jump the starter with a screw driver. it's MUCH easier than turning it with the cam gear bolt (and i dunno if that would be a good idea to do to begin with)
PurePontiacKid
I just turn my motor over by the balancer bolt... much more precise, to me anyways...
MAG58
I just turn my motor over by the balancer bolt... much more precise, to me anyways... +1 I've got a monster sway bar and I can still get to it, so no silly room excuses! I wouldn't put it on the cam gear, I feel that using the smaller bolt to torque (over torque?) the cam bolt by trying to turn the cam at half the speed the crank will turn is a poor decision. m4xwellmurd3r
Also, If it's your first time, try doing the adjustments while it's cold the first few times, so you don't have to worry abotu the engine cooling down. You can take your time to make sure everything is just right. Intake should be 0.007 in and exhaust 0.010 in when its cold.
MAG58
Try and use as thin of a 14mm wrench as possible as well, there has been more than one time that using a big ol' fat 14mm lead to some interesting valve lashes.
X64v
(over torque?) Factory torque spec on the camshaft sprocket bolt is 86-116 ft.lbs. Turning the motor by it is fine. Just fyi.
Lazyeye
Whats the end difference between doing a hot valve adjustment or a cold one?
PhilbertZ
My work is blocking that website (car porn??), but you need a 14mm and 17mm wrench and the thinner the better. Last time I disconnected my coil plug and buymped the starter with the ignition a few times to get the lobes aligned....you can also put car in 5th gear and push the car forward if you have room, but that's a PITA....I used a borrowed wrench on the crank gear before once but forgot the size (27mm?). Good luck - take photos and post with notes for other n00bs
TimZ
Factory torque spec on the camshaft sprocket bolt is 86-116 ft.lbs. Turning the motor by it is fine. Just fyi. +1 Just remember to pull the spark plugs first- you won't go anywhere near that amount of torque to turn the cam
batou
Forgot to mention, probably listed on that site, but it is much easier to turn the engine if you pull the plugs first.
Lazyeye
We ended up doing the adjustment cold, it made much more sense given how slow we went doing it. Anyways, the engine sounds pretty good right now, but I'm thinking that I need a new clutch, and that some of the chatter I thought was coming from the valves... was coming from the clutch.
