Valve Adjustment checklist

Hi everyone.

This weekend we're planning on adjusting the valves on my 280zx (was chattering pretty bad).

I've read this: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/1803105 as well as the FSM entry on the subject, and I just got back from getting the feeler gauges and remote start switch.

So I *think* I'm ready to perform my first valve adjustment...

Can y'all provide me with any last minute advice or hints?

Thanks!

I just turn my motor over by the balancer bolt... much more precise, to me anyways...

+1 I've got a monster sway bar and I can still get to it, so no silly room excuses! I wouldn't put it on the cam gear, I feel that using the smaller bolt to torque (over torque?) the cam bolt by trying to turn the cam at half the speed the crank will turn is a poor decision.

My work is blocking that website (car porn??), but you need a 14mm and 17mm wrench and the thinner the better.

Last time I disconnected my coil plug and buymped the starter with the ignition a few times to get the lobes aligned....you can also put car in 5th gear and push the car forward if you have room, but that's a PITA....I used a borrowed wrench on the crank gear before once but forgot the size (27mm?).

Good luck - take photos and post with notes for other n00bs :)

We ended up doing the adjustment cold, it made much more sense given how slow we went doing it.

Anyways, the engine sounds pretty good right now, but I'm thinking that I need a new clutch, and that some of the chatter I thought was coming from the valves... was coming from the clutch.
