True School 240Z Posted February 7, 2010 Share Posted February 7, 2010 I've been searching for an answer to this dilemma. I'm trying to install a removable steering wheel, but I have to remove the previous owners grant steering wheel. I got everything but the last piece seemingly stuck on the splines. Do I need a steering wheel puller? Should I try hammering it loose like a neanderthal? I broke one of the 3 bolts surrounding the locking nut, that shouldn't be the problem right? deja Posted February 7, 2010 Share Posted February 7, 2010 Make a puller. Take a piece of steel or even aluminum 1/8" thick. Drill 3 holes that match up with the 3 holes on the grant adapter. Drill a hole that will be threaded in the center for a 3/8" bolt. Attach this to the grant adapter using its threaded holes and start tigntening the center bolt, the adapter will pop offf very quickly. You'll spend more time amking it than using it, LOL. True School 240Z Posted February 8, 2010 Author Share Posted February 8, 2010 (edited) Thanks for the help Mark and Deja. I finally got the hub off with a autozone puller and a little improvisation. I got my new wheel on with a Momo adapter and NRG quick relese and wheel. Here's some pics. If the steering post is sitting flush with the locking nut, is that enough contact with the spline, or should I tighten it further? It feels fine though. jhm Posted February 9, 2010 Share Posted February 9, 2010 The new wheel looks good. The recommended torque for the steering shaft nut is 36-51 ft-lb. For future reference, one can usually remove the steering hub adapter just by leaving the steering wheel bolted to the adapter, removing the central steering shaft nut, and wiggling the steering wheel back and forth until it comes off the steering shaft.
