jay1161970
I have an 82 N/A. Love the exhaust note of my car. The sound is very european. I am not sure the brand of the muffler. Problem I have is at 2K the sound resonates into the car really bad. And it seems almost everywhere I go around town is around 2K. Is this a problem with the 280zx or is there a muffler that doesnt resonate so bad. Or should I invest in some sound deadening materials to quiet things in the cabin. Leon
Not trying to sound harsh here, but the problem is your driving. You are lugging the car, as this is not your old Chevy 350. Downshift and you're good to go. I'd keep the revs above 2500rpm. If you still get resonance you can put a resonator a bit downstream of the exhaust manifold. Sound reduction will depend on which resonator you get.

I do most of my easy driving at 1800 - 2200 rpm myself. Motor just likes it there and that's where the speed limits and gearing seem to match up. Here is some good info from classiczcar, different problem, but pertinent to your situation. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?p=325461#post325461 Post #7. jay1161970
Thanks for the replies. I think I will look into the pre muffler resonators and when I get into redoing the interior I will get some sound deadening materials in the cargo area to dampen the droning. At high way speeds the motor turns 2750 to 3k and that drone goes away and just the sweet sound of exaust. Its just the round town driving that needs help. Thanks again for the links. Two80z4me
I have a zx motor/trans in my Z and I get the same loud resonating, but thats because I just have one cherry bomb in the whole exhaust. as for keeping it above 2500, ive never heard of that before, I understand the L series are peppy and enjoy being above 2k but 2.5k seems overkill Edited May 1, 2010 by Two80z4me

YellowFever
I had some terrible resonance at 2000 rpm when I installed an MSA exhaust in my 280. The addition of a generic glasspack muffler in the transmission tunnel virtually eliminated the resonance.
jay1161970
I am going to try doing that. The generic cherry bomb would be a cheap fix.

bens1088
I had straight pipes to a flowmaster 40 series (the loudest). It resonated like CRAZY so I added a cheap resonator and its much better esp at 2-3k
