S30rb25
today i bought a series 2 rb25det swap the motor was sent out to a machine shop and got freshened up new valve guides all new bearings and stuff. Now that i jumped in with both feet,I hope it motivates me to finishing the body work on it lol. Im having a local shop put it all together for me and all said and done they said to buget 10k. and can anyone tell me if this is fair, and if its worth it in the end. I plan on spending the summer getting all the parts and piecing the swap together. and that should give enough time to get the z put back together. if anyone can chime in and give me some incite as what the hardest parts of this swap is i would be most grateful. i will post some pics of the the car later tonight and some of the motor as soon as the shop gets it back. S30rb25
sorry that all the pics are from my i phone but i think they show that i got most of the rust out and am on track to getting it back to its former glory. and for the section where the body meets the frame i have cut all that away and have a new piece ready to go in and my dad made a piece to weld into the frame to strengthen and fix that as well

jakeoster
Well, the "hard" route would be to figure out the mounts and fab them yourself along with the wiring harness. The easy route is going through McKinney Motorsports or a similar shop and having them work out the tough stuff for you. Other then that its pretty much straight forward. Little stuff comes up here and there that will get on your nerves but if you have any automotive experience then it shouldn't be too much to handle. S30rb25
yeah i figured the little things were going to be the biggest pain in the a**. but do you think 10 grand is a fair price to have a shop do the swap? Or if anyone in portland or vancouver has done this swap before and knows of ways of saving some time, money, and hassle, or knows of a good place where they can do it for less. RB26powered74zcar
Just curious... what exactly does this 10 grand price tag include?
S30rb25
They said roughly 10 grand. Includes motor, tranny wiring, install, exhaust, radiator, fmic, r200 rear end. Pretty much a complete install.
pat1
They said roughly 10 grand. Includes motor, tranny wiring, install, exhaust, radiator, fmic, r200 rear end. Pretty much a complete install. for the above it seems high. I work on cars for a living and I do this stuff everyday. I wish you were closer I would give you a much better price. Did the shop give you a break down on parts and labor? Get it in writing before you do anything.
S30rb25
they gave me a rough estimate on a few things and on some of the things they dont have prices on them yet. they were saying about 3k for the mounts radiator drive line rear end fmic and wiring. the series 2 long block the one with the machine work done to it 1400, then for the second motor set ( to get the tranny and ecu and harness and other missing sensors and such ) 1500-1700. so for the motor another 3k. but i'll be able to sell the other long block they say pretty easily for like 750. and on the sheet they gave me the estimated 20hrs of labor and that would be like 1500. and for the rest they say misc stuff, then custom downpipe and kakimoto exhaust. I'm not sure about a dif intake mani but thats roughly what we talked about when i was there last. and i did put down 1500 for the motor, I really fell in love of the idea of having pretty much a new motor. Midnight-280Z
Actually 10K sounds about right (IMHO)...I'm also assuming that they will get the motor to run how it should and not cut any corners as well. When they're done, everything should run correctly with NO problems. There's a well known shop here (ZCar Garage) 10K is about the cost of a RB25 Swap. S30rb25
finally have a few picture updates of some progress made, havent had time to do much lately so things are moving a little slower than i would like. but here it goes. finaly replaced the rusted out battery tray, did some more body work, not shown but stripped the interior, got the motor set in started tearing it down, pulled the old motor tranny driveshaft and exhaused. the fresh motor is back from the machine shop and is being put back together, now i gotta finish the body work and clean up the engine bay, and a few other things that i know i am forgetting
ZT-R
have fun, but remember to take a break. i am so burnt out i just threw up, literally. ahahha been working on it every day after work and on the weekends since november 19th 2010 and dont use earls fittings they are nothing but a pain in ass. 10grand is about right if its done right... 5thgenluder
So did you decide to do the work yourself. Looks good so far.
S30rb25
Its about time i update this post, got a oil pan from pat1, new fuel line kit, r200 rear end and mustach bar. As for the car itself finshed the body work installed new "custom" 1/8" steel frame rails. Put the car in primer and painted the engine bay and the underside of the hood black. I also have decided to do the rest of the swap at home with my dad instead of going through a shop to do it. rayaapp2
Tripping... IN STOCK FORMATION: Installed, running, dyno tuned at 263hp I spent ~$4000(but I am also the culprit that bought the last north american dealership rear sump pan for $134 so)... doing the work myself add a bunch of labor say $3000 (in just labor which seems reasonable). Add on a Greddy intake, Greddy timing belt, FMIC with custom piping and nice T clamps, A radiator that can cool extra power(that 200sx option works fine for stock, but think nice aluminum for anything more), aftermarket EFI for dial in tuning, and anything else over stock that you may want included. I spent another ~$5800 on those such items. My total into the car since I bought it back in 2002 is $17K up until a month ago, but that includes 2 previous engine swaps(not rb), all the oil changes, tires and other wearables I ever put into the car since that time. Yes the wife is ok with that as long as she gets to drive a nice car and I take care of that too. Id say I have around $10000 as a rough estimate in my engine swap minus labor(cause I dont charge myself). Ive recently added a few other parts that I havent added into my build book like a 3" bellmouth downpipe, cheap header, a replacement turbocharger, braided turbo lines, valve job, and cometic head gasket So pick your mods wisely cause they all cost $$$ that will add to your install costs. Your build is looking good so far btw!
