260z build advice

Recommended Posts

Hello right now I am to the point on my 260z where I really want to start planning on how I am going to build it. I "should" be done with the rust by the end of the upcoming summer and want to start keeping an eye out for parts, but to know what parts to look for I need to figure out how to build it. Trouble is me and my dad (neglected technical skills to long, good bonding and learning experience with my dad since he is really good with cars)have only worked with american muscle before and don't really know what would pull the best performance out of the z.

What I want minimum is about 06 mustang gt performance specs (I happen to drive one and don't want the z to lag behind it) and would enjoy having it compare with the newer iterations of the pony cars. Problem is I would prefer not to do an engine swap since i like the idea of the l26 staying in it. Its kinda unique since all the z's in my area are 350 cars. I also have a l28e laying around that i wouldn't mind cannibalizing. So any suggestions on how to pull the most out of the l26 would be love, or at least some enhancements that i can start reading on. I'd also like to keep to carburetors if possible. I figure weight is the biggest performance booster and plan on going with fiberglass fenders, bumpers and hood. I also have torn the entirety of the interior out and plan on only keeping the dash cover stock, everything else will be light weight custom made stuff. My problem mainly is the lack of knowledge on how to get more out of the motor.

Also is it true that souped up l26 sound like old school ferrari like some people I know have been saying?

In my opinion, turboing the L28 that you have is going to be the route to take.

Best to REALLY site down for a few hours and get personal with surching the site over turbo builds.

The motors will make the power and if done right will be reliable for street and track use.

Just to name a few things you can look toward to getting towards a turbo build.

ECU ( megasquirt)

Custom wiring harness (megasquirt)

F54 block (factory turbo block)

P90 head (factory turbo head)

Better turbo aside from the factory t3 if you want to make more the 300 reliable HP.

There are tons of turbo builds posted on the site, good idea to relate to them.

Really boils down to what your going to do with the car and what kind is power you want.

To give you and idea 300whp on a 260 will destroy a gt mustang or gt-500...no afence.

"I figure weight is the biggest performance booster and plan on going with fiberglass fenders, bumpers and hood."

You figured wrong, take the L28, turbo it to 300HP, and leave your expensive fiberglass parts at their vendor. The performance 'increase' you will see compared to the crash integrity, and simple creature comforts you dispense with will make for a miserable car to drive compared to the Mustang GT.

My 73 240Z ran well enough with 350HP at the rear wheels, with a full interior and a tuck-n-roll headliner to boot.

You can turbo the L26 as well, but you got the L28 why not use it nobody will know the difference.

Yeah, If' you've got the L28e, then why not use that? You don't have to Turbo it. in fact you could just swap over your carbs to the L28e, and run it like that. The .2 liters will make a decent difference. Only anyone checking your block numbers could tell the difference, and even then how many people have the #'s memorized. Not that it matters since you're not staying concours anyway. So yes, Turbo would make it faster, but the L28, Carbed and well built (maybe even bored and stroked to 3.1) would be plenty of power, especially in something as light as a 260Z. So how about some pictures? We'd love to see your project.
