ArchetypeDatsun
I been searching for a while now and can't seem to find anyone that's installed a P79 on a 83 L28ET, unless of course I missed it? So my goal is just to run this head temporarily until I can get my P90 rebuild. I have a loud ticking coming from my P90a head for sometime so I haven't driven my car much. I'm low on cash and unemployed which really sucks but I need to be on the look for jobs and this is holding me up. I know so far the compression will go up and so I would have to run low boost but the problem is I don't have a good boost controller. Would it be safe to run it on stock boost, my set up now is 83 L28ET with AiResearch T3/TO4E, turbo 87 Z31 ECU, MAF, stock exhaust, stock injectors & non intercooled. Any help as always will be greatly appreciated! Edited February 22, 2011 by 280zx@
aarang
Compression ratio won't change as the P79 and P90 have the same chamber. The only thing that would be of concern if one or more of the exhaust liners came out from the heat. If you kept the boost reasonable and didn't flog it too much, I would run it temporarily. If you didnt want to change the head, you could remove the hydraulic pivots from the P90a and see if you can clean them or Overhaul them. There is a post on here somewhere that addresses that. That is the route I would take as there would be less work and money spent on gaskets and such for a head swap. BluDestiny
Many people have run the P79 in a turbo set up with the liners. Check the turbo forums here. If you are on stock boost you will be fine
rossman
Aarang - you're probably right that he has a noisy hydraulic lifter but note that just because he has a P90A head does not necessarily mean it is hydraulic. P90A's came with either hydraulic lifters or solid lifters. I have a solid lifter P90A head.
ArchetypeDatsun
Hey thanks for the responses guys! If I can I will even make a video of the car when I start it so you guys can hear the loud ticking. SHO-Z
Take you lifters out and soak them in carb cleaner or run a can of engine flush. Old school is to add 2 qts of ATF and let the engine ilde for about 30 minutes to flush an engine. I have seen this work on V8 lifters in the past. It sure will not hurt and it could save changing a head out.
BluDestiny
you can also run diesel oil in your engine to clean it
ArchetypeDatsun
Yeah I heard of that but don't know how safe if would be on a turbocharged engine, I know ATF works kinda like a detergent even heard using diesel. My dad used to use diesel to clean his engine and it did good for his engine on his old truck. Edited February 22, 2011 by 280zx@
ArchetypeDatsun
So I took my spare n/a L28 that I have for sale looking at the head before taking it off it would seam to be more work needed just to clean it up and have a compression check for leaks than my P90 would. I now decided to just take my P90 to a machine shop less of a hassle for me, only thing holding back is the freezing weather.
aarang
One more thing you could consider is to just convert the pivots to solid with Timeserts. I think 12 of them cost about $30. You could take the pivots and cam, etc. from the N/A engine. Watch BigPhil's video. It's pretty damn easy to do, and doable with the engine in the car.
