Speaking of gauges, I got some autometer gauges last summer (oil,temp,volt) but I put off buying my other gauges till now (boost,fuel,oil temp) I just got back from the store to learn that the price has gone way up! That's life I guess, but it's the reason that really ticks me off. You see last summer I had them ordered from a warehouse in Canada. Well I guess the government watch-dogs realized that they were distributing a product that only had english labels! of course in Canada this is a sin! So now these gauges have to come directly from the states. What does this mean to a Canadian? Well, what it always means... BEND OVER and pay on the US dollar! I wish they never would have started that whole bi-lingual country crap, it only screws over our economy!

  3. I am amazed at how many 6+ footers we have here, I guess it's because the Z is a appealing car to the tall! and no, I don't feel inferior.. cuz I am over 6 feet too but I still have to move the seat up a notch or two to be able to push the clutch all the way in.
  4. Mine was almost as good of a price, 83zxt engine for $300. That is Canadian dollars so it's more like $180 to you yanks!
  5. Thanks for the info on the VG30 site. Actually the one I saw before was a different one, but man that site has got some great info and pics of everything! I'll definatly get my buddy over here to check it out (he's still in the dark ages and dosn't have a computer) Thanks alot guys!
  6. Ok, I showed my friend your replies and I think I talked him into the VG30 but after seeing SSS510's car I think I changed MY mind!! Damn, that's a smokin car!! I would loved to have seen the look on the guy's face in the mustang! B.T.W. can anyone tell me where to find the kit for the VG30 swap? I know I've seen it on the net before but I can't seem to find that now either.

  8. Ok, here's the story. A friend of mine has a 510 and he wants to put a six cylinder Nissan engine in there. Ok, so it's been done you can even buy a kit to put a VG30 in there. The problem is that he has got his heart set on using a L24 engine. I've been trying to talk him out of it telling him that he'd have to do alot of cutting up of the car to make it fit. He dosn't think so, in fact, he wants to relocate the radiator and push the engine FORWARD instead of back! I tried to tell him the would be a BAD idea but he won't listen. I tried to get him to go with the VG30, it has more power, lighter, and is a whole heck of alot SMALLER! He hasn't bought a engine yet and I'm sure around here you can pick up a rusty old 300zx that runs good for a few hundred bucks! I know, it's his car and he can do what he wants, but do you guys agree that this is the wrong approach?
  9. I don't have any experience with them, but I think I remember reading somwhere in this forum that they are not practical for a street driver. I think it had something to do with a long delay to get oil pressure? Good for a race car maybe, but with constantly starting and shutting off of a street car, maybe not a good idea.

  11. At the moment I have the autometer oil and temp mechanical gauges, I haven't bought the fuel gauge "yet" I just knew that the ohm readings were quite close to stock. I guess I'll have to think about using some resistors if it is that much of a problem.
  12. you can use the autometer gauge (for fords) on a datsun sending unit. the ohm readings are very close.
  13. I had the same problem and the local parts stores couldn't seem to help me, but one of the guys at the parts store suggested a place down the street that specializes in hydraulic hoses. Well I went down there and showed the guy what I needed and he took me in the back and it was quite literally a Mecca of lines, hoses and yes fittings! He gave me exactly what I needed and I said "Great, how much do I owe you?" Well it turned out to be a whopping $1.50! So check and see if there are any hydraulic hose shops around town, they might just have exactly what you need?
  14. Yeah it will bolt together no problem, but the problem will be KEEPING it bolted on! You see, because of the extra air/fuel that the turbocharger will give you, the compression ratio needs to be lower (stock turbo engine is about 7:1) The problem is that a 83zx n/a engine has flaptop pistons and will give you a CR normal to a n/a engine. It can be done, but at 12 psi you'd better figure a way on controlling that detonation. (intercooler, very good fuel, water injection, ect.)

  17. Yeah I believe that 74 was the first year for electronic ignition, what I find strange is that my 76 280z (fuel injected) has a spot on the console to mount the choke lever.
  18. I got fenders from Victoria and my body-man cursed them! They look good on the car now (after he had to modify them a bit) They seemed to be "too short" for the length of the hood. I guess they are ok if you got a good (and patient) body-man.
  19. Oh yeah, I forgot about the mechanical pump interfering with the engine mounts.. I guess I can get a little "upidy" when people start knockin the old simple ways (carbs, points, mechanical pumps.. ect.)
  20. The primaries have a accelerator pump to give a shot (squirt) of gas into the the carb to richen the mixture momentarily when the throttle is opened. The reason for this is because when the throttle is opened air rushes in very quickly (faster than the flow of fuel can begin) Without this "shot" of fuel the car would bog out on acceleration. 4 barrel carbs that have secondary butterfly valves serve essentially the same pupose, they delay the flow of air. You see, when the secondaries open there is a vacuum build up under the butterfly valve and when the vacuum is high enough then they will be forced to open. By that time the fuel will have began to flow... Giving you a smooth transition. The butterfly valves may look like a restriction but they are there for a purpose. Other 4barrel carbs may not have butterfly valves but then they would have vacuum controlled secondary instead Or a accelerator pump for the secondaries. (double pumper) Hope this clears things up (clear as mud)
  21. I wouldn't use the stock pump (it'll blow the float right off of the needle and seat!) There is nothing wrong with using a mechanical pump on a carbureted engine, unless of course your engine and carb require way more fuel supply than a stock mechanical pump can handle? When I was younger I found that people had negative thoughts about having electronic gismo's in their car now it seems that the attitude is that is it ain't electric, it's no good! NOT SO! Again if you are talking about a moderate cfm carb then do yourself a favor and buy are brand new mechanical fuel pump for maybe $20? bolt it in, with no wiring or relays to worry about and never have to give it a second thought. MY 2cents..

  23. Well I am glad to see that I'm not the only one that is stuck in the past! Sadly it seems that FWD is 90% of the car market these days. The only true advantages that I see in FWD is that it is a compact design and therefore LIGHTER than a similar RWD car also there would be less friction in the drivetrain because of the added size and weight of the MOVING parts. This would also contribute to better mileage. When it comes to driving on snow and ice I have plenty of experience, and while FWD is good for traction while accelerating I don't trust them when it comes to emergency situations. A front drive dosn't lose traction easily, but when it does.. it is very hard to recover. The disadvantages that have been mentioned, torque-steer, understeer and tight engine compartments. There is also matter of weight transfer under heavy acceleration (to the REAR wheels)
  24. I was just curious, what kind of opinions do you guys have about front wheel drive? How many of you think that "Fwd" and "performance" are two words that should not be used in the same sentence? Ha ha ha..
