  1. Congrats...I bet it is great to truly see on paper the true # you have gained from all the work you have done.

I really want to go with the ecu upgrade...infact I just bought a 1988 300zx Turbo parts car less engine that has all wiring both standard and auto turbo ecu. I have some honey do's to get done before I can try to do it....

    Like your turbo upgrade ....

You are right with that turbo all you need are larger injectors...possibly the 1989 and later maf upgrade and if you know how to tweek the ecu (which I don't have a clue) to accomidate said maf... Let the good times roll.

I take that back you could add a hair more psi if you had an adjustable fuel regulator (set at say 44psi)...but do that when you take the next step on mods...

  2. You are right I guess I am all fault for really not spelling it out what I wanted....I wanted opinions on using the 1988 zx Turbo rim/rotor/5lug suspension and rear...thinking:

1.Using the 88 turbo LSD rear would be stronger two wheel traction (I am not sure but think the 71-73 rear was not a LSD or as durable) 300zxT would include 5 lug rear disc brakes along with 16" rims (beats the 240z drum brakes....no pun intended). Also at first would like to use same halfshafts except I believe they are too long.

    2. Using the front 5 lug/disc brakes will match up the rear 5lug so I can use the seven 16 inch rims with good tires ( when installing.. I don't run into clearance problem) along with improved stopping power etc...Which is what I was asking in my post (I guess I didn't elaborate enough..sorry). Beats the stock 14" rims

    3. suspentionwise...I will probably go with the adjustable coilovers offered thru John at motorsports (I believe is his name..great guy ...remember years ago when he helped us out by developing all these upgrades). I just wanted to know how easy of a switch it would be ....thinking it would be neat to use the 300zxT adjustable ride shocks (you can adjust from the inside of the cab).using the 88 300ZXT suspention.

With regards to gastanks...I just wanted to use what I have saving money.300zxt is what I have although I do have a 280z fi tank it may be easier to install...I don't know that is why I was asking...fuel pump wanted to know if the 300zxt FP could support 280 Lt-1 hp...If not I could install my walbro off of my ZXT.

I remember Jeromino did as what I would like to do only different .(makes sense?)...use the stuff he had access to off the LS-1 car. I will be using a 300zxt car..

Scottie did swap a corvette rear (different rear I was interested in the 300zxT)...I remember right..when he did it...at the time he mentioned he wouldn't do it again.

Modern motorsports has really covered a bunch of the conversion aspects over the years. I plan on using them especally because John really knows his stuff and has been active on this site ever since I can remember. Bottom line what I am concerned about along ....is cost.

Using what I have available if what I have can improve performance. That is what I was inquiring.

When I was building my 280zxT (see sig below) the info and parts I received from ScottieGNZ along with many others were invaluble.. One of the satisfactions of beating Mustangs, Corvettes, etc. was looking at what they had dumped in their cars and having them look at what I did at about a sixth of the cost! Thanks to the input from a guy that used to frequent the turbo forums (ScottyMiz). I was able to make allot of hp AND save allot of money. I would like to do the same on this future project.

    Thanks for your input.

  3. Saw it on two guys garage...don't know the cost (which can be scary). It is a turnkey package install on a camaro (mounted on the rear where muffler was mounted). Adds 5psi (if you use the Methanal injection up to 7 psi). Tough part would be where to locate on a zcar since we have our gastank where turbo would be.

Just a really neat package for anyone doing a running a V-8 upping stock 245hp to over 400!

  4. Thank you 240Z2NV.... you input is helpful....really just wanted to hear any input from those that have tried using 300zxT suspension (what they thought of it...would they go that route again...as compaired to say a toyoda 4x4 etc.). I know allot of people have used the parts even more have used the rear. Wanted to know how the 3.7 z rear worked as compaired to the stock firebird 3.54 rear (too low?)

From the looks of both cars it should be a easy switch (looks can be decieving especally install width of suspention, a-arm mount). I just threw in the gastank idea. I would like to try a 280z FI gastank off my 280 parts car before going to a LS-1 or even a fuel cell.

Most of all wanted to thank you for as you said "the courtesy of a response"

  5. I have a 72 240z and a 96 LT-1/T-56 along with the rear end from the 96 firebird formula donor car it came out of (3.54 LSD rear disc).

Just paid $300 for a 1988 300zxTurbo automatic car less engine. Thinking that I could possibly change over the independent LSD rear (thinking as compaired to straight rear the 300zxt independent would be more manuverable) and also the two front suspentions. In that way I could switch to a five lug along with the benefit of using the four 16" rims/tires. For that matter I could also possibly use the tank and fuel pump since stock 240 tank is not for a FI.

Am I on the right track? Have any of you done this conversion on a 240 using 300zx components? will the suspention fit or would it be to wide and not worth the trouble?

  6. I believe I understand how it works after going on to Painless website I saw the harness...

Looks like you have three plugs

two plugs (male) you plug directly into the lights themselves after removing old plugs.

the one plug (female)you plug into the primary old headlight plug which will use that signal to operate the relays that: turn on and off; high and low the headlights using the power sorce from the battey.

Also you have your red wire running from your battery going thru the fuse along with the ground.

I was trying to use the old relays (and trying to figure which color wires to operate the relays; turn on low and high beam along with on and off) in my 280zxt and just install a larger guage wire from battery using two relays ala Pete's diagram.

A person can just use the primary headlight plug to operate the relays...or just order the Painless $77 or summit $48 inc. shipping for H-4 harness.

If you bought the separately the; two relays, fuse holder/fuse and wires along with plugs you would probably pay $32 so for $16 more summit sounds pretty fair. Although Painless could be better made.

Thanks for the input Cody :)

  7. I may be going about this the wrong way but looking in my 280zxt service manual located the Lighting relay on pass side in front of shock tower. #7 in list of relays...unbolted the box and underneath saw;

    1. smaller guage black wire

    2. larger guage black wire

    3. brown wire

    4. red/blue striped wire (next to brown)

    5. red/green striped wire (by itself)

Using my circut tester I noted that the; brown, red/blue & red/green all held positive charges at one time or another. Also those three all go into headlights at the lights themselves.

Turning on lights noted brown wire only one charged on high beams.

On low beams both red/blue and red/green held charge.

My question is could I just run a larger guage wire directly from battery to this relay. If so which color wire would I replace with the larger guage battery wire?

If I need to use an additional relay which wires would I use to turn on and off the relay to turn on and off my high and low beams?

Or do I need to go directly to my turn signal/cruise control/light lever and try to find correct wire to turn on and off the relay for the lights? Would I bypass original lighting relay (#7) all together which would mean I would need to also find way to control high and low beams.

Or am I going about this all wrong? I looked on all listed sites even Paprasska's diagram but his is for a 240z (different colors)

  8. Well as I posted in drive train section...I have a chance to buy a rearend from a 1988 300zx turbo automatic(should be LSD clutch type 370 gearing). Turns out I may buy the whole car Less the engine and tranny (auto).

After reading the great stuff Afsin posted on converting to 300zxt computer I wanna go for it...I even plan on getting the whole harness since my plugs are worn anyway along with the guy including a standard trans. computer besides the auto computer (if that makes a difference in conversion)...and of course the MAS air sensor, dist. trigger wheel, for the conversion....Also reading that the 300zxT turbo is water cooled and I gather its same size as our 280ZXT T-3 turbos that one I could upgrade with bigger compressor wheel in the future...Also seats etc.

Can you guys think of anything else I should remove before scraping the car?

  9. Hi Cody!

agree on Manual Trans for a sports car.. auto I would think would be a bummer...anyway if I remember from my muscle car days those turbo 400's were HEAVY ...strong but heavy..

I just rebuild my first transmission four months ago. It was a Fiat 124 spider 5 speed...my problem was it grinded getting in third then popped out on second third and fourth...ended up replacing the bad syncro for third (also the rest while I was at it) then 1 and 2 sleeve, 3 and 4 sleeve, 5 and reverse sleeve. Along with finding the best shifter forks and gears out of my other two parts car trannies...works great, four thousand miles to date.

If I can rebuild one I'm sure you can..just get a good scematic...good to have a spare tranny to look at but generally everything goes on one way and makes sense after awhile....T-5 parts would be cheaper and you will know it was done right.

  10. Hi Guys

Haven't posted in sometime...got sidetracked with a 77 Fiat 124 spider work in progress. But can never git too far away from Hybrid...

Question This guy at the machine shop that's boring my fiat block has a 1988 300 zx turbo he tore up. It ia an auto...has the rear end. I seem to remember the 88 is the LSD and both the MT and the Auto are 3.70. Am I right? Also is this the good upgrade I seem to remember you don't want to go with some years due to being the clutch type or Viscous coupling (don't remember which is better help me on this).

If it is the good rear I'm thinking of buying it for my future 240Z 96 LT1 T-56 install....the stock rear for the Lt-1 was a 3.42 so that may gear the car down a bit but since I'll have the 6th gear that would compensate for that....? I believe my 83 turbo has 3.54 stock rear so maybe even to low of gearing for my turbo....What do you think Guys? And if its a good rear for my needs what is a fair price?

  11. I agree with Jersey.

Except that you need to remember what all males have to deal with; that is SIZE...Ya gotta be able to deal with the remarkes just in case you happen to pull up beside a guy with a very LARGE I/C and you exhibit your smallish one..... If you use it ;be strong remember its not the size that counts its how you use it (aka et times)... :D sorry guys had to go with this one....

  12. If you havent replaced your fuel filter might be a good idea.

You can also get a neat little gatgit at autozone you can plug into one of your injector leads to check if its getting fire.

You can also remove your fuel line put in coffee can turn then on your key see if your pumping fuel. Better yet connect a fuel puessure guage you should be getting around 38 PSI fuel pressure.

If you are getting fire to sparkplug and timing is close then would think next step would be remove your fuel rail and see if your injectors are functioning properly (squirting fuel).

    Just some thoughts.

  13. I agree concerning added surface area..as you can see looking on my pipes you will notice reflective tape. I just remember awhile back some people painting their pipes black or a similar dark color. I would think that that would absorbe heat....So then I looked back from my construction and Boy Scout days the use of reflective material could possibly reflect heat away to a point...how much who knows

  14. I have mine routed from turbo to I/C ran it across between radiator and engine then thru passenger side into my NPR I/C then outlet of I/C (cold air side) ran from I/C thru driver's rad mount side into TB...Basically because I seem to remember Scottie-GNZ measuring the temps as you say and found them a bit cooler that way so I did it that way. Was more of a hassel but Oh well!...If you click on my photos below under 280ZXT you can see the routing
