  1. ATI of Lexena, Kansas has a new centrifugal supercharger kit for the 350Z & G35. It develops 369 RWHP at 7 PSI of boost. It has an air-to-air intercooler and is 50 states legal. It ain't cheap. I priced one for my LS1 equipped 280Z and, installed, it was just under $6,000 but made right at 450 RWHP with no other modifications required. It would go to over 500 RWHP with ECM tweaking and larger capacity injectors.
  2. Mike - I don't think a Sentra normally makes any "rwhp" Also, look at what he says about the GS300/Supra transplant just before the Z article in the October issue. He's pretty much off base on that one too. Maybe the new kid with not much experience has the column?
  3. LS1 better for "stock" HP. LT1 probalby better if going for "maximum available" HP because of stronger block.
  4. Actually it ws the October '03 issue - the newest one out.
  5. Waht did you say Mike? Yuor ltteers wree srcmabeld!
  6. CorZette - No strictly V-8 Z clubs in Texas but there are several Z clubs and there are members in each of them that drive V-8 powered Z's. There also is an annual Z-car meet in Texas. In the past it has been in San Antonio in October. May have one in the DFW area next year as there are two clubs up here. The Z Club of Texas (Dallas) used to have an annual "Fastest Z Shootout" but I haven't heard about it for a few years. Might be time to resuurect it because we have some seriously fas Z's around now and the NHRA has changed its rules about IRS that makes it better for the Z.
  7. I picked up a copy of this magazine a few days ago. It had a posting in the "Mail Call" section where one of the editors told a guy he couldn't put a Buick GN motor in the 280ZX because it was too wide and would require modification of the Datsun's strut towers. He suggsted a RB26ETT as a replacement but added that the poor guy would have to source it out of Japan. I sent an email to them showing the 5.7 L LS1 in my car and asked that the guy be directed to Hybridz. Let's barrage the outfit with some emails and a few photos that show what can be transplanted into the Z car. Send to Evan.Griffey@primedia.com.
  8. The 1975 280Z was the first Z car with fuel injection. The 1974 260Z, although it had both 240 and 280 body styles, was stuck with a not-so-good carburator set-up it's entire model year.
  9. Obviously the real answer is neither - put an LS1 in!!!
  10. Michael - Yeee - Haaaw good buddy! Good to see the progress on the Vela Rossa! Keep up the pressure - paint that sucker and get the LS1 in it! Downsize your pictures and post them in your album here on HybridZ. Put the link in your signature box and then all you have to do is say - "Go look at my album" whenever you get some new pics!!! Hoping to get mine back this week or next. I "feel the need - the need for speed!"
  11. To chime in here. A true comparison has as few variables as possible - or it isn't a true comparison. If the goal is to compare the scarab vs. the setback then absolutely everything else should be the same. Obviously the exhaust length and driveshaft length will change and that should be documented but everything else needs to be identical. In addition to the performance comparisons previously listed it would be good to detail differneces in ease of installation, ease of maintenance, any clearance issues either one has with other components. How about the auxillaries like AC? These conversions can't strictly be all about the final performance. It needs to be about cost, time, versatitlity, and ease of maintenance too. A guy who wants one for a daily driver will need different data vs a drag racer vs a crooked track guy.
  12. Heck Mike, I know what you mean. I totally trashed one of those guys one evening with my totally stock, 200,000 mile original '83ZX. The look on his face when I told him it was NOT turbocharged was priceless!
  13. Oops - maybe I need to make that another $15,000. On the "list" for the car: Brake upgrade/conversion, coil-overs, flares, new paint job, new wheels & tires, redo on interior, new sound system - and - now that you mention it - maybe a procharger.
  14. I got started thinking and figure I'll get one more shot at it in about 3-4 years - when I get my next round complete - and another $7-8,000 into the car. These toys can be a realy money pit - but they are sooooo much fun.
  15. My experience with a Honda driver was much better. Guy in a nice Prelude slowly slides past me on the right (4 lanes each way), stuck his arm out the window and gave my car a big thumbs up. I was cruising in 6th at the time so I figured the Thumb was for how the car looked, and since he was so nice about it, I decided to show him it wasn't all looks. Caught up with him slowly and then when I was beside him I downshifted from 6th to 4th. That got him looking again so I downshifted to 3rd and cut the LS1 loose. A solid squall in third and then a loud chirp going into 4th at 95. Never did see him again.
  16. Details - what weight oil are you using? Synthetic or regular? How many miles are you driving each week to use 1/4 quart? Regular driving or hard? At 4,000 miles your engine should be "broken in" enough to be burning less than a quart per 6,000 miles. Then again, if you've been using a 5W-30 synthetic for your "break-in" oil then maybe not.
  17. Thanks guys. 12 years & $30K invested in this car now.
  18. YOu'll only go about 10 miles before you run out of JP-4 with that rig!
  19. multiple compressed air disconnects on central air compreessor with big tank. Multiple 110 outlets. Multiple 220 outlets for welder. Parts cleaner tank. AC & heat for year-round comfort. Exhaust extraction system so you can tune car inside without asphixiating yourself. Paint booth? Car rotissery easy chair and TV for wife so she can keep you company and still be entertained. several work benches set up for spicific funcitons. Lots of strorage space for parts and tools. Tour a Mercedes service dept. and see how a class operation sets up their service bays.
  20. Corzette - move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and you won't miss out on good looking women. We've got some of the finest in the country here.
  21. You need to run the pump continuously. If you run it on a temperature probe where would you put the sensor? If you put it in the radiator the pump will never come on because the hot water in the block would never have been pumped to the radiator. Then - if you put it in the block, where in the block? Save a lot of trouble - run it continuously and use a standard thermostat. Install the pump so it sucks from the radiator bottom and pumps to/through the engine block.
  22. My LS1 has NO, I repeat NO overheating problems despite being run in Texas in the summer with the AC on. It has the Z radiator recored to 4 rows and the twin, three-speed fans & shroud from a '98 Camaro Z-28. I do have the stock hood with the two vents originally provided on the 77-78 280Z.
  23. Lone Star 1 has installed a magnacharger on his LS1 powered 240Z. Don't think the installation was overly difficult but his hood clearance is extremely snug. I also know that a pro-charger can be installed on the LS1 in a Z pretty cleanly. Either installation will give 420-460 RWHP on an otherwise stock LS1.
