do you need anything to connect the relay board to the megasquirt, ie a male to female adapter or something?
-
something just occured to me, do i really need the harness and the relay board, doesnt the relay board plug into the db37 terminal of the megasquirt, making the wiring harness kinda useless? I already ordered both but I can always change it as I am paying by money order.
-
nevermind i answered my own question. Did you need any special connector to attach your relay board directly to the megasquirt, as i dont really feel like buying a cable.
-
just out of curiosity, what does the relay board do in reference to the megasquirt, and how does it make life easier. I already have the 83 turbo dizzy so this should be relatively simple, I think im gonna order the stuff today. Thanks alot guys

what other parts will i need to have it control ignition, so far i only know of the gm hei module. that means im looking at... Assembled megasquirt wiring harness water temp sensor intake air sensor gm hei am i missing anything

I am just loosing my mind now. I really just want this car to run, I would like to make it to for the z convention in NY in august. I can't seem to get it to run with the stock set up, and I'm not sure if I could get a megasquirt n spark extra set up assembled and running in time, not to mention that some of the stuff surrounding megasquirt seems pretty confusing too. This is officially a call for help, i am getting frustrated to the point of making stupid mistakes now and would like some help.
-
yea, your right. where in the 240 dash would the ballast resistor be located.
-
thanks for the help, though a good bit of that doesnt really apply as i dont have the ignition harness like a 280z does, I'm quite stumped and think im gonna order megasquirt, but i would still like to get it running as i havent driven my car in two months, and dont want to wait another one.

nope had a couple quarts lying around the house from painting railings, put it in my spray gun and went at it. On the turbo swap front, i found out i lied, there is also one other connector that is unknown, it is an 8 prong plug with only 5 wires going into it, it comes out of the main harness at about the same point as the other unknown 8 prong, on the interior side of the firewall. just to let you guys know. I think i will post this particular problem in the ignition and electrical section as a question.

it is satin black rustoleum, thinned a tiny bit.

As far as the four prong plug, I agree with you all that it is equivilent to the six prong in everyone elses car. If you look at the picture of the diagram that i posted, there is a six prong plug with one unused, well four of those wires match up and are in order, the last one is a white and i have a free white wire hanging around near by you can actually see it chillin in that photo lower down, so im guessing that is what that is. I will connect the green, black/w and blue/red as described. I had already connected the black/w and green and heard the ecu relay switch on so i think im in business there. Now i just need to know where the wires from the 8 prong connector need to go, as i am most definately getting no spark at all. Oh and to answer a few questions that i saw, my garage is really messy because my dad and I painted the porch a couple of days prior to my starting this so all the junk from there had to go in the garage, my garage is too dark to do any real work anyway. I will start routing the wiring through the dash when i get the thing running, its easier for me to chase down problems when ive got everything out in front of me. I mean i only have one plug left to diagnose so it should be too bad. I love my satin black, though it has a few odd annoying things about it. It is very very very hot in the summer, moreso than normal black. Im talking 113 crusing at street speeds with the windows down. Mine in particular is very impossible to wash, as it is very rough to the touch, and tears up rags and cloths leaving annoying little hairs on the car. On the bright side it takes alot for it to look dirty, and its very different and mean.

Allright, i got the engine in the car and did a good bit of the wiring. Now I am left with two plugs that i don't know what to do with but i am positive control power to the computer and ignition. One of them is an eight prong plug and the other is a four prong. the four prong is close to and connected to the fusible links and the eight prong is on the dash side of the harness. what would help me the most would be if someone could tell me which wires in each connector are necessary and where they need to go. keep in mind that i will be operating my fuel pump manually by switch( anti theft type feature) and the switched power to the computer and ignition will be a toggle switch instead of the ignition key. If someone could guide me that would be great, I have pictures of the plugs in question in this post

well the zx is rotted to the point of being scary to jack up from anywhere but the suspension. I'm probably going to strip it and part it out. I'm gonna do some research and see if I can afford megasquirt, if I can then I will do that. What, other than the computer itself, would I need to get the car running with a megasquirt setup.
-
Whoa, since when can you tune megasquirt on a pda. That is quite awesome, and i think that will be changing my plans. If I can hook that up sometime soon then I will do that. How much is a complete megasquirt set up with larger injectors ballpark?
-
I want to go megasquirt and I probably will eventually, but I really need to have the car driveable pretty soon. Even if I did get it I would have to tune it at Joe's (Ragz260) house as I dont have laptop, or a pc for that matter. So I need to at least get it limping along for now.

As I know I will be needing help often enough and like to share my progress, I decided to start a thread somewhat documenting my l28et swap into a 72 240. So far I have removed both engines and transmissions from the cars and am preparing to swap the trannies and install the engine in my z. All has gone fairly smoothly as of yet, with the exception of some stubbornness on the part of the 280zx exhaust. I know the wiring is where I will be defeated. Part of the problem is the zx I bought was not an orinal zx-t, it was a zx that had an engine die and the previous owner tried to do the swap, he attempted to replace the entire harness for the whole car, and failed. Both zx's were 1983 models. So now I have a whole bunch of wires, and will definately need help identifying some of them, especially things ignition related. I wouldnt have bought the car like this except for the fact that it was 300 bux, and close. Anyway, here are the pics so far.

the welds between the three main pipes were mainly to hold it for alignment purposes, there will be alot more chassis than that, dont worry. thats why they are so crappy, I would tack it in a couple places, then have to break them to get the rear end straight and went through that process about 10 times to get it square. Then i had to weld over that, Eventually, when I have the rest of the chassis built, I will grind down those welds and do them right.

a year later and i have finally started this project. This time it's school sponsored (final project, I convinced them that since im going into engineering i should be allowed to build this.) At this point the hardest part will be getting the ignition system working. The engine is out of a 1996 katana 600, I have the entire engine assembly, coils, and wiring harness. I am still missing some ignition stuff but I will worry about that later. If anyone in the northeast has knowledge or experience with motorcycle engines and wants to help me out with this bit I would appreciate it. Here are quite a few pics of my progress.

datsun280zmike and I pulled his l28 in three peices, tranny off, unbolted the head(with the whole exhaust system attached!) and then dropped the block out from under the thing. It wasnt too hard to do, but i wouldnt do it with an engine i planned on reusing.

VinhZXT, I live in newark. The other turbo Z guys in the area are Joe (ragz), who has a mean v8z a very mean turbo z and a stock z, and datsun280zmike who I am helping with an rb26dett swap. I would love to get together and have a cruise or go to a track. Englishtown is my local.

jersey, I am a fellow jersey z'er and I will be doing a turbo swap this summer. As you seem to have done VERY well with your somewhat mild setup, I would like to talk with you or maybe ask for some help when I start and tune my swap. I have already talked with ragz and want to get a good group of guys together to keep me from blowing myself up. Plus, I really really want a ride in your car to know what I am getting myself into, as your car's performance is EXACTLY what I am looking for. -will

My friend has a 6s auto that i have spent a great deal of time in. I love the car, it handled well, was decently quick in a straight line, braked well, had a nice interior and a solid feel. The only problems he has had with it have been 2 headlights burning out in 2 years, and some transmission quirks, though to be fair he beat the crap out of that car and I would expect some quirks from any car after that.

Wand where is this convention and why do I not know about it. I am up for the drive. I am in northern Jersey and would love to have some z company.
