Thanks! and thanks for the advice, I've had many a modified turbo car on the past. So I know what all the advantages / disadvantages are. As said earlier, I'm going to be running HP tuners to tune everything. I've seen a lot of turbo LS that do VERY well and make big power numbers. And I've seen others that just suck and make less power then I made NA. We'll see!

I'm going to be ordering a turbo blanket for the car in the next couple weeks here. Every other exhaust piece is going to be wrapped as well. As long as the coolant temps stay down, and nothing melts then I'll just roll with what I've got. I am also going to be moving the fan to the front side of the radiator and use it as a pusher. (JUST looked up the fan part number and found out I've been using a pusher fan as a puller. ) If heat is still an issue then I'll be looking into a new radiator or something to keep things under control. There are only 2, E85 stations here in San Diego, and both are 20+ mile drives from my house. My intentions with the car is to make it a pump gas car, so I'll be sticking with the 91* Eventually I'm going to swap the Heads out for the 317 heads to lower the compression like Cobrakilla suggested.

Well, last night I got my pan pulled off. Brought it into work today and drilled me a nice big hole. Brought it over to a friends house who could weld me a bung on it after work, came home and installed the damn thing! pics! And for the pics you've all been waiting for! Its not bolted down or anything, nor is the manifold done, but this is where the turbo will be sitting for the most part. Enjoy!

Thanks guys, The cross over pipes are 2.5" 304 stainless. Tonight after work I pulled the pan and will be getting the oil return bung welded on tomorrow. Hopefully getting the pan installed back on the car tomorrow as well.

Most of my buddies said the same stuff. "That turbo is going to fall apart!" ect ect ect... I've heard it all. "Those compressor blades are glued on." Hah. Anyways... So heres some pics of what all I did. For starters, Heres a bunch of intercooler pics. Had to of been the easiest, fastest, and smoothest intercooler install I have ever done in my life. Heres the "modified" manifolds installed. Compared to the original ones I had, there is a bit more room between runners to get some spark plug wires on there. I spent the rest of the weekend working on the support bracket(hideous, I know) , collector, and middle section of the manifold. Oh yaaa, I forgot to mention. All the welding, and fab work is done by yours truly. And the welder I am currently using is a 200$ Harbor Freight, scratch-to-start tig. Works bitchin!

The turbine is a T4 twin scroll flange. The outlet ID is 3.5" and O.D. (from outside of the Vband thing) is 4". I haven't really seen any china turbo's much bigger then this one. What are you running a T6 turbine flanged, turbo on? Pics!!! Thanks for the compliment on the manifolds! I actually spent a bit of time on them yesterday cutting the flanges off and welding in 3/4" tubing to space it out. Gave me a lot more clearance and should work out after all. What is freshalloy? Which 60mm wastegate are you running? I've never actually heard of anyone having problems with them, yet. Except for the plunger not sealing 100% They are a little bit more cheesy then a real tial, but for the price you cannot beat it. I've watched the video in your sig. many times already. I freakin love it! Car looks good man! So I got a bit more work done to the car this weekend. I got my brace all finished. Its pretty beefy, but very ugly. As long as it works, right? Got the intercooler all mounted up. Also got the manifolds bolted into the motor. I finished up my collector, and got it connected to the driver side manifold. I'll post pics later. I am POOPED! Time for some Taco Bell.
-
Oh ya! I'm getting the rod bolts too while I've got the pan off for "bung welding" Good call. Thats pretty bad ass about those heads. but after all, this is all going in a Z. And anything upward of 450 at the wheels should be enough to satisfy anyones needs. I sure hope I'm satisfied after the turbo swap, cars are an expensive hobby.

The lines in the turbine housing just look like casting marks, not a big deal. Cobrakilla, Those are some excellent suggestions!!! Thanks! I've already looked into getting some 317's from LS1 tech. They seem to go pretty cheap on there and are abundant. And thanks for the info on the stock plug wires. You're suggestions and help are much appreciated, so feel free to add anything, anytime.

Ya, those truck manifolds do look pretty nice! And the spark plug wire fitment did cross my mind, I was considering getting something like this: Would possibly be small enough on the spark plug end to make it doable. And plan B was going to be getting "make your own" wire kit and run it all behind the manifolds and plug 'em in from under. Everything will be heat wrapped including the plug wires them selves. I guess I'll just have to cross that bridge when I get there. So how much longer till you get the car running? As for the exact pieces I used... the 90* peice 45735K215 The T's 45735K255 and then the reducers on the ends of the manifolds I'm pretty sure I used these 45735K425 Once again these are all off of the site I provided earlier, "McMasterCar.com" Rustorbust, As long as its dry out then I'll be working on it Sunday - Monday. This is also considering that my 2.5" 304 stainless U-bends / 45* bends come in on Friday.
-
Thanks dude! I picked up the pieces from McMaster.com Its such a great site. Once you're in the site, in the search window on the left punch in, "stainless steel butt-weld pipe fittings" and it lets you choose from Elbows, Caps, T's, Couplings and Stub ends. You can get pieces in different sizes, different metals, different wall thickness, ect... I've built an equal length manifold for my old turbo Colt using pieces from that site in the past and its still holding up over a year later. More pics to come this weekend!

I'm getting some 60# injectors and am going to be running some duel Walbro 255's. For the time being, I'm gonna run the stock Vette regulator / filter. Eventually I'm going to swap to custom fuel rails with a boost (whatever you call it) regulator. For management I'm using HP tuners, Starting off with blow through MAF, and will eventually swap to 2 bar Speed Density.

I've got some 243's off of an 02 ZO6. Suppose to bump compression to 10.4:1. With that said, I'm going to be running pretty low boost. Woah!! I had no idea that there was / would be another turbo V8 Z in San Diego, thats awesome! I'm right off Mira Mar rd. in Scripps Ranch. Got some link or pics to your project? This rain is killin me! I'm hoping it will let up before this weekend so I can knock out a bunch of work. I figure if I run the boost low enough that I can keep the power maintainable. Or at least I hope so! (crosses fingers)

Joker, Thanks bro! I Just decided to build my own so I know it's going to fit how I want it to. It also makes me feel pretty good about myself when someone asks. Where did you buy the manifolds from? and I can say.. "Ya, I built those myself." Reef, China / EBay turbos are just non name brand stuff that basically came from China mass produced and is sold for dirty cheap. This turbo IS huge, pictures don't do justice. I'll probably make more then 100 hp for sure, But my goal is to get in the 500's, and keep it in there. I don't want the car to get out of control. Well, not too out of control

Hey guys, So I recently decided to go with a turbo instead of going with the Heads / Cam / Intake / TB package, or NOS route. I'm going to be building my own manifolds, and piping, and everything else. I've pretty much got everything I need, just need to get crackin on it when time lets me. I'll be updating with pics of everything along the way, thought I would share. My goal is to gain at least another 100hp, and spend as little money as possible. Here's what I've got so far. For manifolds I've decided to build some Log manifolds. Due to basic design, cost of materials, and simplicity I was able to finish both manifolds for roughly 200$ They should do the trick. Took a couple hours to build both. I've already picked up a wastegate, ( same wastegate that dustin280zx is using in the Gen 1 / 2 V8 threads. ) And for Blow off valves I'm going to be using 2 factory blow off valves from an early 90's Mitsubishi Eclipse. I ordered all my Oil line fittings from Summit and picked up a few from Home Depot, Never knew how cheap buying AN fittings could be. I was able to find a few of these fittings for less then 5$ pretty sweet. I also got an Ebay intercooler. Which should fit, and perform well. And for the best part of it all, the turbo... I ordered a GT45 Ebay turbo. Knock it all you want, but the price was soo cheap that I figured it was worth a shot! After all, its got a divided T4 flange so if it ends up breaking, I have plenty of options for a replacement. price was 330$ shipped. The shaft spins perfectly fine, and continues to spin when you let go. Zero in / out shaft play. Normal, minimal side / side play. I can't wait to run this thing! So thats all I've got for now as far as pics go. My Z is up on jack stands, all the N/A stuff removed just waiting for this weekend. Like I said, I'll be updating with pics and info along the way. Enjoy!

Well, anyone here can correct me if I am wrong... but the LS1 is a Gen3 engine, and the LS3 is a Gen4, But the the LS2 is also a Gen4 and since the JCI mount kit works for the LS2, then it should work for the LS3. Also, the header flanges are the same between the LS1,6,2,3,7. LQ9, and 4. GM was cool like that.
-
I was around 3500 - 3800 rpm, basically just dumped the clutch and held on with my foot to the floor. Seemed to do the trick. My Cam is pretty sweet on the street, I have no complaints at all. It makes 300ft. lbs at the wheels at 2500 rpm. So unless you try and pass something while you're idling, its pretty good.
-
Holy cow! Thats one insane deal!! You're gonna one hell of a beast on your hands.
-
yes, drivers side mount. You're not alone my friend. luckily when you mash on the gas, the motor torque's in the rotation that pulls the alternator up and away from the mount
-
My Alternator was damn close when I first got everything installed into the car. Thanks for the reminder to go make sure its not going to make contact! I think I slipped some rubber in there between the Hot post on the side of the alternator just in case it decided to short out on me. I've been alright so far.
-
By all means look through whatever I've got, no biggie. That mount is basically my finished product, minus two holes. It turned out pretty good and seems to be doing the trick just fine. I inspected it after the night of beating the ♥♥♥♥ out of it, and it seems to be holding up quite well. Not bending at all. Bigdeez... Get some ET drag slicks and get your car back on the track!! With your power, you should be trapping 100mph in the 1/8th, and pulling some 10 sec. E/T's.
-
Hey thanks! I'm running the LS6 intake manifold, Fasts are freaking expensive!! The throttle body is stock as well. I'm really not sure what the car weighs, if I had to guess I would say just under 2500lbs.
-
Thanks for the compliments guys! I'm running a T56 in the car, and the slicks are 26 x 8.5 x 15, mounted on stock Z wheels obviously. The car has a VLSD Q45 R200. Never had any problems with it at all. The heads are stock un ported C5 Zo6 heads. The "243 castings" I'll tell my bud you guys like his pics, that'll make him happy.
-
I've got no experience with EFIlive either, but I have been using HPtuners for a while now. Its very hard to get use to, but once you've got the hang of it its pretty user friendly and gives you a ton of adjustability. Good luck with the EFI live!

So this past weekend I got my car out there on the track. Ended up doing much better then I was expecting. Last outing I made to the track I did 8.0@94 with a 2.0 60 ft. Well... new heads, tires and tuning got me a 7.1@98.4 with a 1.5 60 ft. best mph of the night was 99.7. Unfortunately their's no 1/4 mile tracks within 100miles. So I have to stick with the 1/8th mile. I got 9 passes in, did not break anything the entire night. Drove it to and from. Not to mention had a great time! heres a vid of my last few runs: And a few pics that my buddy took.

LS1 motor+harness for $900?
ColtGT4g63 replied to Dirt114's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Save yourself the trouble and just buy a T56, and make it fit. T56's are awesome, insanely strong, shift when you want 'em to, transmissions. I have seen them for sale on LS1 tech for average price of 1,000$ - 1,200$ for a good used one.
