2.2 60' Im just trying to give you a chance garret. Maybe if i had one of those niffty z32 tranny's we would have a good race this march.

It needs to be at a place where the exhaust gas can easily change flow through the gate. The best way is to have it symetric with the turbo. If you look at the manifold putting it towards the front would be a definite no no it would make the exhaust gasses have to flow "backwards" to get out of hte w/g and then change directions again to go back otthe turbo. This is the main point corky stresses in his book for a bad design. I think where we put it here will work out just fine but if you check out my thread i posted a little farther up or check out timz's setup you will see what I think is the OPTIMAL place for hte w/g on the stock manifold

280zxt I believe from looking at the halfshafts and the diffy mount. And yea those cv's are good, some people go with 300zxt (I did) but hte 280zx is prolly plenty for most everybody.

Just from driving the BMW's Ive had, I think the BMW would make an excellent track car, they are very balanced and easy to controll. I have very few mods to my e36 and I cant wait till I get started with some more. Z's are great too though, and just like you I would be torn between the two. Im running Bilstein Sport struts and eibach springs, New control arms, balljoints, bushing etc. And it already on rails for a daily sedan. I cant imagine what some sways and coilovers would do. The down side with bimmers is... COST everythign seems to be expensive unless you are into fabbing stuff yourself, which it looks like you are BTW my e36 will most likely be my next project with 225K miles can you say HYBRID coming soon?

12.1 @ 124mph running 15psi in my 2300lb 240z, traction serverely limited. Running 20psi and some MT's soon....

Hahahaa definitly not my highschool, my autotech teacher would buy wrenches from the flea market. It was a good day when you could find the right wrench or anything that somebody hadnt fubared up.

happy birthday little buddy!

dang I actually dig that audi haha. I think it looks pretty good. But I have a feeling the chrome paint is jsut a bad idea in genral, better paint the hood black!!!

I mounted mine with hte supplied sticker tape from MSA to see if I liked how the covers looked. I let it set over night and they fell off lol, so you definitly cant mount them that way. I really liked 'em, so I ended up perminently mounting them using the screws MSA provided, I do have fiberglass buckets though. Anyhow I thought the raw aluminum brackets were to flashy and caught your eye, I powdercoated mine satin black and they are pretty unobtrusive.... Had I thought about it before I stuck them on with tape, I would have cutt off hte wings and just had the small L bracket piece.

While we are at it lol: This one is about ot be smoke chrome powdered as soon as I fill in a few left over stock bung holes, ill have to post pics when its done:

Mechanical Engineering from NC State University. Prolly a minor in Graphic communication. I dunno if you jsut wanted to get into workin with cars or a race team a motorsports engineering program or tech school might be a great place to look. UNC Charlotte has a great program for Motorsports engineering....I've thought heavily about switching....but I want a degree that can be used for a broader range of things.

somebodey posted a link to the build up of that car, AWD vette chassis very cool. Ill have to look for it

Grumpyvette im am continually impressed by your ability to create super long posts! That would have taken me and hour or more to put together those pictures and what not. Thanks for the info. The 180sd was much more welder then I was planning on buying. After hearing many people talk about what a great little welder it is i think ill be happy with it. When I start a shop perhaps the 5,000 dollar welder will come along!

good carbide bit on a die grinder.

Its supposably in like new condition. With one bottle of gas run through it in its lifetime. it sounds like he welds as his job and menioned that he needed a smaller more mobile unit to go in his truck from his new job I dunno. Comes with all the paper work, i jsutgotta get a bottle. I think I paid the going rate for one, considering its like new I am happy. I paid 1200, I think the comparable new welder form miller is the 200sd. Best price I could find is 2,000.

Just bought a Miller 180SD tig welder. Ive been wanting one of these for a long time. Found one locally with very few hours on it and decided to go ahead with it. Im still up at school but my dad is going to pick it up from the guy for me. Cant wait to go home and get some practice in!!! mmmm I cant wait to start playing with aluminum. And on second thought I dunno why I posted, but im excited hehe.

hahah yeah if you get that mine is going on ebay. I actually am seriously thinking about puttting mine up soon after seeing what that rb25 z went for....

I actually dont think that the w/g location is that bad, if it was on the oppsite end it would be alot worse, because you would have flow reversal and would be more likely to jsut vent one runner. Corky has several picture of log manifolds in his book, but each one has the turbo placed the the very end of the log, not how the nissan turbo is. Anyway, dan4011 I wil have my car at the triangle show, we prolly wont have matt's ready by then though. i can wait to go either should be good fun. Its real close to me since i go to school in raleigh.
-
for those of you that dont know what a race gate is, you should go rent "thrust racing" from your local block buster lol.
-
Haha I told mat somebody would say its less then ideal. I think for a log manifold like this it will work fine, the entire stock manifold is less then ideal. I really lke the location; its super servicable and not much plumbing. i placed my w/g right where the turbo flange is on the bottom, it turned out really nice and I would say its in the ideal location. But have fun getting it off there without removing the entire manifold. My w/g install thread: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=108785

Hey guys, Me and Matt have been working on his car for the past little while. So far we have done a painless rewire and fitted all new autometers... we are currently working on the motor. The motor came from a florida car and looked like it had been pulled out of a junk yard. On initial tear down things didnt look good at all....... blown headgasket for sure: I was pretty worried at this point, pulling the drain plug and having over 2 gallons of stuff come out was a bad sign. However as I tor it down I started checking clearences, and everything was 100% factory. Inspection of the bearings and crank showed very little wear. So I think we got off lucky, doesnt look like it was run long at all in this in this condition... The problem looks like it was caused by over heating the HG leaked looked like a 3&4 problem right between the cylinders. Tracked it down to a warped head. Sooo.... Ended up replacing all the bearings with factory spec pieces, new timing gear, water pump, rings etc. We installed ARP head studs and rod bearings. Sorced a freshly rebuilt head from my buddy and called it a day for the internals. Now to the fun stuff: The clutch unit is a ACT HD pressure plate and a orgnaic street disc. Should hold a decent amount of power and stuff be great for daily driving. Ryan recommended this set-up. With the motor in we started on turbo work this weekend. After having great luck MIG welding my external gate, we decided to do the same for his. We welded on a new turbo flage to space out hte turbo .5" and welded on a pipe for the wastegate. Turbo is a 60-1 .62 a/r exhaust housing. Gate is Tial 38mm. Man and machine: So thats where we are now. New sets are powdecoatin ghte intake manifold, finishing all the plumbing nad hooking up the EMS. W00t. Ill try and keep the thread updated. Lemme know what yall think. -Austin

NO it doesnt matter what others think. If you buy it its your car do what you want. A 70 model is pleasently un complicated, and lightweight. However they also are much more prone to rust then the 260's and 280's, the 70's also have a different rear suspension that isnt so hot for the driveshaft u joints if i recall. But when you swap in a r200 all that will be taken care of . A winner Z car is one with as little rust as you can find. It doesnt really matter what year, yo ucan make them all look the same.
