I'm sure its realitively doable.. I've an magazine article with a 260 with a 496 rat motor 900hp and 1200 with nitrous... Guy claimed though he was going through diffs, he was still running a stock R180 He was straightlining it... He was in southern Georgia if I recall.. Atlanta area...... looked mean as hell..

I know I should have taken pics at the time but we were all laughing so hard.... A guy brought in his dodge omni into the shop because his brakes were not stopping the car... HE Drove it to the SHOP! PUt the car on the hoist and removed the wheels...AAAAAHHHHHHH it had solid rotors...with 70% of each rotor GONE.. not there.... One caliper was ripped off its mounts, the other had a piece of broken rotor jammed in between the pads... ( the other caliper had no pads..or piston etc...) The back brakes were drums.. one drum had obliterated itself and the shoes, springs etc.. were missing... the rear drivers side rear was the only one that had any resemblance of a chance of slowing this car down. Guy was lucky to be alive getting to the shop.....he had no idea and only wanted to spend a few hundred bucks tops to fix...he didn't think it was that bad....OMFG!!! Sorry to add my story to this thread, but it is one i will never forget... Your pic has the same idea...death waiting to happen.... how do people not notice this on their car?.....I think a rotor obliterating itself would make some noise? hehehe

Don't let that volt guage fool ya. I ahve the same pump in my 280. Works awsome, but when i hooked it up using the stock wiring harness (my 280's original wire harness) and placed the fuel pump in the stock bracket (fits nicely) it would surge, alternate between higher normal pitch and a lower pitch...oddly enough, it did it when I had my turn signal activated and I was idleing.. when driving, it sounded fine... My alt was new and running perfect, and my guage didn't show anything out of the ordinary voltage wise... I guess the pump was drawing too much voltage and was struggling for power with the "same?" part of the fuse as my turn signals... Heavy guage wire from the battery is the best solution...

Well I haven't touched either Z's in weeks now, but I hasn't stopped my mind from wandering to them every day! 8) I was siftting through hundreds of posts this past week or two (hours every day) and I came across a little tid bit... a warning actually... Its is about the 370cc injectors from the ford svo and Xr4t i's something about red tops being 30lb inj and brown tops @ 35bls... does anyone have a part # for the brown cap injectors? I haven't bothered to pick up a set yet till spring, but I might as well get my info correct before I walk in there an argue with a clerk when i say "what year?...uh.. any year will do".... "uh what kind of car?" "svo or xr4ti...what ever you got parts for" "what engine type?..uh i dunno"... "YES I need SIX you moron!!!hehehe You know the drill... BTW this is for my vg30et Thanks...

Help: Who has experience with spacers and track use?
ZR8ED replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I've used 1/4" spacers on the front (not bolt up) for years and years now... no probs.. I have used 1.5" adapters in the back and pushed 18psi on a race track all day with no probs.. I ran those same adapters on the drag strip and all summer on the street... no issues or concerns.. (I now have correct offset wheels to get them where I wanted them in the wheel wells) Pure seat of the pants.... -
240z Seat questions... Just want to make sure.
ZR8ED replied to Ron240zxt's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
It might "fit", but I doubt you will get much movement in the seat, and I might hit the arm rest (280 style handles) I've had lots of different seats in my Z.. I'm looking for a permanent seat in the car, and I'm trying extremely hard to keep it under 20" overall width.. not easy, but not impossible..Ractive is the seat i'm looking at right now...I took some measurements off a seat in the store, and I just need some measurements of my...(for reaasurance) I don't want to swap seats again.. BTW I have had 280zxt seats comfy but sits almost 1" higher.. modded 240 seats... Fiero seats.. which I like right now...but something about them is just not right, so I'm willing to make one last swap... -
My first Z came to me.... Back in the early 80's my dad was looking at brand new 300zxt's! I fell in love with them.... I always though i'd like to get one when i got my liscence. Then I discovered that it was actually possible... the 280zx.. basically the same (in my mind) and I would likely be able to afford one... Well I got talked into a mustang when I was 17 and drove that hunk of junk for 1.5 years. Well the summer of 1989 found me with a girlfriend that would not set foot on my Hobie cat 18 Catamaran sail boat...I had no one to sail with anymore so I put it up for sale... Near the end of the summer I got a phone call from a friend of a friend who kept his catamaran where I did. He didn't have cash for the boat but inquired if I would be interested in a 280z.. "A 280z"? you mean a 280zx?...NO a 280Z... a first gen...whats a first gen look like? To make the story a bit shorter, I stopped by for a look and maybe a test drive... I was not all that impressed with the chopped off looking back...(in comparison to a 280zx)...but I took it for a boot around the block (no muffler on it) and I fell in love... I worked out a trade with some cash and I brought home an original 1978 280 with 152,000 km's on it... I've had that car almost 15 years now...and I've slowly modded it every year...I've owned 11 z's now, but my 280 has always been my baby... the only car that ever made me want to sell it (when i was feeling very low and the car was broken down) was a TURBO charged 300zxt that I had as a daily driver/winter car...hehehehe.. I still have my 280, and now ITS TURBO charged to !!!!!! I'm into Z's for the long haul....If i had a spare million $, I'd spend it on my Z... I think someone here said it once.."if I had all the money I spent on cars, I'd spend it all on cars" I've had ups and downs with the car over the years, but in the larger scheme of things.. I have no regrets.

Z31 swap onto '81-83 turbo motor (write-up please, someone?)
ZR8ED replied to a topic in Turbo / Supercharger
http://www.zcar.com/forums/read.php?f=1&i=418541&t=418410#reply_418541 here is a link to a thread at zcar.com that has wiring diagrams for the z31 ecu into a 280zx harness... I was just passing through, and stumbled across it.. -
Hmmm My 03 Altima has a Bose system 8 speakers and an indash 6 cd changer, and 240watts.. The car sounds amazing...one of the best factory systems i've owned....

Well I'll take a stab at your prob and give you a bit of background on the Z as well.. It might shed some light or give you an idea. Some of these ideas btw are my personal opinion/experience..so carry some salt in your pocket when reading this... 1st is this a 240Z? does it have the stock hood "ala" no hood vents? later model 280's have the vents to help reduce "heat soak" of the fuel rails after coming off the highway in summer and shutting the car off for a few minutes... (nissan factory fix) 2nd Do you have a stock clutch fan? is so..junk it... buy a high quality electric fan.. 3rd Wrap wrap wrap your fuel lines. 4th change your fuel filter.. if it was replaced last year.. change it again...one fill up with crappy dirty gas, and your new filter is junk... 5th check your timing...check your spark plugs... are they looking lean?..(ie clean... or tan...or black and sooty?) 6th check your thermostat. you should have approx 180 degrees... 7th do you have an air dam out front?.. bumpers?.. what is blocking your rad?...anything?...(not including i/c) I have an air dam with a aluminum belly pan under the engine bay...no probs with heat... I have a 260 bumper out front as well, and a huge i/c blocking my rad... I plan on using aluminum sheeting to help direct air at my i/c. I have a big hollow area infront of my i/c between it and the air dam... I plan on filling it in to reduce air turbulance infront of the i/c.. 8th is your fuel return working?...is it circulating hot fuel back to the tank?.. 9th just because you have a turbo timer doesn't mean you can go WOT down the street and then just park the car and let it idle....and hope it will stay cool...(it won't ) Yea not the be all end all, but its a start.... Good luck.. keep us posted...

What is a guy going to play with when his toys are put away during winter... Digital video editting applications---recommendations--
ZR8ED replied to Tim240z's topic in Non Tech Board
I use movie shaker (came with my sony viao) The windows movie maker is about as good.. both are fairly easy to use...(heck i never read the instructions, and I've done some pretty cool vids.. I never tried the image mixer that came with my sony mini dv.. ( I was already using movie shaker.. BTW movie shaker has a special format for uploading to the imagestation site... it turned my 48meg 3min vid into a 3meg vid ...my video called "MIB" -
I have paid as much as 1000.00 Cdn for a lsd R200. I have sold them for as much as 600.00 usd as well. They are pretty rare up here...Of course if you can find one in the J/Y.. you can probably scam it for under 200.00...IF you can find a z in the J/Y bwaahahahaha! I have access to another deal on one...when I pick it up...you guessed it...I'll start asking 500 usd.. I've sold every one I have ever got my hands on.. no probs... West coasters balk at that price.. east coasters will slit their best friends throat to beat him to the deal...

I have a small problem with front weight/wheelgap
ZR8ED replied to auxilary's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Auxilary.. you are now in the same boat I'm in... Stiff springs are lost on our cars with the reduced wieght up front... (though yours sounds much lighter than even mine...) Anyways...I upgraded my rear springs to allow a bit more clearance for the rear tires and to fight the massive squat from the extra torque of my new power plant..I thought I needed to upgrade my front springs as well... NOT... I have my stocko springs original "ala" 1978 with 4 coils cut approx (can't remember its been way too long) I do recall some calcs and it was approximiated that my front springs were in the 150 lb range.... Stock is very low 100's.. I want to reduce mine even further to correct my understeer..(which has come back since I widened the rear track 6" ++)... go figure I didn't catch in your post if you had coil overs or not.....you may want to look into stock springs, and cut to get your ride height... If you have coil overs.. then you need a much lighter spring up front.. 25lbs less is not very much.....50-75lbs sounds much better.. Corner weighting the car as some people have mentioned is the correct method... mine is the low budget method of educated guesses from past experience of poor guesses....hehehe -
I aggree with the "daily driven" Z' makes it tough to find decent tires.. I ran the Kumho Victoracer 700's on the back 265/45/16's.. with a lsd They hooked up so well, I managed to scare myself on a couple of launches They work ok for "weekend warrior" z's only... I have now switched over to Yokohama AVS Sports and I am very happy with how well they hook so far... 1st gear is an easy spin... 2nd...not so easy...no spin in 3rd... When I had the Kumho's I was pushing 300 ft/lbs of torque easy. I"m not too sure what it is up to right now... my fastest official1/4 time I got last year was with the E brake on.... so ????? Anyways I believe I am sacrificing grip switching to the yokohamas, but now I get the ability to drive in all kinds of weather, and not afraid to put some serious mileage during the summer.. my 0.02 cents

I have a ton of Video to offer... I have made many z car videos and put some on vhs as well.. some are quite long.. 45min... WAY too big to digitize and email... I to am still working on my videos.. Part 2 to my "MIB" video and just a general Z video. I just finished a while back now....a video of MK II supras, and an exclusive video of my "MIB" partners wicked 82 Supra GTS. "Little Devil" Some can be found on Kazaa... Anyways.. I"ll share some of my video footage... I have "IN car" stationary camera stuff, and third party "car" footage... Maybe I should have some of my vhs transferred to DVD? My best video was called "spin city" and probably "Day of the Z" they are both more than 30 min long... Anyone interested?..hmmmm Email me Drax for more info on what you want.. I'm sure many will send you some cool stuff, but I may be able to fill in the blanks with some unique footage....

How about Ractive? these seats looked pretty good, though I have not found any dimensions on them... Priced well to! http://www.maxx-performance.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MP&Category_Code=RESRR

The seats need to be around 19" wide to be able to sit low enough in our cars (at least the 280) cause it has a different mounting setup. I have the Fiero seats in my 280. They were recovered by the previous owner (I got them from the J/Y) with sheep skin seat and back with tan suede bolstering The sheep skin is thicker than the stock material... I put on simple black seat covers till I could figure something out with them.. They now sit slightly higher... less than an inch. I use the stock 280 rails, and welded 3/8 thick flat bar to the seat (bolted were I was able to mount them in the stock seat locations) I then bolted my rails to the flat bars which let me centre the seat where I wanted. I don't hit my head on the roof (I'm 5ft 8) even when I wear my helmet. Though my helmet can touch my side roof roll cage hoop if I wiggle my head around while strapped in. I'm thinking of recovering the seat, and have the sheep skin removed, and maybe pull/cut some of the seat bottom out to give me a bit more head room... cost 450.00per seat...cdn$ If I get an aftermarket seat, I need it to be less than 19" wide with a low bottom to give me room to instal the seat... It is easy to add a spacer to raise it up, but Not so easy to lower it, so I want one low to begin with. Sparco has a seat called the "roadster" It doesn't recline but looks very narrow and has a low seating position. But the price goes up from there...and If I am going to spend big bucks, I won't "settle" with just any low priced seat... Anyone have any comments on narrow seats?... I'd gladly give up some lateral support for a narrower seat that gives me more installation leeway...

Got a problem/decision.. what should I do?!? (long post)
ZR8ED replied to datsunlover's topic in Non Tech Board
Well you didn't have that Rx very long.. and neither the Z.... And you mention that you don't even have a place to store it?... you need to see if you can leave it at your GF's parents place?... Sorry man.. I'm not picking on ya at all, but that is a recipe for disaster... I have owned my Z for 15 years to get it this way... I have seen WAY too people come and go with their Z's... If you can't stick with it, your gonna lose.. If you flip flop around with projects, your gonna lose, If you need others assistance to maintain your hobby, your gonna lose..That takes some of your control away, when someone says " ya gotta move it/sell it" etc.. I can't help ya make the choice, but I can tell you juggleing projects.. ESPECIALLY projects in the beginning stages is bad news... Also.. sorry if it I sound like the devils advocate here....but you have no idea what that RX has been through since you had it...don't assume its in decent condition because that is the way you sold it... it could have seen some off road action, and may not be as strong/straight etc.. Parts break... and who knows where it was stored since then...beware of RUST, animals...or worse...police warrents...(since the car was never transfered out of your name, who knows what the car may have been used for....) Becareful.... Good luck... Don't bite off more than you can afford to lose... -
I think I posted too soon.. just north of me (2 hrs) some people were dying from the cold... -45 celcius... not a nice situation... Very cold last night....

I have written many how to's for Weber stuff over the years. Zcar.com has most of them... go to the 70-83 forum and search my name "ZR8ED" They are very old now, but just as informative.. I even did step by step how to tune them etc... Try searching under "weber warrior" it was a nick name I used in referencing lots of weber questions... All triple weber users became part of the "weber warrior" cult...hehe If ya can't find the articles, just drop me a line, and I'll help you out.

I broke in my engine with mineral oil 10w30 castrol..just like Nissan puts in from the factory. I was recommended by my engine builder/racer to run 20W50 syn, and that is what I am running now.... The 50 is the cold, and the 20 is the hot rating (99% certain) He said that is what he runs in all of his Z engines that he races with. We have cold weather here, and that is too thick, but my car is not on the road in winter anyways, so I'm quite satisfied with it so far... My pressure doesn't spike through the roof when cold... Runs about 3/4 on my stock guage, and 1/2 at idle... My .02 cents

I'll dig mine out and take some pics of the finished rear diffuser I built for my 280. I like that under shot... it gave me even more ideas... My front belly pan is like the one pictured on the same car.. It was custom cut to the shape of my air dam. ..I don't think you could make a "kit".. so many styles of airdams and such....Mine is also cut for clearance around my wheels so I can still turn the steering wheel all the way with out any rubbing, yet still have the max size of belly pan. My rear diffuser will work on any 1st gen.. mine simply goes under the gas tank and up as far forward as the diff. I'll try and get some pics up by the weekend.. Mine is complete..just not installed... It cost me $24 for the aluminum and $100 to have it cut and bent up... (mine is one piece)..
