  1. I've never really been a fan of that center piece. It looks good on that car and a couple others that I've seen, but otherwise...eh. Again, if I could go back I would've just stuck with the stock tail lights, but since I'm already this deep I might as well go down with the ship.

Messing around with paint brush about a year ago, I thought this turned out semi-decent:

    280zxcircletaillights.jpg

  2. how about something like these

I think they look good on that car, but don't see them coming out as well on the 280zx. The s130 has such a large, bulky and boxy rear that it's a bit difficult trying to find something that matches.

Just use the 82-83 280zx tail lights... Those are the best looking tails on a 280zx in my opinion.

Honest opinion on the z32 tails? They look really good just need to be raised alittle. They sit alittle low

At the time, I thought z32 lights would look killer...and I didn't care for the large bulky plastic looking stock lights. Honestly at this point, I think I would've rather stuck with them. But after spending so much $$$ into modifying the rear, I'd hate to have it all go to waste just to revert back to stock. I'm gonna try to get a direct rear picture today so I can play with my options a little more.

The ability to visualize a custom concept is a skill not possessed by everyone. Some people are naturals , many have formal design training and others have many years of expierience in the school of hard knocks. There is a process that needs to be followed to find an appealing design . Most of this is best handled as a series of sketches or photoshops till the desired effect is reached. Attention to the ratios between height and width amongst the entire rear bumper and tail lamp area is critical . Think of the back of the car as a human face. Position of the eyes , lips , brow , shape of the face . There is actually a ratio between these facial characteristics that defines natural beauty . Facial expressions also play a part . Dont mix angry eyes with a smile as an example. Its challenging to get it all together and sometimes you may need to seek outside help if you really want a good design.

I have customized a number of cars over the years and even when I had a good idea of what I or a customer wanted I still retained someone to draw things out before I started the project. Its really inexpensive when you consider all that is involved.

I completely agree with all of this, and I try to factor as much of this logic in as I can. Again, I honestly think that the z32 lights would have fit the rear of the s130 perfectly, had it not been for the odd curvature I didn't notice in the pictures. It was only after I had bought them and the body shop had already mounted them that my ideal image had been shattered. That's one thing that appeals to me with the z31 lights - the early z31 had a very similar design to the s130 rear, and I like the design of those lights a bit better.

  3. As some of you may recall, I had a bodyshop install some z32 tail lights on my s130. I wasn't real pleased with it at first, but figured I'd give it some time to grow on me. Well it's been around 8 months now, and I still don't really care for them. It's not a case of whether I like them or not, but more along the lines of some days they don't bug me as much as other days. And honestly, I think the tail lights would've worked out great had they been installed a little higher, and if the taillights were flat, because they're way too curvy to pull it off on a boxy s130 chassis.

Couple of blurry pics, but they show a distant view of the rear:

    DSC00011.jpg

    DSC00009.jpg

One closer to show you the odd curvature:

    DSC00008.jpg

And this one's a bit more from the side, but really highlights the curvature problem that I have with the setup:

    DSC00010.jpg

Originally (as in, before the z32 lights were installed) I was wanting to use some LED strips to mimic this type of setup:

    ferraritails.jpg

But I really couldn't find any strips that looked decent (as in, not wide enough, or cheap looking)

So, I'm looking for other ideas. Though I wouldn't mind round tail lights, the only ones I've seen on a 280zx were skyline lights, and I didn't really care for the way it turned out. I was trying to stick with taillights that had more of a streamline look to them to keep it consistant with the lines of the car. So far, the closest alternative I can think of is the early z31 tails with cleared bottom lenses, like these:

    z31tails.jpg

But once again, this is something I can *picture* working well, but have no clue how the reality of it will be. Same story with the z32 tails, I liked them when I chopped them on in mspaint, but then after sinking the dough into it and seeing it in reality, complete opposite. I tried to chop these on with paint (yeah, it was a quick, kinda crappy job):

    280z31tails.jpg

And yet again, have no clue if the dimensions / sizing is correct, so I don't know how it will look in real life. BUT, I'm fairly certain I don't have to worry about curvatue issues with these, they have the flat 80s look to them.

    Anyways, thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?

Any other ideas? Or does anyone have any pics or even know of the z31 tails being installed on an s130? I already wasted a bunch of money on the Z32s, so I'd like to get it right this time :)

  4. I'm undecided on this. I'm planning on installing my forged lq4 / f1 procharged setup soon, and was planning on having custom headers built using 1 7/8 primaries. I'm looking at making around 800-900rwhp, so I'm not sure how much 1 3/4 primaries will hinder my setup. I'll have to do some research on it, but if there will only be a negligible difference between the two primaries, I'll be in for the group buy. Then again, I've never driven a car with this much power, so even if it will rob me of 50 hp, who's to say I'm going to notice the difference between 850 and 900hp...I doubt I'll be at full throttle anyways. :)

And not to threadjack, but mxgsfmdpx, did that happen to be a convertible shelby?

  5. So after roughly 6 years, she finally has paint on her :) . Motivation? My brother turned 16 in May so I asked him if he wanted this car. 2 months after he said yes, here she is:

    DSC00299.jpg

    DSC00306.jpg

And it's a bit blurry, but here's the color without the sun shining on it:

    DSC00287.jpg

She still has buffing compound all over her and needs a good bath. I also have a set of swastikas and MSA II rear bumper to throw on, so more pics will come after she's been assembled, cleaned, and waxed. (I'll use something better than my cell camera next time) This was actually painted a different color than the 2003 sonic blue, I can't remember exactly what it was but it was a 2007 Ford blue that was very similar. It just had more pearl in it, which my brother preferred.

I'd still be working on it right now, but the freaking mosquitoes are horrible right now and seem to be immune to OFF. I'm about ready to buy a flamethrower.

  6. '82 - Saw the new paint job and remembered what it was like to drive that car 3 years ago, before the body shop got a hold of it

'72 - Drove it around Austin last night / early this morning...and I'm about to order a new crank angle sensor for it after I post this

'75 - Looked at gas tank / fuel cell options on it...tomorrow will be installing front coilovers and wilwood brakes

    Not today, but recently -

'76 - This weekend was able to cut and modify everything to get the 240 bumper / brackets installed

'77 - Just got it sprayed this last weekend, they should be sanding/buffing now and I hope to have it back sometime by the end of the week

'83 - Haven't seen it in 2 years and lost contact with the body guy, but hoping to track him down tomorrow (I think I found out where he works)

  7. Oh geez, I can't stand the "cute" comment. Granted, it could be worse, like "OMG what a POS" or something similar, but seriously, I didn't just spend hours upon hours of labor, not to mention thousands of dollars in body modifications, to have my car look "cute". Oh well. At least it's easier to get them in a "cute" car.

  8. Cool find - the z32 convertible is one of the few cars that I think can pull off the top down look. The only z32TT I drove had over 140K on the clock and was a bit ragged out, but didn't stop it from breaking the tires loose in 1-3 gears. I wanted to buy it until I popped the hood. Haha. A little too crowded for me...but that was literally the only thing that stopped me. Otherwise, it looked great, sounded great, and pulled respectable well for a mostly stock setup. Enjoy the ride

  9. Cool find...that's actually the first time I've seen a slant nose before. It's...different. Can't tell if I like it better than the original or not. I've always loved the 930 though. I was actually thinking about buying one a few years ago, but once I sat down in it, I got right back out. I felt like I was going to wreck it if I tried to drive it because I had NO legroom. I was a bit bummed out, but at least they're still pretty to look at :-)

  10. sweetride2go - Can you link any of the threads you're referring to? I searched Darius's posts but didn't find him mentioning much about the prochargers. However, I did find out that he's running an F1-R procharger, so good news, it fits! :)

Frank - Do you have any other info on the company that makes the crank support? I've looked into a gear drive for the procharger, but it was roughly $3k and I have a hard time justifying spending that kind of money on something that has been proven to work well with a belt and pulley. I haven't read about their one-way pulley, so that'll be one thing for me to look into.

  11. Darius had a procharger on his first setup http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3DlpSE1jsE . I'm not sure what he's running now, though. I plan on going the F1 route - I sold my maggie mp122 because I figured it'd be too much low-end torque for that little car. Looking at the setup in the video, it seems like there'd be plenty of room for the F1...but I'll find out first hand. One thing I've always been afraid of with the larger superchargers (especially with a massive cog setup as pictured above) is the extra sideload it puts on the front bearings of the crankshaft, not to mention probably extra stress on the crank itself.

  12. Apple is including a free "bumper" phone cover with the purchase of an iphone 4 to correct (or rather mask) the reception problem. And for those that already bought the cover, they'll refund the $30 or how ever much it was.

  13. If you're talking about using the factory metal body parts to do this conversion, I've seen one other Z (only pictures) of this done. It may have been a work in progress still, but for the most part it was complete. It seems like it'd be fairly easy to me. I contemplated doing this instead of messing with the fiberglass one-piece bonnet that I have. But anyways, I think you could just weld the gaps between the hood/fenders/headlight buckets, remove the bolts to the fenders and headlight buckets, and still be able to use the factory hood hinge. You will need to fabricate some side latches for the fenders, and may need to extend the wiring for the headlights, but other than that, it always seemed like an easy conversion to me.

Sorry I can't help you visually. I have a one-piece front bonnet, but it's the older fiberglass one that Arizona Z car used to have for sale. (No longer available)

  14. Drop dead sexy car, engine sounds addicting too, but damn dude, just be glad there wasn't a child on street or something from :25 - :38. A little too residential for me. She does accelerate smooth and effortless, though.

  15. I've had great experience through www.gpopshop.com . Though I don't think they sell wheels off the website, e-mail them and they may be able to help you out. Their customer service was quick and very helpful with me. If they can't sell you one, I would think they could at least point you in the right path for one, or give you whatever info you need to find the correct compressor wheel. Other than that, you don't have any local turbo rebuild shops?

As a side note, here's the kit I'm looking at buying:

    http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/parts-classifieds/1282511-complete-f1-procharger-kit.html

I don't have any experience with procharged setups, so I was wondering what your opinion of this kit is? If anything looks suspicious about it, or maybe that tensioner setup is prone to failure (I don't know - I didn't find much info on it). I think $6k is a bit too much, and $4500 should be a better ballpark. I don't wanna go higher than $5k.

Another thing that gets me is why almost every procharged kit I see for sale, barely has a thousand miles on it. Most are 400-800 miles or something like that. These are off street/strip cars. That always bugged me...gives me the impression that they're problematic, but most people seem to be happy with them.
