  1. Back to the phantom grip, I heard they aren't very smooth but value for the price they can't be beat, 3 or 4 people told me they were more than happy with the results. Personnaly tho I know next to nothing about them apart from their site and a few magazine articles.

    Elusive Euro sound

My dad had an austin healey with a mk 4 jag engine, 3.5 i6. He went through a few exhaust systems over the years I think he used a few different domestic brands but it always had that "euro" sound, its was GREAT but it does depend so much on the engine. Your best bet is to hit a major car show and grab an actual muffler off a european car, my dad is into building classic british cars and thats how he gets all his stuff. Still I have never heard a bad sounding Z.
  3. 95-mazda mx6, KLZE swap, bit of mods 89 Jeep Cherokee, it just won't die!!!
  4. Great posts, thanks I am going to spend some time researching a 305 buildup. Given its a free motor it might make sense to just go with building this up. My eventual target is 300rwp, there are no local strips here or anything to push me beyond that. That should be easily attainable with a worked over 305.
  5. Thanks alot, I think I am going to keep it stock for now, you are right, 305's don't have the best aftermarket support from what I can tell, I will just put the money into something else. Even stock it will should a bit fun for a year or 2.
  6. The thing is I will eventually go fuel injected probably lt-1 but I am just looking for a stock motor swap right now and will concentrate on the rest of the car before I add more power. Given I got this motor for free I am wondering what kind of power I can get if I put about 1k into it. Again, what gains could I expect with a carb/intake/cam/exhaust upgrade. Anyone have a proven recipe? If its not going to yield much I will leave it alone for know, its just that its sitting here ready to be worked on is all.
  7. Well I just sold the hot v8 I had at a huge profit and am about ready to go find my z-car. For anyone following my project I am about to find a good condition z and have it shipped up to canada. Now my plan is to focus on body and suspension/brakes and just do a stock v8 swap and let the power progress once I have everything else settled. I have a lsd r200, brake kit already and now I am already looking for a plane jane sbc to last for a few years. My buddy is willing to give me a FREE 1985-L69 supposedly having about 6k on it after a rebuild, its complete minus starter. I figure I could pick up a nice cheap t-5 and have a solid drivetrain for under 1k all said and done. What I am wondering is if I decided to say dump a modest 1k or so into hopping it up a bit is it worth it? I am going to pick it up in the morning and give it a good once over. Stock specs are 190hp and 240trq. Given that I will just replace it in a few years and it should make a fine daily driver motor as is , is it even worth trying to squeeze some more power out of this thing. Looking at all its specifications I am less than inspired about squeezing easy performace with out disposing of the top end. You think I could 250hp with stock heads and just a intake/carb/cam/exhaust upgrade? Opinions?
  8. You can always do what my dad did, tell him to start saving and buy his own car!
  9. Man, not once have I read one of your posts that was not amazingly valuable. Keep em coming!
  10. No offence intended but if you have to ask a basic question like what parts are needed then I would not adivse dumping money into something like this unless you either have enough money to pay people to do it, have ten years to finish the swap, or have a friends with enough knowledge to get you through it. I see so many people lose thousands on something like this, documented or not you need some big time mechanic and fabrication skills for a swap like this. IMHO This is not at all directed at you but just in general I went over to look at a guy who is selling a hot v8 crate motor, he was trying to build a car in his garage, (had basically nothing done, just spent about 8k on the motor and then decided to sell it all) I was asking him about his project and why he is bailing out, he said it was just to hard, I was looking around his garage and just mentioned where he kept his tools, he pointed at this little chest of tools, this guy put all this money into buying a car and motor and he had nothing more than basic handtools. Where do these people come from???
  11. Don't forget you have to line up the tranny too, see what kind of play u have there first
  12. OBD = Onboard Diagnostics, OBDI is just a simpler system, OBDII is very similar just a bit more complex with aditional sensors and software. Due to it's more complex nature aftermarket programming for OBDII is more expensive.
  13. By saying you just got the welder I assume then that you are a novice welder like myself. My only advice is to leave the exhaust work until you have some experience in general and with your particular machine. its not hard to make mistakes with thin metal. And fun, its a blast when you first get it!
  14. I now nothing of turbo's so I have never answered your posts, but I have read just about all of them, I am sorry it's come to this after all u have been thru, the only thing I don't understand is why you just don't go back to a nice simple NA setup, you have all that money in the car, why get rid of the whole thing? Just sell the IC and turbo setup and u should be able to pick up a nice l-28 carbed setup. Then at least u won't lose on your clutch and suspension setup.
  15. Being flat fours, subaru engines are always mounted VERY low in the car and as far back as possible. Are you even sure you physically fit an LT1 in there? Of the models I have seen there doesn't apear to be all that much room. If you conver the car to RWD I have a feeling it will be very unbalanced. You are better off just sticking a turbo on it.
  16. I have spent ~4hrs with a s2000, while the car handles great and is fun I was not impressed with the drivetrain, it screams but the power band is just too small to be practical for a street car. I am sure it could be made to fit tho if u really wanted to go that route. IMO it would be a poor motor to choose. My friend was chasing me in his 71 mustang and I had to run around town in 1st/2nd in order to keep the revs high enough to have fun. Downshifting to 1st gets old quick.

We have a beautiful 24,000 mile LT1/6 speed package just finishing up. It runs like new. John Speartech Fuel Injection Systems, Inc. http://www.speartech.com
  18. You need to post more information, first of all what is your goal, if you have 400hp in your Z I assume you are more street/drag oriented then autocross/road racing. Must the tires fit in the stock wells? Fitting 17 inch wheels in a z requires some hefty suspension work, figure out what will fit, then decide on a rim, then figure out how long your tire must last you, then simply buy the most aggresive tire that will meet your specs if grip is your only concern.
  19. I wholeheartedly agree with one point to add. There is a line in the JTR, 7th edition that reads something to the effect of "don't get carried away with ''building'' an engine when all you really want to do is an engine swap". I am a few months away from my long awaited trip to the southern USA to get my Z but I have been planning my swap for about 2 years now. So far I have a LSD, a freshly rebuilt, barely over stock 327 SBC and a tranny and new clutch. I've been careful in waiting for deals and have all the above for 3k canadian mostly by finding people down on their luck (engine). The point to all this is if you are someone like me who does not live near a track or drive on the freeway a somewhat stock smallblock engine will give you all the performace in a Z you will USE and won't cost you all that much. I am going to pay a small fortune for the car because I want something in very good shape but my actual swap cost I assume to be about 6k. To me there are too many people trying to build show cars. All I want is a fast car that is mechanically sound and looks decent from 10 feet away. I am not sure why the vast majority can't be satisfied with that. I am starting small and when money and desire is there my Z will progress from there. I think people need start settings some realistic goals.
  20. I threw it up on a ftp server from work, its one mean rx7. I love Mazdas! http://student.lssu.edu/~ujones/4rotorfd.mpg
  21. http://student.lssu.edu/~ujones/jmortensenwithmusic.wmv Here is a mirror for your video.
  22. Very good point, cost of living is the real determining factor of wealth.
  23. The only problem I see with that is that cops would begine targetting rich people. Think about it, one cop could rack up a million in fines for the government with under 10 tickets!
  24. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=15&u=/ap/20040210/ap_on_fe_st/finland_speeding_fine All I can say is wow, I would blow a gasket.
  25. I can host it, I will pm when I get off work with the ftp info. Not a fast server but it usuall gives about 50-100k dl speeds.
