  1. I was running an n/a oil pump out of a 260z motor with the comp springs and the oil pressure was a good 10-15psi lower than the turbo/automatic with stock spring pressure. So that tells you how much more the turbo oil pump flows. Plus my top-end feels stronger (hydraulic lifters), and my turbo spools a tad quicker. My oil pressure b4 was 38psi at full throttle and now it is 55psi.

  2. Wow looks good. In my n/a 280zx I got around the same but that was with better aerodynamics, and less mods. Btw I have a gps that can tell you exactly how fast and how far you traveled. So next time you come up and we remember:icon10: we can test it.

  3. I just went through this same drill with my 3.0 with a P90A head. I finally have a solid cam in it and solid adjusters. This is the 4th cam I have had in this new engine. I gave up on the hydraulics. I converted to solids. 4 cams in 156 miles! Not bad, right?

Sounds like me with oil pumps and turbos.:trippen:

Did you get adapters machined or did you install a p90 solid head? If you got adapters machined how much did it cost. Thanks

  4. Hey mike just had an idea. It might be the fuel injectors. Remember when we had two stuck injectors and then we loosened the hold downs and they started to work. Well I would loosen all the hold downs and lightly tigheten them. Then hook up your wideband and make sure it isn't running lean. Damn umm just remember I never saw your a/f ratios go lean when you had this problem so that might not be the problem but its still worth a try only 5 minutes to do.

  5. Well I drove the car around for about half an hour and by 3500-4000rpms the pressure would be at 70-80psi. I never took it above that. So I swapped in the stock oil pump spring and all is good. By 3000rpms 50psi by 3500rpms 56psi and it stays there intill redline. I am sure that after a week of driving both the oil pump and oil will lower the pressure. I am running 10w-30 mobil 1 and its 80+ plus here so that was not an issue.

  6. Ok I installed a new turbo/automatic oil pump into my z. I also have the competition inner and outer springs in it. The oil pressure while cold or even after sitting in my driveway awhile will go up past 80psi. I stop the rpms when it goes this high. I am about to take a slow drive and see if after a few miles the oil gets thinner and oil drops.

I was wondering what would be TOO high for oil pressure? I know too much is bad for seals so my guess would be 55psi max. Thanks.

  7. Well I moved my cam two teeth forward and two teeth back and compression got worse and then alittle better still not good. So I put the cam back the way I had it and installed my stock cam and bingo it worked perfectly. So... My theory is that the cam with higher lift is overpowering my hydraulic lifters at low rpm/low oil pressure. Then when i rev it oil pressure goes up and then they work normal. So basically my hydraulic lifters cannot handle the higher lift of the A cam out of 75' 280z. Well there went 6 hrs of my life:icon51:

  8. Ok I just swapped out an oil pump and a n/a cam into my z. The cam was off of a n42 head so I had to convert to external oiling. The car will not idle. But it will rev fine. I can hold the the throttle open and keep it running at 2000-2500rpms. If I let it go down to idle the vacuum will be around 5-0 mmHg. At higher idle 15mmHG. Upon deceleration 20+. The distributor timing is correct. The mark in the cam gear lines up perfectly with the mark on the cam tower. I am in the no.1 position. Both of the no.1 cylinder cam lobes are facing up. And are opposite each other. Maybe just maybe I am off one tooth but from what I can see I don't think so. Any suggestions please help? I knew I shouldn't have touched the car it was running so good.:cry2:

  9. Leaving for Florida this weekend coming up.

HIP! HIP! HOORAY!!! Nah i'm just messing with you mike. Sucks to see you leave. Especially since we finally have all three turbo z's running. But you gotta take what life throws at ya. I hope your mom' date=' pop, and grandma get well soon. I sure will miss all of us going out prowling the streets. You have fun in the sun and get laid in the shade down in Florida. I know you said you would be back but when do you think it will be? Hopefully by then i'll be able to return the head gasket I stole from you:mrgreen: [/size']

  10. good to hear somebody's running a 240z 4 speed, thats the setup i would like to be running. but i am kinda back and forth because of the larger clutch size of the 280 5 speed.

Yeah I am running the turbo flywheel and clutch. With the stock 4spd. I had a choice of either running a fidanza 225 clutch and dual centerforce clutch or stock turbo and unknown clutch. The unknown clutch seems to holding for now.:flamedevi

  11. You had to do some internal work to run 19psi right? just wondering

Nope just a 1mm hks metal head gasket that I stole from ON3GO. You can run up to 22psi on the stock block as long as you have no detonation at all. At that boost level though any detonation will break something. Since i'm running a more effiecient turbo then most I will only be taking it to 20psi.

  12. I will be getting a zx 5-spd this week and putting it in my car so I decided to tune for higher boost with my current 4spd. I tuned it for 19psi which should be roughly 350hp-400lb-tq. I have done multiple drag launches and 3rd and 4th gear pulls and it works perfectly. I even spanked a 05' 911 turbo:flamedevi Only thing is its hard to get into 3rd and 4th gear but it did this when I ran 7psi so it might just be a bad tranny to start with. So if anybody wants to know the 240z 4spd can handle some power. Not to sure for how long it will hold but it did for two nights straight.

  13. Am I missing something or are all you guys not controlling timing at all below atmospheric pressure? What is you idle timing?

Anyway' date=' you have way too much advance. Plus, your pressure scale is too wide, so you are not getting all the adustability you could. How much boost do you plan on running? Set the max kPa value to that number. 240kPa = 35psi. You will never run that much boost so that part of the map is not being used. [/quote']

    240kpa is 35psi. but minus 1 atm 14.7psi = 20.3 psi and 99kpa is 1 atm.

We have the car not pinging anymore. Timing is very conservative and so is fuel but its all good. He might post up the timing map. I think I will give it another 1 degree at certain areas to get it more power but I just wanted to tune it so it doesn't ping anymore. Now he has a slight miss we need to find. We will try a lower spark plug gap.

  14. Bad tank of gas maybe?

I noticed a difference in where I purchased my 93 octane. Chevron was great and I didn't have any issues' date=' 7-11, citgo, marathon, not so much. I notice even in my high compression daily driver 240z, I have to run a quality 93 octane (like Chevron) where a lesser quality 93 fuel gives me the pings.

You could try adding 2-3 gallons of race fuel to the mix (not the octane booster crap), just to see if it makes a difference, if it does, then you'll just have to back out some more timing if you want to run those boost levels on pump...[/quote']

Nah its timing I have his timing set at the same as mine but his car has higher compression. All I need to do is pull timing from 7psi and up he should be good to go. 5 minutes worth of work but noooo somebody forgot his labtop last night so i'll do it today.

  15. First things first. My car was not at 12psi it was at 5-6psi when we raced. Second I can not find 3rd even if it was lite up with neon lights. Damn 4spd sychros are gone. Third I never used my 2-step against you only to scare people next to my muffler (it back fires alittle with a 1ft flame) Intill I miss third 73turbo240z and I are both even so think of it as you will. So when I get my better tranny this week we will line up again see who is king of h-town z-streets.:flamedevi What ever psi you want.:burnout:

OH YEAH I turned the turbo wick up to 19psi for the fun of it last night. And second gear traction is a joke I just roast the tires. Third it still spins but its managable. Its more of an accereration spin in third. And fourth doesn't last too long. Here is the funny part I have a 240z 4spd and it handled all of this plus 10+ launches last night. I love this car I just need a better tranny and speedo.

  16. You can check the timing with a timing light. Basically it senses when the no.1 cylinder is fired and emits a light at that time. You then check where the mark on the crank pulley is lined up at when the light comes on. If you are running the stock ecu 81-82 then its 20 degrees if you are running a 83 then its 24. It could also be a miss. Check cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs, and coil.

EDIT* I just read your sig looks like you are running an l20 and I don't know what the stock timing is on that. And yes dizzy timing and ignition timing is the same.

  17. Smoking after you first put the engine together is normal. Your finger oil, cleaner, and even gaskets will smoke for the first few times your car is warmed up. It should get better each time you start it though. If you are getting a good boost reading and its going up there as quickly as should then you system is sealed. So more than likely its ignition timing, miss, or fuel problem.

  18. Yeah 73turbo240z was working on his starts. Different tranny, new stickier tires, and a new better clutch. And this was his second attempt to try. The next run he did a better launch still not perfect and got him out of the hole by 1/2 car length instead of the other way around. So once 73turbo240z gets his new setup down nothing should be able to beat him off the line street tire vs street tire. Unless its 4wd.

  19. Yeah I was video taping the run and didn't know I was so close to the wall so when I turned to video the 2nd half I smacked my head:fmad: A few more things to note on3go's car has about 200miles on it. Both cars were stripped, and both were running on the same exact tires 225 bfgoodrich sports. One more thing about 73turbo240z is he isn't sure he didn't go past 7 psi because his boost gauge is not easily seen while driving so he might have "cheated" and the boost went higher. GET THAT FIXED But they both sounded nice from where I was. This tuesday my z should be running and if the tranny holds we should see three z's line up against each other.

  20. Its been running for awhile. It has 4 piston skirts broken off the pistons. I dropped the oil pan and cleaned it out and took a look at everything else about 6 months ago. On some of the parts its look like the two parts of the oil pump were rubbing against each other, and not metal flakes scrapeing. They have matching scratch marks. I think I might drop the oil pan again and check if there are alot of shavings down there and while i'm there i'll check the pickup tube. Also I will do an engine flush see what that does. If it eats another oil pump I might pull the engine and tear it down.

  21. Is this a fresh rebuild or a old engine?

Old engine' date=' maybe worn bearings with to much clearance???

    [/quote']

Junkyard motor but the oil problem is constant. With the car cold it doesnt go up as much as it use too. And just slightly warm the pressure is way lower than it usually is hot. So I don't think its just temperature.

I am running synthetic 10w30 mobil 1. Its 50 degrees out. And I don't think thicker oil will help that much because I have found scaring on the oil pump itself.
