The other day I got a chance to run the car on a dyno, here are the results: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=145297 HB280ZT

cygnusx1, The car started this after I replaced the BOV about 2 years ago. I went from a 1st Gen BOV to a Tial 50 mm BOV. So how could a BOV cause this? Or maybe it just masked the real problem. As for the turbo it is not that large compared to some of the large turbos others are using so?? Also I have talked with several Turbo specialist and they tell me it is a tuning issue and not the turbo. I really hate it when I have many more questions then answers but that is the way of it. Hi All, Well they got the upload function working again, thanks SuperDan! If you look at datalog 1639D6 and msq 1640D5 you can see the issue I had in the following time periods: -1702.901 MAP 179 Boost 11.4 PW 14.5 Duty Cycle 38.7 -1702.997 MAP 164 Boost 9.2 PW 12.1 Duty Cycle 33.3 -1703.733 MAP 147 Boost 6.8 PW 12.2 Duty Cycle 35.6 If you look at datalog 1646D7 and msq 1645D6 you can see the issue I had in the following time periods: -2108.265 MAP 185 Boost 12.3 PW 14.0 Duty Cycle 39.7 -2108.553 MAP 147 Boost 6.8 PW 12.0 Duty Cycle 33.0 I am really not sure why I get this miss/flutter/stumble between 3200 and 4000 rpms when doing the 4th gear pulls. So if anyone has any ideas please let me know. HB280ZT datalog1639D6.zip datalog1646D7.zip megasquirt1640D5.zip megasquirt1645D6.zip

SuperDan, Well I tried to upload zip files to thread and I got a error "upload of files failed", or something like that. Thanks HB280ZT

Hi All, Well I had some issues during the dyno pulls. My car has a miss/flutter/stumble between 3200 and 4000 rpms when doing the 4th gear pulls on the dyno, 3rd gear pulls no issue (very fast respones compared to the 4th gear pulls). In the datalogs (which I hope to post when the system is up and running again) at full throttle I get a dip in MAP, Boost, PW and Duty cycle. Not sure what is causing it but it is very frustrating. I mean, I get a dip in MAP from 179 to 147 in a log period of 1702.901 to 1703.733 with a drop in boost of 11.4 to 6.8 in the same period, plus PW and DC drop also. However my VE and TP numbers stay the same. So what could cause these type of changes and what should I look at in the datalog to help pin point the problem. Thanks for the help will post logs and msq when I can. HB280ZT

I am also having the same problem and my account says I may post attachments. So any ideas what is causing this? HB280ZT

Hi All, I had a chance to dyno my car today and was surprised the car did not run as good as I had hoped or as good as it had in the past. Here are the numbers and some of the datalogs and msqs. Run 5 of 8 Max power 281.28 at 4800 rpms Max torque 303.15 at 4200 rpms Here is some background infomation about my setup: 1977 Datsun 280Z Turbo MS 1 V3 with 29y4 Extra code 82 ZX turbo motor with N42 head using turbo cam T3/TO4 - running 14 psi boost Turbine wheel is a stage III. A/R .70 Compressor wheel is a T04B hi-fi A/R .63 and it flows 55lbs/min intercooler tubing 2 1/4 - bar and plate with a fin area measures 3" wide X 8" tall X 20" long- Tial BOV is mounted 12" before the TB. Spark plugs NGK BKR7E gapped to .025 60mm TB For some reason I am not able to post datalogs and msq's in zip format. Any ideas why? HB280ZT

Matt, Well I made the changes and it helped some but still not right. Here is a very short datalog and my last msq. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT datalog200902252150.zip megasquirt200902252230.zip

Well I guess I will just have to try something and see if I can get it to work. The one I am interested in trying first is oil pressure. So does anyone know how our stock oil pressure sending unit works, ie volts or resistance? Also will easytherm work for an pressure? HB280ZT
-
So the million dollar question has anyone added another gauge to MS. Such as oil pressure, oil temperture, fuel pressure, etc? I came across this in the MSnS-Extra Tuning and Datalogging manual: http://www.msextra.com/manuals/MS_Extra_Datalog_Manual.htm#addgauge Look in the adding another gauge sub section. If you have added a gauge what was it and how has it worked for you? Also would it work with the factory Datsun Oil pressure sending unit? HB280ZT

While reading the MS extra manual I came across this statement: "You can also turn just the Decel off in either mode when in Boost, this is to prevent the ECU cutting fuel down (using the Decel) by you simply easing off the accelerator a little when in boost." The reason I mention this is because I noticed that my Decel light comes on when the PW and Duty cycle spike. So that being said when in boost is when I have this problem so back to the statement. How do I turn out Decel when in boost? HB280ZT

Matt, Thanks, will give it a try! I am running MAP-Based and here is my table: 3.0m/s 250kPa/s 2.5m/s 150kPa/s 1.5m/s 100kPa/s 0.5m/s 50kPa/s I will bump them up a little to see what happens. Thanks Harry aka HB280ZT

Matt, In my acceleration wizard window I am running a 30kPa/s MAPdot Threshold and a .977v/s TPSdot Threshold. So you are telling me to up these numbers to compensate for the change in PW and duty cycle, is that correct? Also when I look at the datalog (in excel) I am seeing the following chages at or around time of 324: 324.204 PW 7.1 DutyCycle 19.5 324.332 PW 5.2 DutyCycle 14.3 324.588 PW 6.9 DutyCycle 19.0 324.971 PW 6.8 DutyCycle 19.3 325.099 PW 4.9 DutyCycle 13.9 325.354 PW 6.1 DutyCycle 17.8 325.482 PW 4.8 DutyCycle 13.6 The reason that I am looking at this as a possible problem is because I am chasing a flutter issue in my car under part boost and everyone that I talk to at several different turbo places (all the big turbo distributors) say my problem is tuning related. Also at this time the car was fluttering when I logged this datalog. So am I chasing my tail or what?????????????? I have been working this problem going on several years now with no solution. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT

Hi All, Well I am chasing down an issue with PW and duty cycle spiking up and down with the TP being constant, this happens at rpms above 3500. Not sure how to explain it better then that so here is a datalog that shows it towards the end of the log. Look around the 324 time period. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT datalog200902221012.zip

Well all I finally have the duct work figured out and brackets made. Here is how it all looks at full droop: I have run the suspension and steering through its full range of motion and the ducts do not touch the tires. Hopefully someday in the near future I will get a chance to see how it all works at the track. But for now I will just have to play with it on the street. I hope this helps someone else. HB280ZT

I will be running 2" silicone duct. I plan to run it along the contour of the wheel well. So it would be attached close to the headlight bucket then along the side and top of the wheel well then down along the side of the strut tower. That way I will keep the hose away from the tire and make it move easy when you turn the wheel from lock to lock. I will post some pictures then I get this part done, hopefully in the next week or so. HB280ZT

Well all I found some wire mesh that I liked so I did a bit of fabrication and this is what I came up with. What do you think? Yea it is sitting on my roof, it was the only place I could put it to take a nice picture of my handy work. Also for those who wondered what was behind a MSA type 3 airdam. Well here is what I have behind mine! I like something other then fiberglass protecting the frontend of my Z. Hope this helps someone out in the long run and maybe someday I will get a chance to see how it works on the track. HB280ZT
-
I will see what I can find locally. I am thinking that I can form the wire mesh from the back of the airdam and then pop rivit it into the cup. That way you see the back of the brake duct cup and just a wire screen. Then when it is time I can get the cups powder coated and just change out the mesh as needed. John thanks for the help it took me a bit to picture something that would work. Will post some pictures when I get this worked out and something fabbed up. Oh yea if you were wondering where I got the cups that I used for the back of the airdam I got them at WalMart. They started off life as metal light buckets for a 3 light stand. Cost about $12 and I got 3 buckets, 2 on the car and 1 spare! HB280ZT
-
John, Do you have any pictures? HB280ZT
-
I was also thinking mesh of some type but where to put it and where to get it? Also how to mount it to make it look nice. I really do not want to put something out on the front of the airdam so? HB280ZT
-
Hi All, Well I have been working on my brake ducts for a bit now and have most of the parts made here are a few pitures: Not pictured is the 2 inch Aircraft quality metal reinforced silicone duct I will use to connect the input at the airdam to the brake backing plate. Now I just need to figure out how to add some type of screen to catch the stuff that should not be in the brakes. So does anyone have any ideas? I am working with a MSA Type 3 airdam and I want this to look as clean as posible. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT

I have there jack stands and have had no problem with them at all. Used them on the Z and on other much heavier car/trucks without any problems. I also have a set of there car dollies, engine dollies and they work great for the price. I have also used many of there other tools and I approach it this way. If it is something that I plan on using everyday then I will purchase a quality tool. However if it is something that I use once in a while then I will try the HF tool. So far have only had 1 problem with there tools and it was a small die grinder and it did not work. Sandblaster booth and parts cleaner both were great. I did customize them a bit but other then that no problems. HB280ZT

Coilover street suspension setup springrates?
HB280ZT replied to Spooler's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Just so you know the stock springs on the 280Z are 107 lbs front and 127 lbs in the rear, if my memory is still all there, who knows now a days. So that being said what are your current spring rates? From there we maybe able to give you a bit more advice. Me personally I run 225 lbs front and 250 lbs rear coilovers on my 1977 on the street and the track when I get a chance. HB280ZT
