Bought my Canton Oil Pan Today!!!
Mikelly replied to Mikelly's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Curtis, Check out this link... http://poske.com/parts/Canton/index.htm#PANS I had a friend of mine (Who sells them for MUCH MORE) pull the RR pan and the circle track pan and check them both out, and there is 1/2 inch more clearance and a wider "T" on the RR pan, and that is about it. The circle track pan is set up to distribute the oil slightly different, but my source said that it wasn't negligable. Guy has a 911 Carrera and knows a few things about going left and right in the turns and he was impressed with both pans and told me to go for the one I bought for his price (Which was $329).... I went to the link above and bought it there! Mike -
Bought my Canton Oil Pan Today!!!
Mikelly replied to Mikelly's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Pete, The pan was $219, but the pickup and dipstick kit raises the price up to the $275 total. That's OK by me since one for a Ford small block is $429 for all three pieces... I've got the Canton oil filter, fuel filter and Accusump. I'm a B-I-G fan of CANTON products, and the added insurance and peace of mind was worth it! Mike Kelly -
1st off let me say that the Arizona Zcar suspension parts are BOMB PROOF Chromoly steel units and they are well engineered. The ONLY complaint anyone has ever had about them is that they are a PITA to setup on a machine or at the track. You must unbolt each heim joint pickup point to adjust it for alignment, which can take some serious time and money (On an alignment rack or in the pits). If you already have them, my advice is to keep them. If you don't, then look at other alternatives! Mike Kelly

Damned good explanation of Redline... OK Grumpy, what is on the agenda next class session... You should teach this stuff! Good Job! Mike Kelly

7 inch deep pan, 6 trap doors, windage tray, scrapers, 7 quarts, temp sensor plug, pickup for the oilpump, and the dipstiock Kit....$275 plus shipping.... Sweet! I should also have my NEW rods by Monday of next week... The TOOL on Ebay lost mine so I bought some others... Forged Hbeams with 7/16 cap screws, floaters, supposedly made by SCAT! $290!! Mike Kelly

I posted to you other thread, and basically saoid what Mike Gibson said here. We could both save you some serious money. Also, my heim joint design doesn't add any more harshness than adding stiff urethane bushings. Contact us! Mike Kelly

FYI, Mike Gibson and I can put together a suspension package that will be a better solution for you at a better price. If you live in Phoenix, you would have the ability to deal directly with Dave, as I've been told his phone maners are lacking and personal services are much better in person. I've spoken with Dave and I understand why he comes off as less than friendly after years of having people ask him tons of rediculous questions and never spending a dime on his products. If you are interested in my offer (With Mike Gibson) to put a package together for you, just send me an e-mail offline. Mike can provide the brakes, coilovers, and struts, and I can provide the adjustable control arms, which are a much better design and ON CAR adjustable. Check out my how-to article in the lates Sport Z Magazine! Mike Kelly

HELP! - Limited Slip Differential Specs?
Mikelly replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Yuichi would be correct... The 87-89 300ZX turbo NON-Anniversary edition (All white with White wheels) cars came with 3.7 Clutch type LSD rears... I have one, but it isn't for sale at the moment. FYI, I paid $400 for mine when I bought it in 1993. They are VERY hard to find. Mike Kelly -
HELP!!! To buy or not to buy... How much?
Mikelly replied to ToplessZ's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
If the flares are done properly and the convertible conversion was done right, JUMP ON IT! Get lots of pics, and if you can, Take a trip out to see the car. Airfare into LA is going for $220 right now on Hotwire.com! I'd fly out and take a look at the car, then make your decision. Mike Kelly -
Do a search in the Chevy Forum. S&S headers makes a set that will fit. Research the forum though, as they were originally desinged to fit a 32 Ford (I think...) and S&S will supposedly make mods to fit your needs. I'll be going that route if I can't round up some 1 7/8 units.. Mike

350HP for under $1K?? We shall see?
Mikelly replied to utvolman99's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Deals are out there... Find the unlucky shmuck who is A: Going through a divorce, or B: Going to jail, and take him up on his need to liquidate items. Is this evil?? No. Is it opportunistic? YES. Is that bad??? No, as long as you aren't the shmuck going to jail or getting divorced. Deals are out there... 350HP for $1000 is possibly, but it won't be easy... M ike -
Good man... Now break out the yellow pages and start talking tyo muffler shops and hot rodders to find out who in your area does Quality exhaust fabrication. They will likely want to keep the car for the day, since it will be a time consuming job if they haven't seent he underside of a Zcar before! Mike Kelly

...Well that is the unfortunate circumstance here... He IS still in business! At least for the near term! Mike Kelly

I'd go ahead and buy the JTR mounts since you specify NO Scarab position. I'd also be looking at headers, exhaust, and getting the drive shaft made once you have the exact length you are shooting for. The exhaust is a BIG ticket item if you go duals. This will have to be a custom job by a competent exhaust shop... Do a search in each of the respective forums for Ignition, fuel, and cooling problems and solutions! Mike Kelly ZF Racing LLC

Rear Control Arm Update....

John, Ya got me! I have TOE Adjustment...Hows that? MIKE -
...Not sure I like being compared to the tools on the fast and the furious, but I'll bite on the "Spending so much money on a car" spin. I make in excess of 6 figures (Just got a raise!!!). I'm 35 years old, have limited college education, and I work for a defense contractor by day and build Zcar parts by night. I don't own a lavish home, it was recently "RE-appraised" for $165,000 and I don't own new cars or fancy clothes. My mortgage is $1000 a month. I bust my ass and have been given some VERY fortunate breaks over the years. However, LONG before (5 years) I was fortunate enough to get a job with my current company, I was a poor government employee making $35,000 per year, living in one of the most expensive economies in the country (Washington DC). I had Zs then and raced them regularly. How do you afford it??? You shop, get deals, horse trade, and learn to do a lot yourself. Now, everyone here that has known me for a while knows that I shop my ass off, and I ONLY purchase deals. Go back and read what I make up above, and then do a search in this forum where I was whinning about paying for Rods and Pistons... Bottom line is to build what you can afford, and then shop your ass off when you can't afford it. I can afford to buy a viper, but I choose to build a V8 Z. One thing I have learned is NOT to get overboard in debt over your project... It isn't worth 21.9% interest rates and rediculous monthly payments on revolving credit debt... I've been there, as have others! I'm not trying to rub my income or good fortune in the faces of others... I was born and raised in a trailer, the same trailer my parents STILL live in to this day. I hope I didn't offend anyone with my statements. Mike Kelly

I don't care who you are, or how much you spend.... If someone misrepresents their product or service, that is criminal. Sure, the customer should have known better. But the vendor, or service representative bears the ownership of the responsibility here. I personally know nothing about Hennessy, but him getting onto these bulliten boards and jousting with people, arranging illegal street races to prove his car is the baddest, and getting into brawls with people in public places is just plain BAD. This guy has a MULTI-million dollar "POTENTIAL" business that he has screwed into the ground. If he were a smart guy (And he isn't just based on the bad press he gets), John would have kept a low profile, kept his business managable, and made promises he could keep. The fact that he is doing all of the above (And this is purely hearsay) tells you that this character is someone NOT to do business with. Forwhat its worth, this is EXACTLY why I learned to do ALL my work on the Z myself. I got screwed twice in 6 months (More in time than money) and just said to myself "Self You are a Smart man who makes a serious living in computers, and you are smarter than these pinheads working on your car... Do it yourself, and do it right!" John C., your comments about the magazines is SPOT ON! They struggle to get copy every issue to fill their space. Monthly periodicals will do whatever they can to fill their pages. Mike Kelly

Rear Control Arm Update....
Mikelly replied to Mikelly's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Chris, My adjustable control arms are for sale and yes, the rears come with toe out adjustment. You can view them at: http://photos.yahoo.com/dat74z2001 Click on "My Photo Album" at the left and look at the pics! Contact me offline for pricing. Mike Kelly -
Yup, Scottie has a GOOOOD point. Reason my car has been off the road for 18 months. Make sure you are prepping the chassis and brakes/ suspension to handle that much HP. We often lose sight of the fact that these cars were designed to handle 160+ HP. My car was scary fast with a poorly tuned 383 stroker with flexy floor pans and small headers. With the proper setup and proper tuning it should prove to REALY get my attention. Make sure you address the important stuff! Mike Kelly

I think you should get some of my adjustable TC Rods to give you some added positive caster for those 1320 runs! Also Energy Suspension makes a complete KIT for Zcars. It isn't cheap, but probably as good as it gets. Mike Kelly ZF Racing LLC

Calling all Mechanics or those mechanically inclined...
Mikelly replied to Mikelly's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
This thing is a dead on KNock and I put it on a lift with it running to try and figure if it was coming from the top or bottom of the motor and it sounded like it was from all over... Which may be the reason if the flex plate is cracked... I'll check and see if the flex plate is cracked... If that is the case, I'll be replacing the flex plate and driving the thing daily until we get all the Ford Swap parts together... I HOPE it is the flex plate... $200 for the car, that would be TO FUNNY! Mike -

I have a brain teaser for you guys... 1989 240SX has a nocking in it at idle... I put it in gear (Automatic) and drive down my brother inlaws driveway (1/3rd of a mile long) and at certain RPMs the knocking goes away all together. Any idea what this could be??? We are going to pull the motor and trans over the next few weeks just to take measurements, as I'm gonna stuff a 5.0 mustang motor in it, but I'm curious as hell why it isn't knocking consistantly through the rev range... Mike Kelly -
Can someone pull some measurements off their project motor for me??? I need to know how tall the motor is from the Pan to the top of the Upper Intake, and how wide it is from side to side, then front of crank pully to back of block! Need these for the 240SX project I have... Thanks in advance! Mike

I cannot stress enough how much BETTER mig welding with gas (75/25 Argon) is. Flux Core welders are OK for light duty sheetmetal work, but most people I know use a good gas mix for a proper burn and good penetration control. I use a Lincoln SP125 that I bought new for $500. It had NO bottle with it and that cost me an additional $115 filled with my gas preference. A couple of other companies make this same TYPE welder with the same features (Hobart is one) for less, around $375-425 through Northern Tools. My recommendation is to save up your money until you can do it right! Mike
