  1. Like everyone says, read the JTR book at least 100 times-I'm near done but still reading it! Also, read the magazines in the stores, other people are doing swaps into other cars and seeing what they did can be a big help. You don't have to copy them exactly but at least you will get some ideas. Just make sure you know what you want and make sure they are compatible with the other parts you want. No of flywheel teeth, 1 0r 2 piece rear main seals, starter size, headers, heads, etc. I got the Painless Wiring harness, 18 circuit, from Summit for close to 1/2 PW's list price. See my links page on others who have done swaps. http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html Good luck, Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  2. What's a RO-Z? A rotary? Some I met on the net a couple of years ago was thinking about putting in a 20B with twin turbos, cant remember who he was so can't say if he did it or not. Wouldn't there be no torque at all though? Have you guys seen the kits for swapping V8s into the RX&s? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  3. How do I know if my shocks are blown? They are out and a friend told me to check for oil in the strut tube. However, the Haynes or Chilton or someone on Zcar.com said to add oil to the strut tube before inserting the shock. Another source said if you can compress the shock with your hands, they're blown. I have the 5way adjustables and haven't tried this on each setting yet. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  4. A little while ago there was a post about heim joints and Arizona Z car control arms. What are the benefits of these arms? Fully adjustable caster/camber, etc? Do the rear ones have holes for a rear sway bar? I guess a simple plate like on the older Zs can be welded on. I assume these control arms are lighter too, but how much lighter? 5. Good point on not keeping running totals! I try not to think about how much I've spent (only a little compared to the others). I think more about how worth it it's gonna be to prowl on the neighborhood Porsches and Z3s. I'm 27 and married, but no kids, cuz I KNOW that'll stop the Z project dead in it's tracks. Maybe 10 years or so from now... Owen soon to buy a hydraulic press for the rear suspension and driveline parts ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  6. What tranny fluid is best for the T56? A sticker says use only Dexron 3 but what about Redline or Royal Purple, etc.? PS Why does it say use only Dexron 3 "ATF"? I assume this means automatic transmission fluid? Why have this sticker on a manual tranny? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  7. Does anyone have a part number for these? When I was ordering parts from Summit a couple of months ago, I was told that they didn't have anything for the Z. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  8. How hard is it to put one of these on? Do you have to re-route brake lines to use the prop valve? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  9. Mine is in the same location. I ran the 1/0 gauge batt cable behind the R fender, where the stock wiring for the interior lite, rear defroster, etc. ran. Then thru the door rails to the front. I used a Moroso box kit, two 3/8 inch bolts thru the floor secure the box. Cables used were Taylor. I welded a bolt to the chassis as a ground post. 10. I fit some 16 x 10 Hayashi Racing wheels on my 73 and it seemed like they were still too skinny...? This is with stock suspension. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  11. Drax, Where you located at? If it's close, my friend will be interested! I don't think any of us here "hate" the L6, we all know how good it is. Just be sure to make it a monster! Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  12. Where do you get an engine setup that cheap? I know someone who needs one also. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  13. I didn't have to grind any fins off the tranny. But I did have to hammer the tunnel of my 73Z. Now that my driveshaft is done, I'm finding out that the tranny is not pointing straight back to the diff, so I will need to grind the fins off near the reverse lamp connector and possibly hammer a little more. The Rev. Lockout Solenoid rubs against the wall right now. Mikelly, I think this could be removed altogether as well since it's not absolutely needed. Owen
  14. Thanks Pete, Haven't been here in a while so I missed this one totally. Got the headlites to turn on. I had to run a B+ wire to the headlites themselves, connected them to the GND terminals and then connected everything to the thick red wire thats hot when the jeadlite switch is on. Park lites were connected to those too cuz I couldn't find the hot wire for them. Should be OK. Now I just need to figure out the wiring for the wipers. 15. I would say, trust me, but I don't wanna end up a liar if you can't shift into reverse without power to the RL solenoid. But as for me, thanks to advice from Mike, I can shift into reverse no prob. If you have your tranny, just force the stick to the right. It'll feel hardest the first time, but after that it will be natural. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  16. Very unique idea there, sounds like a lot of trouble too! How about the 7MGTE from older Supras, theyre stronger than the newer Supra blocks. Don't know how heavy they are though. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  17. I guess I was right. no power, no solenoid engagement! So if you modified your speedo sensor, how is your programmable speedo hooked up to it? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  18. Well, it's not a sleeper looking car! Strange how the muffler looks a lot smaller hanging on the wall of a shop. When I did a test fit, it looked like someone hunga trash can on the back! I only wear a size 8.5 shoe, but I can fit my shoe almost all the way in! Preview page at: www.homestead.com/s30z/files/exhaust.htm Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  19. This is not V8 related, but I am confused as hell with what my manuals say vs what the prev. owner did to the wiring. I am almost done installing an 18 circuit Painless Wiring harness. My problem is in the combo switch area. How can I make this easy to understand... For the headlites, there is a 3wire connector, with RED/BLK, RED/WHT and BLK for hi beam, low beam, and horn, respectively. These are connected to the proper headlite wires up front. The lites turn on when a hot wire is touched to directly to the headlite wire, but don't turn on when I try to use the actual headlite switch. Somewhere, between this switch and the headlite wires, there should be a "feed" for power for the lites. But I can't find it. Same for the park lites. I guess what I should'te asked in the first place is, which wire is the positive wire for the headlite switch? Anyone who can help with my 73Z, thanks a lot Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  20. I'm in SoCali and I just checked, the back of my registration renewal notice. "Smog inspections are no longer required for 1973 and older motor vehilces." so no smog check and no referee station. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  21. I'm going two into one, and I DO have a 5 inch tip! It's a looks thang. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  22. Ooohh, noooo. He's got his 6 speed guys! Seriously, Dan, I gotta come see your ride, and Michael's too, he's in Pasadena. Any of you gonna bring your cars to the MSA show? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  23. About coilovers, Ground Control makes a set already made for a V8Z, at least thats what they told me when I ordered them. I forgot what the spring rates are though. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  24. I am not sure exactly if the skip shift needs to be modified or not. My first thought was that if there was no power going to it, it couldn't engage. My second thought was, what if it's already in the engaged position? So I decided to modify it per M. Kelly's instructions instead of leaving the possiblity of having to do it later. Another thing that needs clarification is, which part is the skip shift solenoid? Mike and I got our info from different sources, and we modified different parts...maybe one of you guys planning to do the swap can clarify this for future generations. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  25. Actually you can shift into reverse without having the reverse lockout wired up. I have some chevy mag articles if you're interested, but I think you know all you need to know already. One article has a diagram for using the stock master cylinder by use of an angled piece of sheet metal. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
