Fuel Infection II (continued on Mike K.'s)
Owen replied to Modern Motorsports Ltd's topic in Ignition and Electrical
I think the SDS is like Haltech, DFI, TEC-II, etc. It's just the computer and engine harness. Distributorless ignition would be nice but make sure the computer can handle it. My E6K had some limitations when using distributorless ignition. Like FastFrog, I have a TPIS MiniRam2 and there is plenty room for a distributor, the manifold, and a strut tower bar under a stock hood. I guess my brackets are different from Rich's because mine are not flat but offset like the JCR types. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

I heard a lot of good stuff about the Garetts. I think HKS uses them too. I'd recommend a hybrid for good response and top end power. Like someone mentioned, a big intercooler is absolutely necessary. I prefer front mount over the water cooled units. I think Spearco has some kind of sizing tips for different applications, you dont want to go too big, because of pressure drop. Friends who have used Spearcos say their fin designs arent as efficient as the Apex type but are a couple of hundred cheaper...your choice. I would also go with an adjustable external wastegate but you could alwasy put washers under the spring of the internal wastegate types too. You could also get the turbine wheel of a stock turbo trimmed to the specs of an expensive aftermarket turbo. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

I pulled mine from an 83 Max because the 81s i checked had welded on brackets. I then used the 79 rotors and calipers, i think... or were they 83s??? If you dont have the time and patience, buy them. They were hell to take off, even with a slide hammer. Owen

I heard IHI turbos are good if you get the ball bearing ones. Or the HKS T-54? or Trust T-88 or t-78 hybrid. These are all big bucks though. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

I read somewhere that the fork from the Viper was a better unit strengthwise. FYI is you havent gotten one yet. The reverse position will be tough unless you wanna go through the hassle of hooking up the electronics for the lockout solenoid. It's not worth it i think. sorry, been gone... try a japanese video rental store in the area. email is v8z@earthlink.net but having problems with dsl setup rightnow. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

I got rid of the dual 3 inchers and am going with a single 3 incher routed along the passenger side. That T56 really takes up a lot of room on the driver side! Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

Seperating Rear Lower control Arms and stub axle

I bought a hyd press from Harbor Freight Tools to do the bushings and those pins... Anyone wanna buy it?? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html -
Pretty long post here. Dont know if this was answered or not cuz I just skipped to the bottom but I used a tank from a 76Z(280z). All you need are longer straps and a longer fuel neck. I got my tank GasTankRenu'd. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

For the Skyline engine such as RB26DETT, the problem would be with the turbos, etc interfering with the steering rack, etc on the driver side of the engine bay. My friend at Nissan says that is one of their biggest problems, and they dont have the money to redesign it. So most likely all imported Skylines will be right hand drive. Though I could be wrong, try skylinegtr.com. Why not just build your straight-6? Hey Rick, You're using the MiniRam right? Do you have that long water neck that comes with it? I'm looking into braided radiator hoses but was told that they don't bend well. What kind of hoses are you using? Part number, etc? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

Have you seen that red 240z with the turbo engine in last years z calendar? he has the new school rims and it isnt my thing, no offense to anyone, run what you want. But anyway, the watanabes supposedly can be bought from classiczcar.com or some place like that, all they do is import it. In japan they are about 4 to 5 hundred dollars each, new. So if this shop is gonna make money off you, expect to pay almost 3 grand for a set. Owen

Don't know if this qualifies as ram air but I have sucessfully routed 3 inch tubing thru those holes and have a K&N on the end in front of the radiator but not blocking it. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

Thanks guys, I knew about the ABC sizes but only changed the bearings, I kept the same spacers with the same axles. Oh well, guess I gotta pull them off again! Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

Fuel infection....What options are best??
Owen replied to Mikelly's topic in Ignition and Electrical
I've got the same as Rick. 383 cid with TPIS MiniRam2. Except I'm using the Haltech E6K. I shouldn't say using cuz it's not running but thats what I got. Also MSD 6AL, 2 step, and RC Engineering injectors. I chose the TPI route because I figured there would be more options over TBI in terms of staging injectors, 2 injectors per cylinder, individual cylinder tuning, etc. My parts supplier suggested the E6K saying it was better than SDS and had newer software than AccelDFI. I can't say yea or nay yet. Note: the E6K is not fully semi-sequential EFI. More on this at: http://www.homestead.com/s30z/files/efi.htm my page of complaints... I've seen various posts, etc on tightening the stub axle to over 200 ft-lbs and such and I can go to 150 with my wrench. Problem is, at 110 or so the axle assembly gets to tight that I can't even rotate it, is it supposed be this tight? Or do I have a spacing issue or something? Where did my post go that I made yesterday?? Anyways, the first picture, those are Watanabe rims http://www.rs-watanabe.co.jp/, i think, you'll need the language plug-in for your browser. These are the most common for Zs in Japan and you can get them over here for a grip. Im planning to go to Japan this year and get some, if I can raise the money... Personally, I prefer the look of the older wheels, more awe inspiring...Ive seen some 510s on the net with those new SSR GPthetas and stuff and I just dont like it. I have a few pix of other Zs on my webpage, the very first one, i dont like the wheels, not enough lip on the rim. The car at the bottom has Watanabes. http://www.homestead.com/s30z/files/wangan.htm Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

This may be old news but I saw in the Aug 2000 issue of Chevy High Perf. an article on swapping in a T56 but keeping your old flywheel, etc. A company called Weir? has a kit which involves a new belhousing as well as a using a hydraulic throwout bearing. The bellhousing has a hole/slot for the hyd. lines and the setup becomes a pushtype. just FYI. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

Thanks Rick, I knew right away that the contact spring wasnt reaching the copper plate. I will try bending it tonite. One thing though, my horn button has two wires for it...one is for ground, what is the other one? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
-
I went with a Painless Wiring 18 circuit harness, it was sooo easy it made me nervous that I was doing something wrong! It doesnt have the EFI engine harness portion though, this will either come with your engine or with your aftermarket EFI kit. Owen PS Andy, what kind of EFI engine and setup are you using? ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

Hmmm, maybe you can help me then, Fat Frog. My car came with one of these wheels, dont know what it is but I guess it is a signature series because it has the Z in the middle and is black...oh yeah its round too. Anyway, there are wires on the back of the horn button and the ground wire is grounded to something on the steering column. But it doesnt go far enough in to touch the stock horn wire that is soldered onto the assembly behind the wheel. Is there something that has to be installed to reach this wire? Also, the horn button has terminals for two wires but a wire going through the column would get tangled up when I turn! I hope this makes sense... I've got the 5 way Tokikos, came with the car and the owner didnt even know about em! Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

For those using the T56 in an earlier Z, how big are your exhaust pipes and how much ground clearance do you have? Mine are 3inch pipes and I do not have much room. Especially on the drivers side where the pipe goes under the slave cylinder. Maybe it's my routing of the pipes? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html

I wonder if that guy at Arizona Z car would be interested in selling his molds for the hoods, fenders, etc.? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
