  1. Thanks guys, Here is my tranny. If it is the one in the red cirle, then we were talking about the same thing the whole time. I couldn't get this piece out though. Is the speedo the same thing as the VSS? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html [This message has been edited by Owen (edited March 11, 2000).]
  2. I swear I can't find the skip shift. I will post some pix of my tranny soon and hopefully someone can tell me where it is. Either way, the engine and tranny are going in tomorrow. Coulda done it tonite but friends came over and stopped my progress. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  3. If you want a 6speed, why not get the LT1 and T56? Pretty sure these came in Impalas. Maybe Caprices too? I have some links to engine and tranny suppliers on my homepage entrance. http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  4. I found this link on the skip shift also. http://www.mycamaro.8m.com/skipshift.htm Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  5. I ahve the JCR ones mentioned. The bushings suck though, they are plastic. I used the nuts and bolts from the JCR set and used the bushings from the urethane set (for the front). Depending on what year your car is, you may or may not have rear mounts for the sway bar. Mine is a 73 and JCR includes a kit which involves drilling thru the floor for a mount, like a battery box. However, my Z does have the rear mounts so I went to a junkyard and found the clips that hold the busing in place and used those instead. I think theres a link to JCR on my links page http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html V8 zcars links Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  6. Thanks Mike, How big is the bolt for the skip shift solenoid? There is a huge one on the left side, about a 1 1/2" and sticks out pretty far. Chevy magazine said the reverse lockout solenoid electrically prevents shifting into reverse unless the vehicle is at a certain speed. They suggest using a switch connected to the solenoid to enable shifting into reverse. They also say you can force your way into it but I couldnt, where is reverse located? Thanks Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  7. Mike, I read your aritcle on how to install the T56. I have some questions though. 1. How do you remove the skip shift solenoid? Thats the one with the big copper colored nut in the middle of the tranny right? Or do you just pull out the plastic plug? 2. What did you do about the reverse lockout solenoid? Chevy magazine says to use a switch. 3. What oil is best for the tranny? Thanks, Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  8. Thanks guys, So should I get ceramic coated or just use header wrap? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  9. I recently acquired a set of Ground Control coil overs. I need to cut out the perch and weld in a stopper for the threaded tube to sit on. My question is, is the strut assembly fixed to the brake assembly, etc. permanently? I want to swap to rear discs later when I find more money and I don't want to have to cut out the stopper ring again when I do. Or can I find a newer Z with rear discs and swap the entire suspension in, having welded the ring for the coilovers? Thanks, Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  10. I assume that using these X or H pipes would not be effective on a one muffler system? If the pulses were split and arrived at the muffler at different times would it be quieter? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  11. I'm going with the ceramic coated street rod headers from Hooker, havent ordered them yet. Anyone can say bad or good about these? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  12. I made a post late last nite before going to sleep, after 12AM pacific time, i hope that didnt kill all the messages... Any way, I did a mock up with my Dynomax block huggers and there was no room at all for spark plug boots because the pipes were bent in so far. This was only on the two outer ports. I returned them at once. My heads are the Edelbrock 6073 aluminums, straight plugs. So what is everyone else using? Anything else besides block huggers that will work also? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  13. Tube it! A former? member of the import racing scene, we would use metal tubing from the TB to the filter element mounted in the grill or surrounded by a heat shield or box like the ramairbox thingy. Some cheap people used the tubing from clothes dryers. Be careful when routing that filter to the lower portion on the grills, you DON"T want to be sucking up any water! My friend did this in his civic and it was cool, because it wasnt my car, there was a hole in the block about the size of a golf ball! Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  14. Thanks Mike and Greg, I am a little less confused now...strange howo my summit and jegs catalogs dont mention the vdo progammable speedo. anyway i had my parts guy order me a cheapo 5" autometer dash #3900 for around 90bucks and the autometer programmable speedo for around 150 bucks. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  15. Can braided fuel lines be used instead of hard lines running the length of the car? If I remember, the stock hard lines were snaked between the diff and the body and would be a pain to replace. As long as the braided lines can handle the fuel pressure, is there no problem in using them? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  16. Thanks again Mike, do you have a part number for the programmable speedo? I checked the VDO website but it was so confusing I couldnt find the number, it's not in my summit catalog either. Thanks, Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  17. Thanks Mike and everyone else. I understand about the voltages and the duty cycles, but the lack of money I have is the biggest deciding facotr, I will try and go for a well known brand name though. Mike, what are the TC mounts you mentioned? I won't even touch the floors until I get new ones, I also need a new rear hatch lock plate. $100 bucks from Nissan! I wonder if I can make my own... Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  18. My post on what tach and speedo to use with the T56 disappeared so here it is again. The less I work on my car and the more I sit around and read about modifications, the more confused I get! Do I need mechanical or electrical speedo and tach for my setup which is, T56 (1995 firebird) ignition E6K MSD 6AL there is a link on zhome about using the stock tach with msd stuff, but I don't know how reliable and accurate the stock tachs are. any ideas? thanks. owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  19. I am seriously looking into getting a MIG welder in the near future, a flux/gas combo one with settings for spot and seam welding too. My question is, where are the most important places to do this? Spot where and seam where? I want to do the subframe connectors too but after I get new floors. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  20. I went with the Dynomax brand I saw in Jegs, about the same price as the Summit ones I think. Been waiting over 2 months for them... Someones V8 swap article mentioned cutting the material in between exhaust ports to reduce flexing and warpage, anyone ever try this? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  21. Damn! thats one thing Ive always thought about but will most likely never be able to do it. You might want to look into callaway and lingenfelter performance for a crazy engine like that! last time i checked, they both sell engines for those kinds of applications, i hope youre rich! keep us updated. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  22. Ya know, the body colored emblems here, they probably won't even get noticed! But if youre talking dual exhausts and flares, and whale tail spoilers, well, thats another story. I choose the close-to-stock-look because I want to enjoy the feeling of disbelief the opponent gets when he eats my dust! He'll be saying "what the hell just beat me?!" Just like Mikelly's story! Oh what a feeling! Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  23. I would not use them, my car, with the exception of 240ZG overfenders will be stock looking. I will have the 1piece spoiler and airdam though, not really a sleeper but someone from say, zcar.com, might not notice any difference until I hit the gas. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  24. Mike Kelly, You said,"If you have a cage custom made for the car, and don't use door bars, you will have a very unobtrusive piece of safety equipment. I am a big advocate of their use, especially in the Z, ..." When you say big advocate of their use, you mean the cages and not the door bars right? Although I assume you recommend doorbars also. Darth, how much was your Competition Engineering cage? Any part numbers? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
  25. Mine are the Edelbrock aluminum heads, something Jr. Should be the same as Dan's setup. Since the car is far from running, I can't say a thing. Owen
