Your going to want to use the best belt money can buy for starters, make sure that your belt has the proper tension. About 3/4" deflection on the longest run using one finger and moderat pressure. Make sure the pulles are all exactly aligned. And IMO swap out that alt pulley for one of the big 5 inch racing deep groove pulleys. If your turning your engine 5K or above that alternator is doing like about 9K or better. I run the extra small moroso drive pulley, about 3 inches in diameter on the crank. I have never had heating problems but I don't have A/C either.

i would go 5 spd manual. automatics suck in a z.

I dont' agree with this statement either. For one thing sticks can't handle that much TQ, about 600 lb-ft max using the TKO trans, otherwise its about 300 to 400lb ft. Auto's can handle that and alot more. On a cost basis the manual trans is going to cost alot by the time you get a flywheel, clutch, scattershield, etc. and the overdrive auto is costly as well so it is a toss up IMO if your anywhere near 400 to 500lb-ft of TQ. If he were to get a 3.15 or even in the 3.30 range it will drop his rpm by about 500 to 250 rpm at cruising speed respectively. So 2500 rpm at cruising is alot better than 3000. Gear vendors overdrive units are big $$$ too.
As for being doggy in the first two gears, then it seems obious that the engine is underpowered and/or the stall speed in the converter is too low, especially in a light z.

I think installing a v8 is pretty easy myself especially if you go carb. You planning on going manual or automatic trans? 300 to 350hp is a breeze with an almost stock sbc or lsx. Plus the torque is higher than with the 6.
I vote v8!

Boy that sucks! I hate to hear your troubles but I also hope that it goes away and you get your project done.
It would probably be better to part it out, but if it's not costing you anything, why not wait.

If your going to use NOS then you need to stay 11:1 compression or less. You should select the cylinder heads first so you can talke with vendors and get the right pistons to make that work. Best you can get for 23 degree heads is the AFR's, call them and ask them for a recommendation as to which one would suit your intended application.

Typically a shop will vacuum test the ports to see if the valves leak. If it leaks, then there is a problem. If the seats were cut right and the valve (new or not) is concentric and has the seat ground properly and concentric you should be fine. If it leaks I am not sure you have the means to check for concentricity of the valve or the seat but the home method would be to lap the valve IMO.

Running methanol as a fuel or water injection does a pretty good job. The part that alarmed me was the fact that the coating can become too hot and cause pre-ignition.

That is quick. Nice!

What the hell; I wanna build a garage! What's your budget been so far, if you don't mind me asking? I'm going to be moving soon and the new house may not have a garage, which just ain't gonna fly!
I have $4250 in the garage and lift total with concrete, rebar and remesh. I have propanel for the sides. It is used and green in color but I got it for $250.

No, not yet anyway. If it was it'd be a no brainer. I think I just need to put the car together, then figure out what to do about fuel. Seems pretty sane just to plumb it in -10 and call it a day whether it's gas or alky or E85.
-
Well, starting to get all the pieces. Bidding on a tial 60mm wastegate and planning on putting a 5psi spring in that. I was thinking about injectors and what size to get. Pretty tempting just to get 160lb/hr and design the fuel system to run methanol. Then I could run either gas or methanol once I got my maps all figured out. Methanol would be easier, timing map would be straight across the board locked timing at 32 degrees.
I guess it is time to wheel the white z around, yank the engine, trans and cut the stock rear end pieces out of it and start the backhalf part.
And start on the engine. Need to gap the rings and start assembly. Since it is just a 3.5 inch stroke there are few issues to deal with. I did get another TPI setup complete off of an 86 vette, so now I have 2 TPI setups. I am going to port the base manifold and get it going together. Lots to do.

No, the 'Datsun' name was mainly applied to exports ( and a few select domestics ), and Nissan Motor Co's history is now several times longer than that of its ancestor D.A.T. Jidosha Seizo.
I have a 1970 Fairlady Z-L, two 1971 Fairlady 240ZGs and a 1971 Skyline GT-R, and none of them came from the factory with the word 'Datsun' anywhere on them. They are all Nissans.
In fact, all of the 'Datsuns' that we discuss on this forum are actually Nissans. Most of them just had 'Datsun' emblems attached to them due to some rather obscure and out of date reasoning that was rooted in the war years.......
This is what I love about you Alan. Always have an abundance of information including the obscure facts and chime in at the right time!!!

Well, they wanted a car fast. The automaker said "When", they said tomorrow and he said Dat Sooon?!! hence the name "Dat suuun". When it was delivered on time they had to change the name to "Nissan" which literally translates to "Miracle". In that they actually produced a car Dat sun.

yeah, true. CYFD just left. They recommend counseling for him. His mom refused says she didn't do anything. I can't make him go, he doesn't want to go. But they did say that it took 14 years for him to get where he is and it may take 14 more to get to a point where he even has a relationship with his mother.
-
CYFD was a no show. Oh, well, time to unload my big JD 790 excavator off the lowboy, wash it, fix a flat and prune my big cottonwood trees with my excavator.
Total Slacker!!

CYFD is coming this morning. Should be interesting.

Been tiling the house, but never did his room. Got him a new queen sized bed and going to rip up the carpet and tile his room. Ordered new blinds for his windows last night. Getting it all fixed up.
Going go-kart racing in alb this weekend!!! Starting on the monte and going to pull the z around and get that party started.
I have a BBC 468 fresh with forged pistons, Brodix BB2 heads, roller rockers, dual plane intake, 10:1 compression forged pistons, 2 bolt block, arp rod bolts, etc. Traded it for the paint and body work on the new z. So the new z will be professionally painted when I get it ready!!!! WORK IT BABY!!!!! Trying to decide on Color. I want Blue but white is nice also.
-
Good point John. First we are starting off with a little get together. Women, his and mine respectively, a couple of friends, some burgers, cokes, beer, home made french fries, salad, and ice cream!!!
Work it baby!!!!

My blessing are many, which includes all of you guys here!!!!
Let's get the party started in here!!!!!!!!

Well, it's partially settled out of court. The criminal charges are still pending against his mother and on hold till this gets done. He stays with me, she doesn't pay child support in the interim, we go to a psych expert (waste of time), she gets 3 weekends of visitation a month starting with supervised visitation and gradually working into regular visitation but only if he wants to see her which he does not at this time. If he has sports, then she doesn't get him at all. She brings all his belongings tonight or the deal is off.
When the psych expert determines if the abuse is real or not then we go to court later and then she has to face the music then but my son doesn't have to testify against his mother, only the psych moron.
Best I could do and the best in my mind to end the trauma for now for my boy.

Diesel temps, on the other hand, are usually around 900 degrees and can exceed 1000 degrees under heavy load.
No, 900 is the limit if it is measured on the cold side. If that is the hot side then it can be that or alittle more.
From wikipedia;
The average temperature of a piston crown in a gasoline engine during normal operation is typically about 300C (600 degrees Fahrenheit)
When auto enthusiasts want to increase the power of the engine they may add some type of forced induction. By compressing more air and fuel into each intake cycle, the power of the engine can be dramatically increased. This also increases the heat and pressure in the cylinder.
The normal temperature of gasoline engine exhaust is approximately 650C (1200F). This is also approximately the melting point of most aluminium alloys and it is only the constant influx of ambient air that prevents the piston from deforming and failing. Forced induction increases the operating temperatures while “under boost” and if the excess heat is added faster than engine can shed it, the elevated cylinder temperatures will cause the air and fuel mix to auto-ignite on the compression stroke before the spark event. This is one type of engine knocking that causes a sudden shockwave and pressure spike, which can result in an immediate and catastrophic failure of the piston and connecting rod.
The “4032” performance piston alloy has a silicon content of approximately 11%. This means that it expands less than a piston with no silicon, but since the silicon is fully alloyed on a molecular level (eutectic), the alloy is less brittle and more flexible than a stock hypereutectic “smog” piston. These pistons can survive mild detonation with less damage than stock pistons.
The “2618” performance piston alloy has less than 2% silicon and could be described as hypo (under) eutectic. This alloy is capable of experiencing the most detonation and abuse while suffering the least amount of damage. Pistons made of this alloy are also typically made thicker and heavier because of their most common applications in commercial diesel engines. Both because of the higher than normal temperatures that these pistons experience in their usual application and the low-silicon content causing the extra heat-expansion, these pistons have their cylinders bored to a very loose cold-fit. This leads to a condition known as “piston slap” which is when the piston rocks in the cylinder and it causes an audible tapping noise that continues until the engine has warmed to operational temperatures. These engines should not be revved when cold, or excessive scuffing can occur.

Not necessarily. Personally I prefer women with a more athletic build, which is funny because my wife is far from that, but she's also the first woman I ever dated that had more than a handful. Most guys, believe it or not, are less concerned with breast size than women seem to think. My ex-wife barely fit a B cup.
And now we know why she is your EX!

An infrared spectrophotometer is typically needed to analyze the fart gas for content. It is inversely proportional to the compression differences between cylinders.

How many miles did you have on that oil before you changed it?
