  1. AWESOME :-) Love your style :-) I have seen lots of pictures where the CAI is routed around the side of the radiator. One of the key things about my engine bay will be "cleanliness", I do not want extraneous pipes, wires, cables etc etc hanging around and looking ugly. I have seen an L Series engined car with a bay so clean it makes you dribble, all pipes and wires hidden, all lines routed through the inner wings etc etc. That is the look I would like with the LS2. The CAI will take some thinking about to get right.............
  2. You are so right - I am sorry for your loss. When I go, I hope my Grandkids feel like that about me, he obviously deserved your love and respect and earned it over many years by being "Grandpa"
  3. VinhZXT - great idea with the CAI, thanks.... was trying to work that one out in my head. Had thought about a longer pipe going around the side of the radiator, over the top looks a much better idea. M1noel - my chassis has been built to have a tank across the centre of the car behind the seats, I will not be able to use the standard tank. I can get the original pump / sender unit but what exactly are the issues ? Is there any reason that it cannot just have twin pumps as planned ? If you have to have the ECU reprogrammed anyway does it make a difference which way to go ? Boy from Oz - those look really slick but can you still shut the bonnet of a Z with one oth those ?
  4. That makes a great deal of sense and is something I had overlooked - thanks. Will find Jeromio's site and read up on it. The engineer building the car suggested two pumps but if the wiring is already there for one and it works...........
  5. I searched for months here for a Monaro engine (LS2) but no joy. They are very few and far between because there are very very few Monaros about. They are not selling well here. Why would u need the original sender unit ?? I can get one if needs be but as I am not an engineer, any guidance will help greatly. I would have thought that any suitable sender would be fine. The original would surely only work properly in the original tank ?
  6. A lot has been said about what will PHYSICALLY fit, however, conventional wisdom over here in nthe UK tends not to go for anything over 17" I am no engineer, but modern cars with big wheels tend to have double wishbones and much more sophisticated suspension that retains the integrity of the steering geometry throughout it's movement. The 37 year old Z suspension even with adjustable tubular wishbones simply is not up to coping with the accuracy needed for big wheels. I am going for 10 x 17 rear and 9 x 17 front. This will necessitate "rolling" about an inch of flare onto the arch lips.
  7. Spent a while at Boole & Babbage, Sterling and Compuware before joining IBM. Now at CA.... Account Director, selling big ticket software contracts. Kinda dull but pays the bills and buys lots of toys
  8. I love this place !!!! Thanks for your help, feel like a dipstick for not using google now So far it seems that I need : 12551577 Camaro/Firebird dipstick tube 12551581 Camaro/firebird dipstick 12558762 Camaro/Firebird oil pan 12558253 Camaro/Firebird windage tray 12558251 Camaro/Firebird oil pump pickup US Driver side Camaro engine mount JCI installation kit specifying 240 for the gearbox mount GTO Clutch Master Cylinder electronic speedo electronic tacho B&M Ripper Shifter Headers are a problem, I will have to have them custom made. The steering column goes right through the manifold (header) when installed into a RHD car. The radiator is being made, custom aluminium as fitted to the east African Safari Zs but with in and outs to match the LS2. Exhausts will again need to be custom mandrel bent. Anything I should know about or be wary of ???? There are plenty of companies here that can do top quality exhaust fabrication. Fuel tank ........ I am planning an aluminium cell behind the seats going side to side but staying fairly low.... any issues with putting twin pumps in to feed the engine ? I heard fuel tank issues mentioned but no explanation of what to look out for. Have custom F1 type companion flanges and soon to have F1 type CV driveshafts. Planning to use Modern Motorsports 5 stud billet rear hubs with uprated 280 stub shafts and 5 stud zero offset front billet hubs. Any views or experiences please ? Brakes will be wilwood, direct bolt on replacements. Suspension is being done for me by Ohlins - remote reservoir multi valved adjustable.
  9. I am having a cell behind the seats, effectively mid mounted. The fuel tank has gone from the rear ...... What fuel tank issues are you referring to ? It may help me avoid a painful mistake. Many Thanks Andy F
  10. Absolutely fantastic guidance, thanks guys, I appreciate it. When done I will compile a list of everything that was needed with part numbers and post a "how to transplant a GTO engine" thread. A couple of points came up that I had not considered : The Shifter : When you say it does not work what do you mean ? The box is the later model T56 with the plastic section below the gear stick. Are you saying it will not fit through the hole in the floor and I will need an adapter of somekind ? The Clutch Master Cylinder : I will ensure I get it, thanks for the pointer, but I would have thought any decent new master cylinder would work ? Evidently I misjudged that one. BOY FROM OZ : You owe it to me after we let you win the ODI series!.... more by luck than judgement I have to say
  11. Your 10.8 has amazed me, I only expected mid to high 11s but I will be running the same setup in a 240 with really trick suspension so ..... fingers crossed.... might be a 10 second car
  12. Cool, thanks Ulises, To help out (in England we called the oil pan the sump for example), exactly what do you mean by "the tray" ? I can research the threads I looked at before, one thread detailed which motor mount. Is it just a stock Camaro mount ? Can I simply order a new one from a dealer or does it need modification ? Have you fitted fly by wire then ? To me it makes sense because the wiring is there, the map is already there etc etc but for some reason I have been advised over and over to ditch it. How did you fit it ? Were there any problems or issues ? I have just checked out some of your threads Ulises.... are you serious ???? a 10.8 with an LS2 ?? I hope so, I did not expect it to be that quick, I was hoping mid 11's Many Thanks Andy F
  13. Thanks John, They seem to be great guys, I have spoken to three of them so far. The fly by wire will probably go... everyone is advising me to put a straightforward cable type throttle on instead. I know I need the Camaro type oil pan but I do not know if that means changing other things... I have read in threads I have searched about oil pick up pipes etc. These engines are like Elvis here in the UK, we all know about them but very few have ever actually seen them so I have no expertise to call on. What would be immensely helpful is if someone could give me a simple "do this" list.... ie change the sump (oil pan), swap X for Y, etc etc. The chassis has been done, strengthened and caged, the suspension has been specced up, brakes sorted, radiator, interior sorted .... not all bought yet but decided upon and worked out. The last piece is sorting the engine fitment.
  14. Hi Guys, I have just bought a 2,700 mile LS2 / T56 drivetrain from SchramAuto - it came from a 2006 Pontiac GTO to fit into a 1971 240Z. Having searched the existing threads I have picked up that I need to change the oil pan for a camaro one but cannot get a picture of EVERYTHING I need to change to make the implementation smooth. I intend to use the JCI kit but have picked up from searching that one mount is missing ???? Can anyone give me a definitive list please of what I need to do to this drivetrain to make it fit ? That way I can get all of the parts, do all of the mods BEFORE I try to test fit it Many Thanks Andy F
  15. Sorry for banging so much text in - here is the latest update I have seen : Doctors are hopeful that Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond will make a good recovery after suffering a "significant brain injury'' in a high-speed jet car crash. The 36-year-old star remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital after the 370mph jet-powered car he was driving crashed on Wednesday. Friends and family are keeping a bedside vigil at Leeds General Infirmary. Hammond was airlifted to hospital after the record-breaking Vampire dragster veered off the runway, flipped over several times and crashed on to grass at Elvington airfield near York. Doctors said Hammond's injury gave them "cause for concern'' but added that they were "reasonably optimistic'' he would make a good recovery. Meanwhile, Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson paid tribute to father-of-two Hammond as he visited him in Leeds with co-presenter James May. - Jeremy ClarksonClarkson revealed that he had made Hammond smile during the visit by calling him "a crap driver''. He told The Sun: "He was lying peacefully with a black eye but didn't react so I tried something else. "I said, 'The reason you're here is because you're a crap driver'. He then smiled at me. It was an amazing moment, very moving.'' Police and safety experts are investigating the crash, which happened after Hammond had been driving at speeds close to 300mph as part of filming. May was originally due to drive the Vampire for the programme, but switched places with his colleague ahead of the event. May said: "Despite everything he's been through he still seems like the Richard I know and love.'' Organisers - who have denied reports that Hammond was trying to break the British land speed record - said the "highest'' safety standards had been followed in preparation for filming. Primetime Land Speed Engineering, which is jointly run by the current British land speed record holder Colin Fallows, said they were "deeply shocked'' by the accident. Spokesman Malcolm Pittwood said he did not know how fast Hammond was going when he crashed but he was less than half way down the 1.8-mile runway when the accident happened. Keith King, a principal inspector with the Health & Safety Executive, said the HSE would be looking at the preparation and planning for the event.
  16. You will not be surprised to find that as he is such a well liked presenter, we get updates on National news here in the UK all the time. Jeremy Clarkson has come out and commented that everywhere he drives people are pipping their horns, winding their windows down and shouting best wishes for the Hamster. He literally has a nation holding it's breath and hoping for the best. The police are now investigating as are the HSE (Health and Safety Executive - a government safety body) because as always the powers that be have to find somebody to blame. They are shouting about going too far in pursuit of ratings .... There were fire teams and medics there - an ambulance got to him in 2 minutes, he was lifted by air ambulance straight to the specialist neurosurgical unit at Leeds General Infirmary which is possibly one of the best centres of it's kind in the UK. He was a very brave guy attempting a very hard to beat land speed record which is inherently dangerous. Would be cool if the powers that be could focus on helping him get better not looking for someone to blame. Good luck Richard
  17. AT least I have confidence the LS7 will fit now and can be mated to a T56, thanks for the pictures and your help. I know they are expensive but they seem pretty good value for money - it's a LOT of engine
  18. Awesome You have to read it right to the end Payback starts on page 3, the solids go back and forth through the ventilator and she apologises........or rather he does having stolen her screen name LMAO
  19. Thanks for the replies and help guys - I will expand a little further (not just round the waist !) : The engineer's brief is a well sorted, blisteringly fast, great handling, great stopping car that will rival the so called "supercars" apart from top speed because of aerodynamic restrictions. The engine choice is being made on "bang per buck". The project is going slowly but surely because of the need to keep finding cash. Scoggin sell the LS2 for $5,500 and the LS7 (real one) for $13,000. Big difference, pretty expensive but ...... In order to put a dry sump on the LS2 (engineer's advice) and upgrade it to 500 BHP you are pushing seriously close to the LS7 price. $3000 for a decent dry sump system, then all the tuning work. For the same ball park figure you can have another litre and loads more torque on a bog standard engine with LOTS more tuning potential. The engineer builds race cars with transaxles but has run a MOTEC M800 ECU with the LS7, changed the standard pressed steel headers for tuned length tubular ones and put cams in and has seen 640BHP for relatively little change or money. That kinda lights my fire so I have my heart (subject to the ability to pay for it) set on the LS7. Now the good part..... I have this morning found someone in the UK who has fitted an LS7 to standard LSx mounts with no problem AND has fitted a T56 using an LS1 bell housing. The box was a Viper box and there were some issues with the input shaft length but other than that, subject to the box being rated for the torque it appeares they will fit exactly as per LS1 / 2 / 6 The only caveat here (can someone help please ?) is he says that the front part of the LS7 sticks out slightly further that an LS2 because of pump differences and to check if it will foul anything. Anyone got any ideas ? How much clearance is there in front of an LS2 ?? won't be much bigger I guess.
  20. I have just come off the phone to the tech help at Scoggin Dickey who say the mounting points are the same but beware of the bell housing issue. They have not come across anyone putting a T56 on the back of an LS7 yet Their advice was tried and trusted LS2 with a few tweaks but they accepted the LS7 will have more low down grunt
  21. I have searched and searched and have found the question "will an LS7 fit ?" but have not found a definitive answer, only "should do". Has anyone actually fitted an LS7 into their 240 / 260 yet ? If so I would really appreciate a discussion on the whys and wherefores.... Many Thanks Andy
  22. All the ones I have seen in the UK are fitted with Honda Vtec engines ?????? The go fast version is a supercharged Honda ???? Maybe GM is a better and more plentiful choice in the US.
  23. These things are built here in the UK - they are very very quick.............but.................I saw an L28 powered 240Z with throttle bodies and a good tune beat one at the drag strip. The supercharged version cannot get enough traction off the line because it is so light, once it is rolling though it goes like a bitch and handles really well too
